- TL;DR: You do not start with a map. You have to buy one.
- The main map seller is Graham, a cartographer in the Old Camp near the north gate.
- A cheaper option is Dexter in the Old Camp market — he sells the Colony map for 24 ore nuggets.
- Graham sells the Colony map for around 34–44 ore and the Old Camp map for 35 ore.
- You can intimidate Graham into giving you a map for free, but it damages your relationship with him permanently — and the most natural moment to do this is during the Test of Faith quest.
- The map does not show NPCs, quest markers, or a compass — it is a basic paper reference only.
- Some later quest maps add location markers directly onto your existing Colony map.
- You can also add your own custom markers to the map to track points of interest.
Map in Gothic 1 Remake is not something you get automatically. Unlike most modern RPGs, the game drops you into the Valley of Mines with no mini-map, no compass, and no quest markers. If you want to know where you are going, you need to track down a map seller and pay for it yourself. This guide tells you exactly where to go, who to buy from, which map is worth your ore, and what each map actually shows you.
Why You Need a Map in Gothic 1 Remake
Gothic 1 Remake does not hold your hand. The world is large, the roads are not clearly marked, and dangerous enemies are scattered across areas you may stumble into without warning. The Valley of Mines does not scale to your level. If you wander into the wrong zone too early, you will die quickly.
Without a map, navigation is entirely based on NPC dialogue, landmarks, and memory. That works eventually, but in the early hours it leads to a lot of unnecessary backtracking and confusion.
A map gives you a general overview of the Colony — where the camps are, how the world connects, and roughly which direction to travel. It will not mark every NPC or update with quest locations, but it gives you enough to move between major areas without getting completely lost.
Where to Find Graham – The Main Map Seller
The main map vendor in Gothic 1 Remake is an NPC called Graham. He is a cartographer based in the Old Camp. You will likely hear about him before you even arrive there. Diego mentions him on the road to the Old Camp, and a pair of hunters from the New Camp also bring him up during the early walk through the colony.

Once you reach the Old Camp, finding Graham is straightforward:
- Enter through the main north gate of the Old Camp.
- Look immediately to the right of the entrance.
- Graham has a small hut in that area.
- During the day, he wanders nearby — sometimes by the cooking cauldron close to his hut.
- He has a short black beard, a receding hairline, and wears basic digger clothes.
Talk to him to open his inventory. He sells two maps:
- Map of the Colony – around 34 to 44 ore nuggets (price can vary slightly based on prior purchases)
- Map of the Old Camp – 35 ore nuggets
The Colony map is the more useful of the two. It covers the wider world and helps with travel between camps. The Old Camp map covers just the settlement itself, which is small enough that most players learn it quickly on foot.
How to Get the Colony Map Cheaper – Buy from Dexter
Here is the tip that saves you a meaningful amount of ore early in the game. A trader named Dexter also sells the Colony map, and his price is significantly lower than Graham’s.

Dexter is located on the south side of the Old Camp in the market area. To find him from the north gate:
- Walk toward the castle entrance.
- Take the path to the right, past the water and Gravo’s shack.
- Follow the outer path around the castle.
- You will reach a market area with cloth coverings overhead.
- Dexter is usually near the pelt racks on the right side of that market during the day.
Dexter sells the Colony map for 24 ore nuggets, compared to Graham’s 34 to 44. That difference matters a lot in the early game when ore is scarce and needed for weapons, armour, and training.
The Old Camp map is only available from Graham, so if you want that one specifically, you will have to go to him. But for most players, the Colony map from Dexter is the better first buy.

Can You Get the Map for Free?
Yes, but it comes with a cost that is not ore.
You can threaten Graham into handing over a map without paying. This option works, but it permanently sours your relationship with him. Graham is not a fighter, but he is a useful contact in later quests, so bullying him early is a trade-off worth thinking about.
The most natural moment the game presents this option is during Diego’s Test of Faith quest. Diego sends you to the Old Mine and tells you to get a map from Graham first. At this point, you can threaten Graham and he will hand over the map for free. If you already own the Colony map, the game updates it with the Old Mine location instead of giving you a separate item.
Outside of that quest, you can still attempt to intimidate Graham for the Colony map, but the smarter move in either case is to pay him — 24 ore from Dexter is not a painful spend — and keep the relationship intact.
What Does the Map Actually Show?
The maps in Gothic 1 Remake are basic paper references. They are not dynamic. They will not:
- Show NPC locations
- Update with quest objectives automatically
- Track enemies or resources
- Function as a mini-map or compass
What they do show is the general layout of the world or the settlement — where camps are positioned, how areas connect, and the broad geography of the Colony. That is enough to stop you from going in completely the wrong direction.
The Colony map is the useful one. The Old Camp map helps a little if the settlement feels confusing at first, but the camp is compact and most players figure it out after walking around for a short while.
How Quest Maps Add Markers to Your Colony Map
Not every map in Gothic 1 Remake is a standalone item. Some maps you pick up during quests work differently — they add a specific location marker directly onto your existing Colony map rather than sitting as a separate inventory item.
The clearest example is the Old Mine map from the Test of Faith quest. If you already own the Colony map when you get this, the Old Mine location is simply added to it. You do not end up with two separate maps cluttering your inventory.
This makes it worth buying the Colony map early, because later quest maps build on it rather than replacing it. The more you progress, the more your Colony map can fill in with relevant locations.
How to Use Custom Markers on the Map
Beyond what the game adds automatically, you can also place your own custom markers on the map. This is one of the most useful tools in Gothic 1 Remake because the game expects you to remember a lot.
Useful things to mark include:
- Trainers and skill teachers
- Merchants and vendors
- Cave entrances you want to return to later
- Sleeping spots in the early game
- Areas with strong enemies to avoid until you are stronger
- Quest locations that are easy to forget
Start placing markers from day one. It saves a lot of time later in the game when the Colony opens up and locations start to blur together.
Do You Need to Buy Every Map?
No. You do not need every map to play Gothic 1 Remake well.
The Colony map is the one worth buying early. It covers travel across the wider world and reduces the chance of wandering into dangerous areas by accident. The Old Camp map is optional — the settlement is small enough to learn by walking around.
Extra maps sold later are only worth buying if they mark specific locations tied to quests you are actively working through, or if you are going for full collection. For a normal playthrough, the Colony map from Dexter at 24 ore is all you really need to start with.
Maps vs. NPC Dialogue – Which Matters More?
Both matter, but NPC dialogue is more important in Gothic 1 Remake.
The map gives you a geographic overview. NPC dialogue gives you the actual directions, context, and details you need to complete quests. Gothic 1 Remake is not a game where you skip conversations and follow a marker. NPCs tell you where to go, how to get there, and what to watch out for.
Think of the map as a reference tool, not a navigation system. Use it alongside listening carefully to what NPCs say, and you will navigate the Colony without much trouble. Rely on the map alone and you will still get lost.

Final Tips for Using the Map in Gothic 1 Remake
- Head to the Old Camp early and buy the Colony map from Dexter for 24 ore.
- Skip Graham’s Colony map price — Dexter is cheaper for the same item.
- Pay Graham rather than threatening him where possible — you will want him on your side later.
- If you are on the Test of Faith quest, threatening Graham for the Old Mine map at that point is the most natural window to do it.
- Quest maps like the Old Mine map add markers to your Colony map rather than sitting as separate items — another reason to own the Colony map early.
- Place custom markers from the start — trainers, vendors, caves, and danger zones.
- Always listen to NPC dialogue carefully. It gives directions the map does not.
- The Old Camp map is a nice-to-have, not a must-buy.
