Onyx: The Dark Grip Revealed — Bloober Team’s Switch 2 Exclusive Horror Game Is Handheld-Only and It Looks Wild

    By Mark Smith · September 9, 2026 · 9 min read
    onyx the dark grip reveal

Alright, Bloober Team just did something nobody saw coming — and we mean that in the most literal sense. Their newly revealed Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, Onyx: The Dark Grip, is not just a horror game designed for handheld play. It’s a horror game that only works in handheld mode. No docking. No TV. Just you, your Switch 2, a foggy town, and whatever is lurking inside it. Yeah. We’re doing this.

The game was unveiled during the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, finally giving an official name and identity to what Bloober Team had been teasing as their mysterious Switch 2 exclusive project. Formerly known internally as “Project M,” the reveal confirms this is a very different kind of Bloober game — smaller in scope, deeply experimental in design, and built entirely around the Switch 2’s unique hardware capabilities.

So What Actually Is Onyx: The Dark Grip?

Here’s the setup. You play as a mysterious supernatural Entity — not Holden, the human protagonist at the center of the story. Holden is a lone traveler who ends up stranded in an abandoned fog-drenched town after being drawn there by a voice he can’t explain or ignore. He didn’t choose to be there. Someone — or something — called him. Your job, as the Entity, is to guide him through this nightmare, manipulate the environment around him, and help him piece together the truth about what happened to this strange, empty place.

The dual-layer design here is genuinely clever. You’re not controlling a hero in the traditional sense. You’re an unseen influence working from the outside, tapping, tilting, and pushing the world around Holden to keep him from going completely off the deep end. The town is full of terrifying creatures and perplexing situations that can drive Holden toward madness — and preventing that while also uncovering the mystery is the game’s core tension. It’s less “play as the protagonist” and more “play as the guardian angel, except the angel might also be the reason this is all happening in the first place.”

The Handheld-Only Design Is the Big Story Here

Let’s be very clear about what Bloober Team has done here: Onyx: The Dark Grip cannot be played docked. You can’t put it on your TV. You can’t enjoy it from your couch in the traditional gaming sense. This is a Switch 2 handheld experience, full stop. That’s not a limitation — that’s a design decision, and a bold one.

The reason is the controls. The game is built entirely around the Switch 2’s touchscreen and tilt mechanics. You’re tapping out-of-reach switches to open doors for Holden. You’re tilting the console to shift elements of the environment. You’re using direct screen contact to interact with the world in ways that simply don’t translate to a TV-and-controller setup. The touchscreen isn’t a gimmick bolted on for novelty — it’s the fundamental interface through which you exercise your power as the Entity.

Think about what that means for the horror atmosphere. You’re holding the device in your hands. The screen is right in your face. Something terrifying is happening inches from your eyes, and you’re physically reaching out with your fingers to intervene. That’s a genuinely different kind of intimacy with a horror experience than sitting back on a couch watching it play out on a big screen. Bloober Team is betting that physical closeness and tactile control will amplify the dread in a way that traditional play can’t replicate. It’s a compelling argument.

The Mind Reading Mechanic Sounds Fascinating

Beyond the basic exploration loop of guiding Holden through creepy environments, one of the standout abilities revealed in the trailer is the capacity to read the minds of other characters Holden encounters in the town. Not everyone has left. Some people are still there — or something that used to be people — and accessing their thoughts is how you start to understand what went wrong in this place.

That mechanic carries a lot of potential. Horror games live and die by the quality of their environmental storytelling and the way they dole out information, and building mind reading directly into the gameplay loop as a core ability rather than a cutscene means the lore discovery feels earned. You’re actively reaching in and pulling the truth out, rather than just finding a conveniently placed journal entry. Combined with the touchscreen mechanics, there’s something genuinely unsettling about the idea of literally pressing your fingers to the screen to get inside another character’s head.

