TL;DR
- Water is a survival stat in Subnautica 2 — if it hits zero, you lose health and can die.
- The main early-game water source is Water Slugs — small translucent blue creatures on the ocean floor.
- Pick them up and take them to the Fabricator inside your Lifepod.
- Open the Sustenance tab in the Fabricator and convert 1x Water Slug into 1x Water (+40 hydration).
- Later, you can use 3x Fibrous Pulp as an alternative water recipe once you have a Processor.
- Water Slugs glow at night, making them much easier to spot in the dark.
- Always grab Water Slugs during every dive — never leave them behind.
Why Water Matters in Subnautica 2
Subnautica 2 is a survival game. That means three things are trying to kill you at all times: enemies, oxygen limits, and your own basic needs. Health, Food, and Water are shown as circles in the bottom-left corner of your screen. You need to keep all three topped up.
Water depletes slowly but steadily. If it drops to zero, you start losing health. Ignore it long enough and you will die. The ocean is all around you, but you cannot drink seawater. You need to process it through the right sources. This guide explains exactly how to do that, starting from your very first dive.

How to Make Water in Subnautica 2: Step by Step

Step 1: Find Water Slugs on the Ocean Floor
Water Slugs are the easiest and most reliable early-game water source in Subnautica 2. They are small, translucent, blue, spiky creatures that crawl slowly along the ocean floor. You will find them everywhere near your Lifepod in the starting biome.
They are completely harmless and very slow. Just swim up to one and press your interact button to pick it up. Grab as many as you can during each dive. They are small, so they do not take up much inventory space.
Pro tip: Water Slugs glow bright blue at night. If you are having trouble spotting them during the day, they are much easier to see after dark. Just keep an eye on your oxygen while you search.
Step 2: Return to the Lifepod and Use the Fabricator
Once you have collected a few Water Slugs, swim back to your Lifepod. Inside the pod, you will find the Fabricator — the main crafting station available to you at the start of the game.
Walk up to it and open it.
Step 3: Open the Sustenance Tab
Inside the Fabricator, look for the Sustenance tab. This is where all food and water recipes are listed. It is a separate tab from the Resources and Equipment tabs, so make sure you are in the right place.
Scroll through the Sustenance menu and you will see the option to convert your Water Slug into a bottle of Water.

Step 4: Craft the Water
Select the Water recipe and confirm it. The Fabricator will convert 1x Water Slug into 1x Water. Each bottle of Water gives you +40 hydration. That is a solid chunk of your thirst meter restored in one go.
Repeat this for each Water Slug in your inventory. Stock up so you are not scrambling for water every few minutes while exploring.
Alternative Water Recipe: Fibrous Pulp Method
Once you have progressed a bit further and built a Processor, a second water recipe becomes available. You can craft Water using 3x Fibrous Pulp instead of a Water Slug.
Fibrous Pulp is harvested from underwater plants using your Survival Multitool. This method is useful once you have a steady supply of plant material and want a backup option beyond Water Slugs. It is not faster in the early game, but it gives you more flexibility as your base grows.
Where to Find Water Slugs Near the Lifepod
You do not need to go far to find Water Slugs. They are scattered all over the ocean floor in the starting area, right around your Lifepod. Here are a few tips to find them quickly:
- Swim along the seabed in any direction from the Lifepod. You will see them within the first 30–50 meters.
- Check under ledges and around coral structures — Water Slugs tend to cluster near these spots.
- If exploring at night, their blue glow makes them stand out instantly against the dark ocean floor.
- They do not swim away or fight back, so you can take your time picking them up.
Can You Find Water Without Crafting It?
Yes — but only early on and in limited amounts. You can find pre-made Water and Nutrient Blocks inside supply crates and storage stashes scattered around the starting area and your Lifepod. Check the storage locker inside your Lifepod right at the start. It usually contains a small amount of food and water to help you survive your first few minutes.
These supplies run out fast. Do not rely on them. Get into the habit of collecting Water Slugs on every single dive so you always have a steady supply ready to craft.
Does Game Mode Affect Water Needs?
Yes. If you are playing on Creative Mode, you do not need to worry about food or water at all. Your character is effectively immortal in that mode and the Sustenance mechanics are turned off entirely.
In Survival Mode — which is the default and the recommended way to play — water is a constant concern. The Sustenance tab in the Fabricator will be visible and active. Keep it stocked.
Tips to Stay Hydrated in Subnautica 2
- Always grab Water Slugs on every dive — even if you do not need water right now, stockpile them for later.
- Check your water meter before long dives — running low on water while you are deep underwater is a bad situation to be in.
- Keep a few crafted Water bottles in your inventory — drink one when your hydration drops below half.
- Do not confuse Water Slugs with other creatures — they are specifically the small translucent blue ones on the floor, not fish swimming in open water.
- Night dives make Water Slug hunting easier — their blue glow is a dead giveaway in low light.
What About Food? Is It the Same Process?
Food works differently and is more complicated than water. At the very start of the game, your character has what is called Digestive Incompatibility — meaning you cannot safely eat alien fish or fauna. Eating them raw will actually hurt you.
To eat the local wildlife, you need to unlock the Digestion Adaptation by interacting with the Angel Comb, a large pink plant found roughly 158 meters northeast of your Lifepod. Until then, stick to Nutrient Blocks found in supply crates, or cook fish using the Fabricator for limited nutrition.
