How to Sleep and Pass Time in Gothic 1 Remake

Sleep in Gothic 1 Remake works differently to most RPGs. Here's how to find a free bed, pass time, and what sleeping actually restores.

  • TL;DR: Sleeping is the only way to pass time in Gothic 1 Remake. There is no other time-skip option.
  • You cannot sleep in beds marked with a red icon — those are owned by NPCs.
  • The easiest early free bed is in the Old Camp — talk to Guy near the arena to claim a hut with a red awning.
  • Sleeping restores Mana and, under the right conditions, HP — but a sleep budget mechanic limits how much healing you get.
  • Every 3 hours of in-game activity earns 1 hour of restorative sleep. One hour recovers roughly 12.5% of HP and Mana.
  • Warning: Spamming sleep early pushes your rest budget into negatives and blocks HP/Mana recovery for a long time.
  • Complete Snaf’s Recipe quest early — it unlocks free daily food, which is your main recovery fallback when sleep is not healing you.
  • You can sleep in the New Camp by completing the A Roof Over My Head quest via Gorn.
  • The Swamp Camp has a free-use hut at the top of the ladders and walkways.

Sleep in Gothic 1 Remake is the only way to pass time in the game. There is no sit-and-wait button, no campfire rest option, and no fast-travel system to skip hours. If you need to advance the clock — to move an NPC, wait for daylight, or recover resources — you need to find a bed and use it. This guide explains exactly how sleeping works, where to find a free bed at each camp, how the sleep recovery budget works, and what to do when sleep is not healing you.

How Sleeping Works in Gothic 1 Remake

To sleep, walk up to an available bed and press the interact button. A prompt appears letting you choose how many hours you want to rest. Pick your duration and the Nameless Hero sleeps for that amount of time.

Not every bed is available. Beds owned by NPCs show a red icon when you approach them. If you try to sleep in one of these, the owner will wake you up shortly after you nod off — and they will not be happy about it. Stick to beds without the red icon to sleep without being interrupted.

Sleeping is also the only way to pass time in the game. If an NPC is not where they should be, if you need to wait for morning to travel safely, or if you need to advance time for a quest to progress, a bed is your only option.

Does Sleeping Restore HP and Mana?

This is where Gothic 1 Remake works differently to most RPGs, and it catches a lot of players off guard.

Sleeping always passes time. But HP and Mana restoration from sleep is tied to a rest budget mechanic that limits how much healing you can get.

The system works like this:

  • For every 3 hours of in-game activity, you earn 1 hour of restorative sleep.
  • Each hour of restorative sleep recovers roughly 12.5% of your HP and Mana.
  • A full 8 hours of restorative sleep will restore you to full HP and Mana.
  • You can sleep for more hours than you have earned, but the extra hours only pass time — they do not heal you.

The in-game glossary (press G on PC by default) explains this mechanic in full. Read it early so you know not to rely on sleep as an instant fix after every fight.

Warning: Do Not Spam Sleep Early

This is one of the most common traps in Gothic 1 Remake right now, and it can quietly ruin your early game if you are not aware of it.

Many players instinctively sleep repeatedly in the opening hours — to skip nighttime, to try to get guards to move, or to force time forward. The problem is that sleeping more hours than you have earned pushes your rest budget into negative numbers.

If your budget goes to, say, minus 16 hours, you will need to accumulate enough activity hours to climb out of that deficit before sleep will heal you again. In practice this can mean playing through several in-game days before your bed becomes a recovery tool again. Some players have reported going 24 or more real hours of play without getting any healing from sleep because of this.

The fix is simple but slow: stop sleeping and just play. Fight enemies, do quests, explore, and talk to NPCs. Every 3 hours of active play earns back 1 hour of restorative sleep. You cannot speed this up. Just keep moving and the budget will clear eventually.

If your sleep screen is showing +0 for HP or Mana, this is almost certainly why. Do not try to sleep it off — that makes things worse. Stay awake, stay active, and let the budget recover naturally.

What to Do When Sleep Is Not Healing You

If your rest budget is depleted or in the negative, you need other ways to recover HP. Gothic 1 Remake gives you a few options:

  • Food — The most reliable early recovery option. Cooked food restores HP directly and does not depend on the sleep system.
  • Potions — Faster HP restoration. Save these for emergencies rather than routine recovery.
  • Paid healers — Some NPCs can restore your health for ore nuggets.

The most important thing you can do early is complete Snaf’s Recipe quest — see below. It unlocks a free daily food source that becomes your main HP recovery fallback whenever sleep is not working.

Use Cooking to Fill the Gap – Snaf’s Recipe and The Forgotten Recipe

Gothic 1 Remake introduced a full cooking system, and two early quests in the Old Camp make it immediately useful for HP recovery when sleep is failing you.

