TL;DR
- You need 4 working K9 Battery Cores (Rare / blue) to power the Lab Door in MW4 DMZ.
- These come from the Operation Shopping Hacks Story Mission at NuriGO Mall in Hajin.
- Kill a robot K9 dog and loot it before it explodes — looting after gives you a useless Destroyed K9 Battery Core (gray).
- The keypad code for mall security comes from the laptop at the encampment and changes every match.
- Once you have 4 working cores, insert them into the K9 Core Terminal beside the Lab Door.
- Completing this mission rewards you with Night Vision Goggles, a Coin Mining Den Key, and 25,000 DMZ Cash.
What Is the Lab Door in MW4 DMZ?
The Lab Door is a sealed entrance inside NuriGO Mall, located underground in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. You encounter it during Operation Shopping Hacks, one of the six Tier 1 Story Missions in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. It is the mission that closes out the Underground chapter of DMZ Orders.
The door is locked and cannot be opened by force. The only way through it is to collect four working robot cores and slot them into the K9 Core Terminal mounted beside the entrance. The catch — and the reason most squads get stuck here — is that the cores have to be taken from the robot dogs before they blow themselves up. Miss that window and the item you pick up is completely useless for this objective.
This guide covers the entire mission from start to finish, with full detail on how to get working cores fast and avoid wasting time on the wrong item.
Operation Shopping Hacks — Mission Overview
Before you can reach the Lab Door, you need to understand where this mission sits and what you are doing here. Operation Shopping Hacks sends you into NuriGO Mall in the northeast corner of Hajin City to dismantle Lieutenant Jang-ui’s weapons network. The mall has an active North Korean military presence above ground and a sealed robotics lab hidden underground.
Location: NuriGO Mall, Hajin City (northeast)
Threat Level: Medium
Recommended Gear: 2-Plate Armor Vest, Medkit, Night Vision Goggles (the underground sections are dark)
Rewards on completion: Night Vision Goggles, Coin Mining Den Key, 25,000 DMZ Cash
You can start this mission by selecting Story Missions → Operation Shopping Hacks from the Deploy menu at your FOB. For a broader look at how DMZ Story Missions and progression work, see our MW4 DMZ all Operator Traits guide, which also covers the progression system in detail.
Full Operation Shopping Hacks Walkthrough
Here is every step in order, from landing in Hajin to extracting off the rooftop.
Step 1 — Hack the Encampment Laptop
When you drop in, your first waypoint takes you to Lieutenant Jang-ui’s encampment inside NuriGO Mall. North Korean soldiers are guarding the area, so clear them out before you approach the laptop.
Find the laptop near the encampment window and interact with it to hack it. Wait for Overlord to analyze the data. When the hack finishes, a code for the mall security door appears in your objective tracker on the HUD.
Do not use a code from a guide, a video, or another player’s run. The keypad code changes every single match. The one you need is always displayed live in your objective tracker after the laptop hack completes.
Step 2 — Open Mall Security with the Code
Head into the underground parking garage and look for the entrance marked Entrance 36. The security door keypad is located here. Enter the code exactly as shown in your objective tracker.
Once inside the Security Annex, it will be dark. Find the portable generator near the door and interact with it. There is a timing minigame — hit the target zone on the meter to successfully start the generator and restore power to the annex.
While you are in the annex, also check the workbench laptop nearby. Decrypting the note on it is part of exploring the annex and moves the mission forward.
Step 3 — Collect 4 Working K9 Battery Cores
This is where the mission trips people up. The Lab Door requires four K9 Battery Cores — the Rare (blue) version. These drop from the robotic K9 dogs that patrol the mall concourse and atrium underground.
There is also one K9 Battery Core sitting in a container inside the Security Annex itself, so check there first — it saves you one robot dog kill right away.
The remaining cores come from the dog spawner station in the mall. It sends out robot K9 units continuously. Your job is to shoot one down and loot the core before the dog’s self-destruct sequence completes.
K9 Battery Core vs. Destroyed K9 Battery Core — Know the Difference
This is the most important thing in the entire mission. The game drops two lookalike items from these robot dogs, and only one of them opens the Lab Door.
| Item | Rarity | How You Get It | Powers the Lab Door? |
|---|---|---|---|
| K9 Battery Core | Rare (blue) | Loot a disabled robot dog before it explodes | Yes |
| Destroyed K9 Battery Core | Common (gray) | Loot the wreckage after the robot explodes | No |
The Destroyed K9 Battery Core is easy to grab by accident if you are not paying attention. It looks similar in your inventory but is a Common gray item rather than a Rare blue one. If the terminal refuses your cores, open your inventory and check the rarity color of what you are carrying. Gray ones are worthless for this objective.
How to Farm K9 Battery Cores Quickly
The robot dog spawner station keeps producing new K9 units during your deployment. That means you always have more chances to get working cores, but time pressure matters because each dog starts its self-destruct countdown the moment it is disabled.
Here is how to farm them efficiently:
- Target the head or the glowing spots on the robot’s back. These are the weak points and will disable the dog faster, giving you a larger window to loot before it explodes.
- Move to the core the instant the dog drops. Do not wait to check the area around you first. The self-destruct timer starts immediately on death.
- Work with your squad. Split the spawner station duties. One player focuses on shooting dogs down, others focus on looting the cores. This cuts your farming time significantly.
- Don’t forget the annex container. One core sits in a container inside the Security Annex — this is a free core that requires no combat at all.
- Clear the North Korean soldiers first. Getting shot while trying to loot a dying robot dog is how you miss the timing window. Clear the immediate area around the spawner before you start farming cores.
