Gamescom 2026 is almost here, and Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live is shaping up to be one of the strongest shows of the year. The lineup is already stacked on paper — Witcher 3’s long-awaited third expansion, a new look at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, a Game of Thrones RTS — and there’s still a huge amount of the show yet to be announced. If the industry’s fall release window needed a proper launch pad, this is it. Here’s everything you need to know.
When Is Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026?
Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The pre-show begins 30 minutes early — at 10:30am PT — and is worth watching. Geoff Keighley tends to front-load the pre-show with real announcements rather than filler. The main event kicks off at:
- 11:00 AM PDT (Pacific)
- 2:00 PM EDT (Eastern)
- 7:00 PM BST (UK)
- 8:00 PM CEST (Central Europe)
- 3:00 AM JST (Japan — early Wednesday)
- 4:00 AM AEST (Australia — early Wednesday)
The show runs approximately two hours based on previous years. Stream it free on YouTube, Twitch, or Steam via The Game Awards channels. In-person tickets for Cologne are sold out, so online is your only option unless you’re already there.
Gamescom itself then runs from August 26–30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany, with the public able to attend from August 27.

Every Game Confirmed for Opening Night Live 2026
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past (World Premiere)
This is the headline of the show and the one most likely to dominate discussion afterward. Songs of the Past is the third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — the first new Geralt story since Blood and Wine shipped in May 2016, exactly a decade ago. It was announced on May 27, 2026, and CD Projekt confirmed the world premiere reveal is happening at ONL on August 25. The studio promised a detailed guided showcase.
Here’s what we know going in: Songs of the Past is co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio made up of veterans who worked on the original Witcher 3. It’s a current-gen exclusive — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC only, no last-gen versions. It launches in 2027. The expansion serves as a narrative bridge — described as a “prologue of sorts” to The Witcher 4 — though CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski was careful to clarify it tells a fully standalone story and the Witcher 4 connection is indirect. Dandelion is confirmed to appear.
The most discussed detail going into the reveal is the mystery third sword. In the Belleteyn Night festival artwork released months before the official announcement, Geralt appears carrying a third sword alongside his standard steel and silver blades — one with an ornate, curved crossguard unlike anything in the series. CD Projekt’s Amelia Korzycka confirmed: “It is a very important sword for the story.” That’s the kind of deliberate tease that tends to sit at the centre of a major plot beat. The reveal should tell us what it is, where Songs of the Past is set on the Witcher world map, and where it sits in the timeline relative to the main game’s endings.
The expansion was originally expected in 2026 before being pushed to 2027 — Nowakowski addressed the delay in an investor call in May, citing a joint decision to push for the best possible result. Given Blood and Wine is still considered one of the best expansion packs ever made in any genre, expectations are extremely high.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
The third and final part of Square Enix’s FF7 remake trilogy returns to ONL, with director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed to appear in person. June’s Summer Game Fest already gave us the Highwind reveal — showing off how players can skydive from the iconic airship to any point in the open world — plus glimpses at how Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind play in combat. The question for this appearance is what layer Square wants to peel back next. A story-focused trailer feels likely given how much gameplay infrastructure they’ve already revealed. A deeper dive into one of the new characters — or perhaps confirmation of the release date if the 2027 window has firmed up — would also fit the scale of an ONL appearance. FF7 Revelation is confirmed for PS5 and PC, with Switch 2 also listed.
Gears of War: E-Day
The Coalition’s Gears of War prequel returns with a brand new trailer. E-Day is set on Emergence Day — the single most catastrophic event in Gears lore — showing a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago facing the initial Locust invasion before the series’ signature cover-shooter aesthetic had time to form. Previous trailers have been cinematic and heavy on atmosphere. The new ONL trailer will, presumably, include some gameplay and a closer look at how the Coalition is handling the E-Day setting from a moment-to-moment combat perspective. Gears of War: E-Day is also confirmed to be playable on the Gamescom show floor at the Xbox booth, which is a signal the game is further along than its reveal appearances might suggest.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros
The gameplay reveal trailer for this real-time strategy game drops at ONL. You take control of one of Westeros’ major factions — from House Stark to the Night King’s White Walker army — and attempt to rewrite the history of the continent. Details are thin on the ground beyond that core pitch, which makes the gameplay reveal the entire story. Whether War for Westeros is going for a grand campaign structure, a more focused skirmish-based approach, or something in between will define how the community receives it. The Game of Thrones IP has had a rocky history with licensed games, so the show is everything here.