Bloober Team Going Back to Smaller Roots — and That’s Actually Good

The reason this announcement lands so differently from Bloober Team’s recent output is context. For the past few years, they’ve been operating at the highest level of their career. The Silent Hill 2 Remake was a massive critical and commercial success, landing an 87 on Metacritic and earning praise from even longtime skeptics who weren’t sure Bloober was the right studio for the job. Cronos: The New Dawn, their original horror IP, arrived in September 2025 and sold half a million copies, cementing their reputation as a legitimate force in the genre.

Onyx is deliberately smaller than both of those. Bloober Team has openly described this as a return to their smaller-scope roots — a more intimate, focused horror experience rather than a cinematic blockbuster. And honestly, that’s exciting in its own way. Some of the most interesting horror games ever made have been small, weird, experimental things built around a single strong idea. Onyx has a strong idea. The Entity mechanic, the handheld-only control design, the fog-soaked mystery town — there’s something here that feels genuinely fresh for the genre.

It also makes sense strategically. Bloober Team is currently juggling an enormous amount of work. Alongside Onyx, they’re developing Star Trek: Shadow Frontier — a psychological horror game set in the Star Trek universe due in 2027 on PC and consoles — plus the Silent Hill 1 Remake which has officially entered full production. Having a smaller-scale exclusive project that can be completed without stretching their larger teams thin is smart resource management, and it lets them experiment with ideas they couldn’t risk on a AAA budget.

What Bloober Told Us About Their Nintendo Exclusive — Before We Knew What It Was

Earlier in 2026, before the reveal, Bloober Team had teased their Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive by saying it would “please fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Eternal Darkness.” That last one — Eternal Darkness — is the really interesting name to flag here. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was a GameCube horror classic built entirely around a sanity mechanic that messed with players’ perception of reality in increasingly creative ways. The game would pretend to delete your save file. It would lower the volume on your TV. It would make you think the controller had disconnected. It deliberately blurred the line between what was happening in the game and what was happening to you as a player.

Now look at Onyx. You’re playing as an Entity influencing the world through a touchscreen. The physical device in your hands is literally the instrument of your supernatural power. The horror of a character potentially losing his grip on reality is being communicated through hardware that sits in your actual hands. The Eternal Darkness comparison isn’t just marketing speak — it sounds like a genuine design philosophy reference, and that’s an incredibly promising sign for where Onyx could go with its horror mechanics.

    What We Still Don’t Know

Bloober Team is keeping a lot close to the chest right now. We don’t have a specific release window beyond “2027.” The full extent of the Entity’s abilities hasn’t been shown. We don’t know how long the game is, how progression works, whether there are multiple endings, or how deep the mind-reading mechanic goes in practice. The trailer established tone, visual style, and the core concept — but the mechanical breakdown is still largely a mystery.

What we do know is enough to be intrigued. The fog-choked town aesthetic feels distinctly Bloober — reminiscent of their Silent Hill sensibilities but apparently original in setting and story. The Entity framing is a novel angle for a horror protagonist. And the handheld-only design, while limiting in one sense, creates an intimate physical experience with the game that most horror titles can’t replicate.

    Release Window and Platform

Onyx: The Dark Grip launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2027, with no specific date announced yet. No other platforms have been confirmed, and given that the game’s core mechanics are built around Switch 2 hardware features, a port to other systems would require a fundamental redesign of how the game works. For now, this is a Switch 2 exclusive in the truest sense — not just a timed exclusive, but a game that literally couldn’t exist in the same form on any other platform.

If you’re building out your 2027 horror and Switch 2 wishlist right now, Onyx slots in alongside some serious competition. The Switch 2’s 2027 lineup is already stacked — Metroid Ravenous drops in January and Kirby and the World Beyond is coming in Spring — so Onyx is going to have to earn its place in a crowded year. Based on the concept alone, it looks more than capable of doing exactly that. And if you’re looking for something to play while you wait, the Stage Fright co-op reveal is another 2027 horror-adjacent game worth keeping on your radar.