You need 4 intact cores total. With the annex container giving you one, you only need to successfully loot 3 robot dogs before they blow.
How to Power the Lab Door with Robot Cores
Once you have all 4 K9 Battery Cores in your backpack, follow the waypoint to the NuriGO Mall Robotics Lab Door. Look for the K9 Core Terminal mounted beside the door itself.
Interact with the terminal and insert each core. The terminal tracks your progress from 0/4 to 4/4. Once all four are slotted in, the terminal surges with power and your objective switches to Wait for the Lab Door to Open.
Step back from the door. It takes a moment to power up and slide open. When it does, your next objective becomes available inside the robotics lab.
What Happens After You Open the Lab Door
Inside the robotics lab, Operation Shopping Hacks continues with several more steps:
- Hack five lab computers located across the tents inside the lab. Interact with each one to begin the network breach.
- Keep the computers running during the breach. Some computers may stop during the process. If they fail, you need to restart them quickly to keep all five active.
- Wait for the lab servers to reboot. Once all five are hacked and running, wait for the reboot to complete.
- Loot the Lab Vault. The vault contains a Bio-agent Sample as the primary item. There are also bags of cash you can carry out as a bonus.
- Exfil from the mall rooftop. Follow the marked Fulton crate on the rooftop to extract and complete the mission.
Operation Shopping Hacks Rewards
Completing and extracting from Operation Shopping Hacks earns you the following:
- Night Vision Goggles — directly useful for future dark-area deployments including later Story Missions
- Coin Mining Den Key — opens a specific locked location in Hajin for a follow-up loot run
- 25,000 DMZ Cash — added to your wallet for FOB upgrades, Paid Infils, and crafting
The mission also completes the Underground chapter of DMZ Orders and earns DMZ XP toward your player level and Operator Dog Tag progression. One documented completion earned an A rating and 12,500 XP even without maximizing every optional objective.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Looting robot dogs too slowly
This is the number one issue. The self-destruct window is short. If you stop to shoot other enemies or reload before grabbing the core, the dog blows up and you get a gray Destroyed core instead. Shoot the dog down, go straight to it, loot it immediately.
Using a code from outside the game
The security door keypad code is randomized every match. You will see other players online posting codes from their runs — these will not work in your game. Always read the code from your own objective tracker after hacking the encampment laptop.
Not starting the generator in the Security Annex
Players sometimes enter the Security Annex and head straight for the lab door without turning on the generator. The annex is dark without it and the workbench laptop will not be accessible. Start the generator first, then explore.
Carrying gray cores to the terminal
If you have a mix of real and destroyed cores in your bag, it is easy to try to insert the wrong ones. Before you approach the terminal, open your inventory and confirm all four cores are Rare (blue). Toss any gray Destroyed K9 Battery Cores — they have no use here.
Not clearing enemies before farming cores
The underground area around the spawner station has North Korean soldiers active during the mission. Trying to loot fast while being shot is a reliable way to miss the looting window. Clear the immediate threat, then start pulling cores.
What to Do with Leftover K9 Battery Cores
Once the Lab Door is open, any extra K9 Battery Cores you are still carrying have very limited value. Each one sells for only 200 DMZ Cash — a small return. The better move is to drop them in the lab before you continue to the computer hacking step. They take up backpack space that is better used for loot from the vault itself.
Do not bother carrying them back to the FOB. They have no crafting use and no permanent purpose once the door objective is done.
Tips for Solo Players
Operation Shopping Hacks at NuriGO Mall is rated Medium threat, but solo players face some additional challenges compared to a full squad:
- Stealth matters more. Going loud early draws attention from both AI and other player squads also running in Hajin. Use suppressed weapons where you can.
- Clear methodically. Take your time clearing soldiers section by section rather than rushing into the underground area outnumbered.
- Equip Night Vision Goggles before you deploy. The underground sections are dark. Without NVGs, navigating the mall interior and reacting to threats is much harder.
- The Possum Trait is valuable here. A free second chance from Last Stand can save your run if you get caught during the computer-hacking defense phase.
For a full breakdown of which Traits help most in situations like this, see the MW4 DMZ all Operator Traits and how to unlock them guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Robot Cores do you need for the Lab Door in MW4 DMZ?
You need exactly 4 working K9 Battery Cores. The door will not open with fewer than 4. Any cores beyond 4 are spare and can be dropped or sold for 200 DMZ Cash each.
Where do you find Robot Cores in MW4 DMZ?
K9 Battery Cores drop from the robotic K9 dog units patrolling the underground sections of NuriGO Mall, specifically around the spawner station in the concourse and atrium. One working core is also available in a container inside the Security Annex, so you only need 3 more from robot dogs.
Why won’t my Robot Cores power the Lab Door in MW4 DMZ?
You almost certainly have Destroyed K9 Battery Cores (gray/Common) instead of intact K9 Battery Cores (blue/Rare). The destroyed version drops when you loot a robot dog after it has already exploded. Open your inventory and check the rarity color. Gray cores cannot open the Lab Door.
What is the keypad code for NuriGO Mall Security in MW4 DMZ?
The code changes every match and cannot be looked up in advance. Hack the laptop at the encampment during the mission and the code will appear in your objective tracker on the HUD. Use that code at the keypad entrance marked Entrance 36 in the underground parking area.
What are the rewards for completing Operation Shopping Hacks in MW4 DMZ?
You earn Night Vision Goggles, a Coin Mining Den Key, and 25,000 DMZ Cash. The mission also completes the Underground chapter of DMZ Orders and awards DMZ XP toward your player level and Operator Dog Tag progression.
