Overwatch Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den is live, and Blizzard has made it genuinely easy to stack up free cosmetics this season. The new Venture Excavation Initiative is a season-long event running until August 11, 2026 that rewards players with a total of 17 standard Loot Boxes, 1 Epic Loot Box, and 1 Legendary Loot Box — all for doing what you’d be doing anyway: logging in and playing the game. No battle pass purchase required, no complicated unlock chains, just consistent play over the course of the season.
Here’s a full breakdown of how the event works, what else is running in Season 3 right now, and why this particular season is worth jumping back in for.
How the Excavation Initiative Works
The system is built around a simple weekly loop Blizzard is calling a “dig.” To complete one dig, you need to log in and win one match on any three separate days during the week. Do that, and you earn a Loot Box. The event runs for eight weeks, and you can complete up to two digs per week — meaning the most active players can unlock a maximum of 16 digs over the season, each rewarding a base Loot Box, plus milestone bonuses on top of that.
Wins count for double progress, so if you’re grinding wins regularly, you can hit two digs in a week more easily. The progress tracker is built directly into the main lobby, so you can always see where you stand without digging through menus.
Full Milestone Reward Breakdown
- Complete 2 digs — 1 bonus standard Loot Box
- Complete 4 digs — 1 Epic Loot Box
- Complete 6 digs — 1 Legendary Loot Box
- Up to 16 digs total — 1 standard Loot Box per completed dig
Adding it all up: 16 base Loot Boxes from individual digs, 1 bonus base box at the 2-dig milestone, 1 Epic at 4 digs, and 1 Legendary at 6 digs — bringing the total to 17 standard Loot Boxes, 1 Epic, and 1 Legendary for players who hit maximum engagement across the full season. Casual players who only complete one dig per week will still walk away with 8 standard Loot Boxes just for maintaining a light weekly routine.
The deadline is August 11, 2026 when Season 3 ends. Given that the season runs eight weeks from the June 16 launch date, that gives players the full stretch to complete digs at their own pace.
Anima Strike Event Is Also Live Right Now — Act Fast
Running parallel to the Excavation Initiative but ending much sooner is the Anima Strike Event, which wraps up on July 6, 2026. This three-week event is tied to the launch of new hero Shion and the brand-new Neon Junction Hybrid map set in a neon-lit Tokyo-inspired district complete with giant robots, capsule shops, and nightlife streets that hide just how much Hashimoto Clan control runs through the area.
Anima Strike is much more reward-dense than the Excavation Initiative. Completing its challenges — which include daily, weekly, and milestone tracks — can net players up to 18 standard Loot Boxes, 3 Epic Loot Boxes, and 3 Legendary Loot Boxes. The event XP tracked with a bike icon in-game feeds into two reward tracks: a main track and a prestige track for players who push further. If you’re logging in this week, this is the higher-priority event purely on reward volume.
Community Crafted Arcade Event Starts June 30
Starting June 30, Overwatch launches its Community Crafted Arcade event, which shakes up how certain heroes play through player-driven rule modifications. Details on exactly which heroes are being tweaked haven’t been fully detailed yet, but the Community Crafted format has historically been one of the more chaotic and fun seasonal additions — the kind of event where the meta gets thrown out the window and you can just enjoy seeing familiar abilities do weird things.

Shion Is the Real Reason to Come Back
Beyond the events and free loot, Season 3 introduced Shion — Hero 52 — as a brand-new Damage character, and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. She’s a motorcycle-riding DPS flanker from the Hashimoto Clan armed with dual pistols, built to zigzag behind enemy lines and create chaos in backlines. Reddit and social media have been notably enthusiastic, with players calling her one of the best-designed characters Blizzard has released in years — high praise given the mixed reception some recent hero additions have received.
Season 3 also delivered a major Stadium mode update, reworking nearly the entire hero roster with full rebuilds on Hazard, Tracer, Kiriko, Sojourn, and Doomfist, among others. Grouping Restrictions for Ranked have also been removed, which is a significant competitive change that opens up how friends can queue together. The season is also running Quick Play: Hacked and the beginning of Overwatch Summer Games 2026, which adds further seasonal content on top of everything already listed.
Overwatch’s 2026 Comeback Is Real
It’s worth stepping back to look at the bigger picture here. After a rough stretch through 2024 and much of 2025, Overwatch dropped the “2” from its name, returned Loot Boxes to the game as free earnable rewards with better drop rates, and has been putting out content that fans are actually responding to. The anniversary event earlier this year stumbled, but Season 3 has landed well — developer communication is notably more open, new content is hitting the right notes, and events like the Excavation Initiative reward casual engagement without locking anything valuable behind paywalls.
If recent hero leaks are accurate, there are more interesting characters in the pipeline beyond Shion, which suggests the Season 3 momentum isn’t going to be a one-off. For players who stepped away from Overwatch during its rougher period, this is probably the best window to come back and see where things stand.
