Why You Need Copper in Subnautica 2

Copper is the second most important resource in Subnautica 2, right after Titanium. You will need it almost as soon as you hit the ocean surface. The very first major crafting goal the game pushes you toward — making a Basic Battery — requires copper. That battery is then used to craft the Scanner, which is the tool that unlocks blueprints for everything else in the game.

Without copper, your progression stalls fast. This guide tells you exactly where to find it, how to collect it efficiently, and what you will be using it for in your early hours.

What Does Copper Look Like in Subnautica 2?

Copper appears as small orange-brown rocky outcroppings or nodes attached to cave walls and ceilings. It has a warm reddish-orange colour that stands out against the darker grey stone of underwater caves. Once you know what you are looking at, it is not hard to spot.

Copper comes in three sizes:

• Small nodes — pick these up directly with your hands. They give you 1 copper each.
• Medium nodes — smash these with any tool (even your Scanner works). They give 2 copper each.
• Large formations — these need a Sonic Resonator or Feedback Resonator to break. They can drop anywhere from 1 to 5 copper depending on the node.

In the early game, you will mostly be collecting small and medium nodes by hand or with a basic tool. That is more than enough to get you started.

Where to Find Copper in Subnautica 2

Location 1: The Cave Directly Under Your Lifepod

This is the first place you should look. There is a hole in the ocean floor directly beneath your Lifepod. Swim down into it and you will enter a small cave system. Look at the walls — you will find copper nodes here. This cave also contains Titanium and Acidic Raion Pouches, making it one of the most resource-efficient early spots in the game.

You do not need to go far at all. This cave is close enough that you can collect copper, surface for oxygen if needed, and repeat. It is the safest and most accessible copper source right at the start.

Location 2: The Coral Dome Cave — 30m East of the Lifepod

There is a Coral Dome (a large orange rock structure that sticks out of the water) about 30 meters east of your Lifepod. Swim into the dome and then dive into the cave system that runs beneath it. This cave contains copper ore nodes on the walls and ceiling.

This area is also useful for other resources. There is a Flashlight inside an open container about 11 meters down inside this dome, which is worth grabbing while you are here.

Location 3: 130m East of the Lifepod — The Best Early Farming Spot

This is the richest early copper location. Swim 130 meters east of your Lifepod. You will pass a cave that has a strong current of water blasting out of its top — keep going past that one. Just beyond it, you will find another cave entrance. Go inside.

This cave has multiple copper ore nodes on the ceiling and walls, and also contains larger copper formations that can be broken by hand and yield three or more copper at once. Once you know this location, copper farming becomes very easy. Just be careful — there are poison-spewing plants in and around this cave. Do not swim through their toxic clouds or you will take damage.

Location 4: North Toward Old Habitat and Camp Zero

If you head north from your Lifepod toward the Old Habitat and Camp Zero points of interest, you will also find copper deposits along the way. These locations are slightly further out but worth visiting once you have better oxygen capacity and a bit more confidence navigating the ocean.

Location 5: Cliff Walls and Cave Systems Across the Map

Copper is not restricted to specific named locations. It is a common cave resource that spawns throughout the game world. Anywhere you find a cave system or an underwater cliff face, look at the walls. Copper tends to cluster together, so if you spot one node, check nearby surfaces for more.

How to Collect Copper Efficiently

Here are a few practical tips to make copper farming faster and less stressful:

• Always check cave ceilings — copper often spawns on the roof of caves, not just the walls. Look up when you enter any cave.
• Bring your Scanner or any tool — medium nodes cannot be picked up by hand. Having even a basic tool lets you break them open for extra copper per node.
• Manage your oxygen carefully — caves can disorient you. Plan your route back before you go too deep. Look for blue bubble-emitting plants that refill your oxygen as you explore.
• Mark your locations — copper respawns over time in Subnautica 2. Once you find a good cave, revisit it regularly to keep your supply topped up.
• Do not ignore surface-level outcroppings — copper can also appear on stone archways and rocky formations in open water, not just inside caves.

What Is Copper Used For in Subnautica 2?

Copper is one of the most in-demand early crafting materials in the game. Here are the key recipes that require it:

• Basic Battery — crafted with 2x Copper and 2x Acidic Raion Pouches. This is your very first major crafting goal. The Basic Battery powers the Scanner and is needed to activate the Welcome Center outpost.
• Copper Wire — a core crafting component used in a wide range of more advanced tools, base equipment, and electronics throughout the game.
• Mild Acid — another early recipe that uses copper as an ingredient.
• Fabricator — the full base Fabricator (not the limited Lifepod version) also requires copper as part of its recipe.
• Small Ceiling Light — a base building component that uses copper.

Copper Wire in particular becomes a recurring component as you progress. Many mid-game and late-game recipes use it, so the demand for copper never really goes away. Stockpile it whenever you can.

Does Copper Respawn in Subnautica 2?

Yes. Like in the original Subnautica, resources including copper respawn in Subnautica 2 after enough time has passed. This means any cave or location where you farmed copper before will eventually refill its nodes. Once you find a reliable copper cave, mark it and come back regularly. It is a much better long-term strategy than constantly searching for new spots.

Tips Before You Go Mining

• Grab Water Slugs while you swim — copper runs are a great time to also stock up on water. Pick up every Water Slug you see on the ocean floor on the way to and from caves.
• Do not get lost — Subnautica 2 has no map. Use landmarks on the surface to orient yourself, and place beacons once you have them.
• Watch for poison plants in caves — especially in the 130m east cave. Their damage adds up fast if you are not paying attention.
