TL;DR
- Area Gates are unlocked by raising your Trainer Rank through completing Important Requests — not by battling.
- Complete ‘Yawn up a Storm!’ in Withered Wasteland to reach Trainer Rank Great and unlock Bleak Beach and Rocky Ridges.
- Complete ‘Brighten things up!’ (Bleak Beach) and ‘Time to party!’ (Rocky Ridges) to reach Trainer Rank Ultra and unlock both Sparkling Skylands gates.
- The secret Withered Wasteland cliffside gate can only be opened after reaching Sparkling Skylands — likely after completing ‘Rebuild the huge building!’ or finishing the main campaign.
- The final gate has physical debris blocking it — break the rubbish blocks in front of it before interacting.
- All Area Gates in Pokopia eventually connect the four main areas into one continuous map.
Area Gates will block your path early on in Pokémon Pokopia, keeping Ditto contained in the Withered Wasteland until you’ve proven yourself as a Trainer. Raising your Trainer Rank is the key to unlocking every Area Gate in the game, and each rank is tied to completing specific Important Requests rather than anything you’d find in the Pokédex or on the battlefield.
Here is everything you need to know about how to open Area Gates and raise your Trainer Rank in Pokémon Pokopia.
Trainer Rank Overview
Your Trainer Rank in Pokémon Pokopia progresses through three tiers beyond the starting rank, each unlocked by completing Important Requests in the game’s main areas. The three unlockable ranks are Great, Ultra, and Master. Each rank opens a new set of Area Gates, pushing the boundaries of the map further and giving you access to new biomes, Pokémon, and resources. Check out the Habitat Dex to see what new environments open up as you progress.

How to Reach Trainer Rank Great – Unlock Bleak Beach and Rocky Ridges
To open the first two Area Gates in Withered Wasteland, you need to reach Trainer Rank Great by completing the ‘Yawn up a Storm!’ Important Request. This is one of the first major story milestones in Pokopia and serves as your introduction to the Important Request system.
Once complete, two Area Gates in Withered Wasteland will open: the eastern gate, which leads to Bleak Beach, and the north-western gate, which leads to Rocky Ridges. You’re free to tackle both new areas in whichever order you prefer.
While exploring these new zones, make sure you know how to swim — Bleak Beach especially has water obstacles you’ll need to navigate. It’s also worth checking how to increase your Environment Level in each new area as soon as you arrive to speed up your overall progression.

How to Reach Trainer Rank Ultra – Unlock Sparkling Skylands
The next set of Area Gates requires reaching Trainer Rank Ultra, which is unlocked by completing two Important Requests across two different areas. You need to complete both — the order doesn’t matter.
- ‘Brighten things up!’ — found in Bleak Beach
- ‘Time to party!’ — found in Rocky Ridges
The gates these unlock are located on the northern side of Bleak Beach and in the northern part of Rocky Ridges. The Bleak Beach gate is the trickier of the two to reach — you’ll either need to swim to it or build a bridge to cross. The Rocky Ridges gate is more accessible and can simply be walked to.
Both of these gates lead to Sparkling Skylands, so don’t worry about missing a location — either gate gets you there. Once you arrive, check out the Team Initiation Challenge walkthrough to hit the ground running in the new area.

How to Open the Secret Withered Wasteland Cliffside Gate – Trainer Rank Master
You may have noticed a third Area Gate in Withered Wasteland — set high up on a cliffside in the northern part of the region. This one is intentionally skipped during your initial progression and cannot be opened until you’ve reached Sparkling Skylands.
To reach the gate itself, you’ll first need to either fix the ladder leading up the cliff or use blocks to build your way up to it. Make sure you’re comfortable how to jump and check your stock of lumber and bricks if you plan to build your way up.
To unlock it, we recommend completing the full main campaign to reach Trainer Rank Master, though you may be able to trigger it earlier by completing the ‘Rebuild the huge building!’ Important Request in Sparkling Skylands.
When you’re ready, the corresponding Area Gate is found on the eastern island in Sparkling Skylands — the same island where you first met Tinkamaster. Climb to the highest level of the island, past the series of ruined buildings, and you’ll find the gate.
There’s a catch: the Area Gate will refuse to open because rubbish blocks are obstructing it. Break the blocks in front of the gate, then interact with it twice. With that done, you’ll have connected Withered Wasteland directly to Sparkling Skylands — a huge shortcut for late-game exploration and material farming.

Tips for Raising Trainer Rank Quickly
Focus on Important Requests the moment they appear — these are the sole driver of Trainer Rank progression and unlocking Area Gates. Don’t get too sidetracked collecting Notes or Papers before finishing the active Important Request in each area, as the map stays locked until you do.
Increasing your Environment Level in each area also supports the conditions needed for Important Requests to spawn, so keep that progressing alongside your main quests. Having a stocked inventory helps too — keep iron ingots, lumber, and wheat on hand for any building or crafting tasks tied to Important Requests.
Frequently Asked Questions – Area Gates and Trainer Rank in Pokémon Pokopia
How do you raise Trainer Rank in Pokémon Pokopia?
Trainer Rank is raised exclusively by completing Important Requests. There are three unlockable ranks — Great, Ultra, and Master — each gated behind specific requests in Pokopia’s main areas. You cannot raise your rank through battling or general exploration alone.
How many Area Gates are there in Pokémon Pokopia?
There are five Area Gates in Pokémon Pokopia: two in Withered Wasteland (plus the hidden cliffside one), one in Bleak Beach, and one in Rocky Ridges. The Bleak Beach and Rocky Ridges gates both lead to Sparkling Skylands, and the secret Withered Wasteland gate connects directly to Sparkling Skylands once cleared.
Why won’t my Area Gate open in Pokémon Pokopia?
There are two reasons an Area Gate might not open. Either you haven’t reached the required Trainer Rank yet — in which case you need to complete the relevant Important Requests — or, in the case of the secret Withered Wasteland cliffside gate, there are rubbish blocks physically obstructing it that need to be broken before you can interact with it.
Do both the Bleak Beach and Rocky Ridges gates need to be unlocked separately?
Both gates unlock simultaneously when you complete both ‘Brighten things up!’ and ‘Time to party!’ — you don’t unlock them one at a time. However, since both lead to Sparkling Skylands, you only need to pass through one of them to access the new area.
Can I access Sparkling Skylands without completing both Ultra Rank requests?
No. Both ‘Brighten things up!’ in Bleak Beach and ‘Time to party!’ in Rocky Ridges must be completed to reach Trainer Rank Ultra and open the Sparkling Skylands gates. Neither request alone is sufficient — you need both to trigger the rank-up.
