The Subnautica 2 Bioreactor is the most flexible power source in the game. It sits inside your base, runs on organic matter, and works at any depth – no currents, no sunlight, no thermal vents required. In Normal mode it generates 10 units of energy per second. Switch it to Overdrive and it doubles to 20. This guide covers where to scan all three blueprint fragments, what you need to craft it, what to fuel it with, and how to keep it running without wasting resources.
Play the game now via Subnautica 2 on Steam or on Xbox Game Preview. Visit the official Subnautica website for more.
TL;DR
- Scan three Bioreactor fragments to unlock the blueprint. All three are within 400 metres of the Lifepod.
- The Bioreactor costs 2x Titanium Ingot and 2x Copper Ingot to craft. Both need a Processor.
- It is an Interior Facility. Place it inside a room in your base using the Habitat Builder.
- Normal mode generates 10 energy per second. Overdrive generates 20 but burns fuel twice as fast.
- Use Biofuel Blocks for best efficiency – they last around one hour in Normal mode.
- Any organic matter works as fuel: fish, plants, Medical Gel Sacs, Necrolei Cysts, and more.
- The Bioreactor works at any depth. It is the only power source with no environmental restriction.
- Switch it off when external power sources are meeting your needs to save fuel.
What Is the Bioreactor in Subnautica 2?
The Bioreactor is an interior power generator that converts biological matter into electricity. You load it with organic fuel, set the power mode, and it starts producing energy for your base. Unlike every other power source in the game, it has no placement restrictions tied to the environment. Solar Panels stop working past 200 metres deep. Hydroelectric Turbines need a water current. Thermal Plants need heat vents. The Bioreactor just needs a room and something to burn.
That makes it the most reliable backup – and in many cases the main – power source for mid and late-game bases, especially when you are building deep or in areas where currents and light are not available.
For a full overview of how all power sources compare, see our guide on how to add power to your base in Subnautica 2. If you are still setting up your Hydroelectric Turbine network, see our guide on how to build a Hydroelectric Turbine in Subnautica 2.
How to Unlock the Bioreactor Blueprint
You need to scan three Bioreactor fragments to unlock the blueprint. All three are in the early-game Shallows region within 400 metres of the Lifepod, so you can get this blueprint fairly early in your playthrough.
Fragment 1 – Chap’s Blackbox Cave

The first fragment is inside a flooded underwater base at roughly 220 metres south of the Lifepod, at approximately 42 metres depth. This is the same location tied to the Chap Blackbox signal from the NOA Terminal. As you approach, you will see Giant Coral Crabs and rock pillars in the area. Swim into the base structure and scan the broken Bioreactor inside.
Fragment 2 – Metal Crate East of the Lifepod

The second fragment is inside a metal crate about 370 to 390 metres east of the Lifepod. You will pass a crashed ship on the way and spot more wreckage surrounded by Surge Jellies. The fragment is inside a crate in this debris field at around 74 metres depth. Scan it.
Fragment 3 – Old Habitat

The third fragment is inside the Old Habitat POI, located roughly 380 to 400 metres north-northeast of the Lifepod at around 45 metres depth. Enter the facility through the hatch at the back. In the next chamber, turn right just past a scuba tank and you will see the ruined Bioreactor fragment to your left. Scan it and the blueprint is yours.
Additional fragments are also scattered nearby if you miss any of these – including one near the northernmost cliff of the starting area (facing heading 015 from the Lifepod) and one inside the Cicada Wreck Lander Garage to the northeast. You only need three scans total.
You will need your Scanner to do this. If you have not built one yet, see our guide on how to craft the Scanner in Subnautica 2. For help unlocking blueprints in general, see our guide on how to unlock blueprints and crafting recipes.
Bioreactor Crafting Recipe
Once you have the blueprint, find the Bioreactor under the Interior Facilities tab in the Habitat Builder. Note it is not in the Power tab – it is specifically listed under Interior Facilities. Each Bioreactor costs:
- 2x Titanium Ingot
- 2x Copper Ingot
Both ingots are crafted at the Processor. A Titanium Ingot requires 3x Titanium and a Copper Ingot requires 3x Copper. Each ingot takes around 30 seconds to process, so expect to wait a couple of minutes to gather all four ingots before you can build.
For Titanium, see our guide on how to get Titanium in Subnautica 2. For Copper, see our guide on where to find Copper. If you have not built a Processor yet, read our guide on how to build a Processor and craft ingots.
How to Place the Bioreactor
The Bioreactor is an interior structure. It must be placed inside a room in your base. You cannot build it in open water or on the seabed. It takes up a significant amount of floor space, so plan for it when laying out your base rooms.
Once placed, interact with the main console to open the fuel interface. Load your chosen organic matter into the storage slots, select a power mode, and the Bioreactor will start generating electricity for your base immediately. No Power Transmitters needed – it connects directly to your base’s internal power grid.
If you have not started building your base yet, see our guides on how to unlock the Habitat Builder and what to build in your base first.
Bioreactor Power Modes
The Bioreactor has three operating modes. You switch between them at the console.
Off
The machine sits idle. No fuel is consumed. No energy is produced. Use this mode when your other power sources – like Hydroelectric Turbines or Solar Panels – are already meeting your base’s energy needs. Keeping it off when you do not need it saves fuel significantly over time.
Normal Mode
Generates 10 units of energy per second and burns fuel at the standard rate. This is the everyday setting for most players. Good for keeping your base powered during exploration without burning through supplies too fast.
Overdrive Mode
Generates 20 units of energy per second but burns fuel at twice the rate. Use Overdrive for short power spikes – for example, during the night when Solar Panels drop output and your base demand suddenly outpaces supply. Do not leave it on Overdrive permanently or your fuel reserves will drain much faster than expected.
Best Fuel for the Bioreactor
The Bioreactor accepts almost any organic matter as fuel. Here is what works and what is most efficient.
Biofuel Blocks (Best Option)
Biofuel Blocks are by far the most efficient fuel source. A single Biofuel Block provides around 36,000 total power and burns for approximately one full hour in Normal mode (around 30 minutes in Overdrive). They burn much more slowly than raw organic matter, meaning you can load a few blocks and leave the Bioreactor alone for long periods without worrying about it running out.
Biofuel Blocks are crafted at the Processor using one of these recipes:
- 5x Fibrous Pulp
- 3x Pent
- 2x Crab Feces
Fibrous Pulp is harvested from Cradle Shootroot and Whip Gorgon plants, both of which are found in the Shallows and surrounding biomes. Pent is also abundant once you explore more of the map. For Fibrous Pulp specifically, see our guide on how to get Fiber and Fibrous Pulp in Subnautica 2.
Other Valid Fuel Sources
If you are short on Biofuel Blocks, the Bioreactor accepts raw organic materials as emergency fuel. These burn faster than Biofuel Blocks but work fine as short-term options:
- Water Slugs – provide around 1,200 total power each. Good filler fuel.
- Necrolei Cyst – short burn duration. Not ideal for long-term fuelling. See our guide on how to get Necrolei Cyst.
- Lucifer Rotsac – a valid organic fuel option. See our guide on how to get Lucifer Rotsac.
- Acidic Raion Pouch – burns as fuel. See our guide on how to get Acidic Raion Pouch.
- Medical Gel Sacs – alien plant material that works as fuel. See <a href=”https://gamingpromax.com/subnautica-2-how-to-get-medical