Snaf’s Recipe is the first one to do. Find Snaf — the cook standing near the cauldron by the castle gate in the Old Camp — and talk to him about his stew. He asks you to bring him 3 Meatbugs and 5 Hellcaps. Meatbugs are found near the south gate of the Old Camp. Hellcaps are mushrooms found in and around caves near the camp. Neither requires difficult combat. Once you hand over the ingredients, Snaf rewards you with 100 XP, the Meatbug Ragout recipe, and — most importantly — free food every day. Come back to Snaf once per in-game day to collect it. This daily food is one of the most useful passive benefits in the early game.

The Forgotten Recipe is a separate quest that starts from a note inside the chest in your free hut (the one Guy gives you near the arena). The note leads you to Brock’s Stew, which requires different ingredients: Scavenger Breast (Raw White Meat from Scavengers near the north gate), Solanaceae herbs (found in caves near the south gate), and a few others. Complete this alongside Snaf’s Recipe since both send you to the same general areas. The reward is another cooked food recipe you can use at any cauldron.

Both quests are worth doing on your first day in the Old Camp. They take no combat to start, the ingredients are close by, and the cooked food they unlock is your most reliable HP recovery whenever the sleep system is not cooperating.

Where to Sleep in the Old Camp – Your Free Hut

The best early sleeping spot in Gothic 1 Remake is the free hut in the Old Camp. Here is how to get it:

  • Enter the Old Camp and explore the area near the arena.
  • Find an NPC named Guy — he is usually near the market area or the arena itself.
  • Talk to Guy and ask him if there is a free hut available.
  • He will tell you one has just been cleared out and point you to it.
  • The hut is opposite the arena and has a distinctive red awning at the front — easy to spot once you know what to look for.

Once you claim this hut, the bed inside is free to use whenever you return to the Old Camp. The hut also contains a storage chest — useful for keeping ore nuggets and gear safe. Check the chest when you first arrive, as it contains the note that starts The Forgotten Recipe quest.

Alternative Sleep Spots in the Old Camp

The free hut from Guy is not your only option in the Old Camp. Two others become available:

  • Mordrag’s Hut — Once Mordrag leaves the Old Camp to escort you toward the New Camp, his hut is free to use. If he is knocked out or killed, the same applies.
  • NPC-owned beds during the day — Many residents follow daily schedules and spend long stretches away from their huts. You can often use an NPC’s bed while they are out without being caught. Consequences for being caught are usually mild — a warning rather than a beating.

Where to Sleep in the New Camp

The New Camp requires a short quest before you have a proper bed:

  • Find Gorn in the New Camp and ask him where you can sleep.
  • This starts the A Roof Over My Head quest.
  • The quest requires you to deal with an NPC named Shrike — beat him in a fight.
  • Once Shrike is handled, his hut is yours to use.

This bed becomes useful once you start spending more time away from the Old Camp. Having a recovery point across the Colony saves supplies on longer trips.

Where to Sleep in the Swamp Camp

The Swamp Camp has a free-use bed at the top of the camp’s structure:

  • Climb the ladders and walkways leading upward through the Swamp Camp.
  • Keep going until you reach the highest point.
  • There is a hut there that can be used as a rest spot.

There are also some usable cots near Fortuno’s area lower in the camp. They may show as red but rarely cause serious trouble if used.

When Should You Sleep?

Sleep is most useful in three situations:

  • After earning enough rest time — Check that you are getting HP/Mana recovery before sleeping for healing purposes. If the prompt shows +0, skip it and stay active.
  • Before dangerous travel — Sleep to top up HP and Mana before heading into risky areas, as long as your rest budget allows it.
  • At night — Night in Gothic 1 Remake is genuinely dark and more dangerous. Sleeping through to morning is usually smarter than stumbling through hostile areas with low visibility.

Sleep is also needed for certain quest triggers. Some NPCs are only available at specific times of day, and some quest states only advance after time passes. If you are waiting on something, sleep a few hours forward.

Quick Sleep Tips Summary

  • Claim the Old Camp free hut from Guy as soon as you arrive.
  • Do not spam sleep in the opening hours — it pushes your rest budget negative and blocks HP recovery.
  • If sleep shows +0, stop sleeping and play actively until the budget recovers.
  • Complete Snaf’s Recipe immediately — the free daily food is your HP safety net.
  • Also do The Forgotten Recipe (note in your hut chest) for Brock’s Stew and another cookable food source.
  • Use food and potions when sleep is not healing you — do not wait it out with an empty health bar.
  • Read the in-game glossary (G on PC) to fully understand the rest mechanic.
