Mattel Brick Shop Xbox 25th Anniversary Set

Mattel has revealed its premium Brick Shop Xbox set — a 3,509-piece, 1:1 scale recreation of the original Xbox console and its famously chunky Duke controller, complete with Halo, Morrowind, and Psychonauts dioramas hidden inside. It’s a lot of brick for a lot of money, and it goes on pre-order now ahead of an October 2026 release. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

    What Is Mattel Brick Shop?

Before diving into the set itself: Mattel Brick Shop is Mattel’s premium brick-building brand, launched in May 2025 as a direct competitor to LEGO’s adult collector line. The first wave was built around Hot Wheels vehicles — detailed, large-scale builds aimed at adult collectors rather than children. The Xbox set is the brand’s first major licensed gaming collaboration, and at 3,509 pieces it sits comfortably in premium LEGO Icons territory in terms of scope and complexity.

The brand positions itself against LEGO on price-per-piece value, and the Xbox set’s $329.99 retail price works out to roughly 9 cents per piece — which actually undercuts comparable LEGO sets of similar scale. Whether that’s a meaningful distinction when you’re still writing a $330 cheque for a toy is a matter of perspective.

For reference, the original Xbox launched at $299 in November 2001. So yes, this brick recreation of the console costs more than the console itself did at launch — adjusted for nothing, just raw dollars. The irony is not lost on anyone.

The Console Build — 1:1 Scale

The finished Xbox model is built to exact 1:1 scale, meaning it’s the same physical size as the original 2001 hardware. The large green Xbox logo on top is recreated, the front controller ports are present, and the black-and-green colourway is faithfully reproduced in brick form. It’s designed to sit on a shelf and pass for the real thing from a reasonable distance — which is either impressive or slightly unhinged depending on your shelf space situation.

The set includes a display stand to prop the finished console up at an angle, making it presentable as a display piece rather than just a flat box.

    The Duke Controller Build

The Duke — Microsoft’s original and notoriously oversized Xbox controller, which was eventually replaced by the smaller Controller S after players complained it was roughly the size of a dinner plate — is fully buildable and also 1:1 scale. The controller connects to the console model via a buildable cable. The buttons on the finished Duke aren’t just decorative: pressing them triggers different light and sound effects depending on which of the three game modes the user has selected. The A, B, X, Y buttons, triggers, and d-pad are all functional in this way.

The Three Dioramas — Hidden Inside the Console

This is the part that makes the set genuinely interesting rather than just expensive. The top of the brick-built Xbox opens up to reveal three miniature NanoWorld dioramas that slot inside the console, each recreating a scene from one of the original Xbox’s landmark games. You can swap them in and out depending on which game you want on display.

    Halo: Combat Evolved

The Halo diorama recreates a scene from the campaign — specifically Master Chief fighting the Flood, the parasitic alien enemy introduced in the Library level. The Flood were one of the most memorable and genuinely unsettling elements of Halo’s original story, and their inclusion rather than a simpler Covenant battle scene is a nice choice that rewards people who actually played through the whole campaign. The NanoWorld figure of Master Chief in his Mark V armour is included.

    The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Morrowind diorama features Dagoth Ur — the main antagonist of Morrowind, god-king of the Sixth House, and a character who has experienced something of a cultural renaissance in recent years as one of gaming’s most unexpectedly philosophically interesting villains. His inclusion as a NanoWorld figure is genuinely surprising and pleasing for anyone who spent time in Vvardenfell in 2002. Dagoth Ur’s presence alongside Halo’s Master Chief and Psychonauts’ Raz is a very specific kind of early 2000s Xbox nostalgia that will hit hard for a certain age group.

    Psychonauts

The Psychonauts diorama features protagonist Razputin “Raz” Aquato, the psychic kid at the centre of Double Fine’s cult classic platformer. Psychonauts is an interesting inclusion alongside two significantly higher-profile games — it was a commercial disappointment on original Xbox despite strong reviews, and only really found its audience later through digital distribution. Its inclusion alongside Halo and Morrowind is a genuine nod to the Xbox’s broader catalogue beyond its biggest hitters, and Double Fine fans will absolutely appreciate it.

    Lights and Sound

The set includes built-in LED lighting throughout the console and controller. The Duke’s working buttons trigger sounds and light effects keyed to whichever diorama is currently slotted into the console — so the Halo mode produces combat sounds, the Morrowind mode has its own audio, and Psychonauts has its own set of effects. It’s a clever integration of the interactive and display elements rather than just bolting a battery pack onto an otherwise static model.

    Is It Worth $330?

Depends entirely on who’s asking. For LEGO collectors who’ve bought sets like the LEGO NES ($230 for 2,646 pieces), the LEGO Atari 2600 ($240 for 2,532 pieces), or the LEGO Super Mario 64 ($170 for 2,064 pieces), the Xbox set’s 3,509 pieces at $330 is actually competitive on price-per-piece — especially given the lights, sounds, and interactive controller. The three swappable dioramas are a genuine differentiator that none of the comparable retro console LEGO sets have offered.

For someone who isn’t already in the premium brick collector space, $330 for something that will take several hours to build and then sit on a shelf is a harder sell. The October 2026 release also puts it right in the gift window for anyone looking for a gaming-adjacent holiday present — which is almost certainly deliberate timing on Mattel’s part given the Xbox 25th anniversary overlaps neatly with Q4.

The full 25th anniversary Xbox product lineup extends well beyond this set. Mattel is also releasing a Hot Wheels die-cast replica of the original Xbox and Duke controller (a small car shaped like the console — yes, really), a UNO deck with Xbox-themed cards featuring characters from Halo, Minecraft, and other Xbox franchises, and a dedicated Halo 25th Anniversary Hot Wheels 5-pack featuring vehicles from the Halo universe as miniature die-cast cars.

For more gaming hardware and collector news this week, Gamescom Opening Night Live is August 25 with Witcher 3’s third expansion making its world premiere — the Morrowind diorama in this Xbox set is a good reminder of just how long Bethesda’s catalogue has been part of the Xbox identity. The Xbox Free Play Days weekend wrapped August 23 with three free games, and if you want a less expensive piece of Xbox history for your shelf, old console hardware keeps turning up in unexpected places. Meanwhile Marvel Tokon’s ongoing PC DRM situation is a reminder that $330 brick sets sometimes have a better relationship with their customers than $70 digital releases.