Ontos (Frictional Games)
Frictional Games — the studio behind SOMA and the Amnesia series — is showing more of Ontos, their new sci-fi horror game. The setting is Samsara, a luxury lunar hotel that is very clearly not all it appears to be. Stellan Skarsgård plays one of the occupants, which is a remarkable piece of casting for a horror game. Frictional has consistently delivered some of the smartest and most unsettling first-person horror experiences in the medium. More details on what exactly Ontos is asking you to do — survive, investigate, unravel a mystery? — should come from this showing.
Ananta (NetEase)
NetEase’s free-to-play open-world action game comes to ONL with what will hopefully be a release date attached. Ananta is set in a futuristic city and incorporates an ambitious blend of action gameplay, character collection, and open-world exploration. It’s been compared visually to a polished anime production, and the scope NetEase is pitching is genuinely ambitious for a free-to-play title. A release date — or at minimum a proper release window — seems likely given the current stage of promotion.
Showa American Story
A new trailer for this action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic United States through a distinctly Japanese pop-culture lens. You play as a stuntwoman navigating a world that blends American Americana with Japanese creature design in ways that shouldn’t work but do. It’s been one of the more visually distinctive games on the horizon, and ONL is a chance to show more of how the combat and exploration actually feel in motion.
Mewgenics
Edmund McMillen and James Id’s cat-based tactics game is getting a musical performance on stage at ONL, which is not something you hear about many games. The performance alone makes it worth watching live. Whether an announcement accompanies it — DLC, a console release beyond PC, a release date — is the question. The game launched in Early Access to strong reception earlier this year. A console announcement at ONL would be a clean moment for it.

Games That Could Show Up As Surprises
September and October Releases Looking for Attention
Several big September releases could use the ONL platform to stand out in a crowded window: Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall (Konami is confirmed present at Gamescom with a new Townfall trailer), Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Capcom has confirmed a Gamescom presence with the game playable), The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. New trailers for any of these are realistic possibilities.
October releases also have historical precedent for ONL appearances — Call of Duty has turned up at Gamescom consistently over the years, and with Modern Warfare 4 available to try in beta right now and launching October 23, a deeper look at campaign or Warzone’s Zodiac map would land perfectly here. Phantom Blade Zero just had a big State of Play showing and could double down at ONL.
2027 and Beyond
Fable is one of the most anticipated 2027 Xbox titles, and Playground Games’ reboot has been shown primarily through world-building and character glimpses. A combat showcase at ONL would be the natural next step given how much of the open world and its inhabitants we’ve already seen. Metro 2039 is also confirmed for ONL and targeting early 2027 — the darkest Metro chapter yet deserves a proper extended gameplay reveal. Alien: Isolation 2 is playable at Gamescom and could make an ONL appearance. Persona 4 Revival is also confirmed at the Sega booth, with a potential ONL appearance possible.
And then there are the pipe dreams: God of War: Laufey, Exodus, Persona 6, the Ocarina of Time remake that keeps circling in rumour. ONL tends to have at least one genuine left-field surprise that no one predicted. One of these would qualify.
One thing that won’t be at ONL: GTA 6. That’s two days later, on August 27, as a dedicated Netflix event.
How to Watch Opening Night Live 2026
Stream it free on YouTube or Twitch via The Game Awards official channels, or on Steam. The pre-show starts 30 minutes before the main event — set a reminder for 10:30 AM PT if you want to catch everything. The show itself runs approximately two hours.
This is a genuinely stacked week for gaming. The FromSoftware Duskbloods network test runs August 21–24 on Switch 2 right before ONL, the Xbox Free Play Days weekend wraps August 23 with three free games, and the Marvel Tokon PC DRM situation is still developing as Sony weighs its next move. 007 First Light also had a massive week, crossing 4 million sales — a reminder that the games industry going into autumn 2026 is as busy as it has ever been.
