Where to Find the Missing Hound (Dahuang) in Phantom Blade Zero

TL;DR

The Dahuang quest starts in the Village of Lu — speak with the Flower-Masked Hunter near the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell.
You receive the Hunter’s Dog Bell story item and the quest begins.
Dahuang is found in Pangzhen, in a backyard near the Pond of Fading Song Bell.
Enter the house east of the bell, clear the hostile dogs, and interact with the golden hound at the far wall.
No map marker is given — you have to find Dahuang on your own.
Reward: roughly 8,886–10,000 Remnant Dust.
You cannot save Dahuang.

Phantom Blade Zero is full of small, easy-to-miss side quests. The Dahuang quest is one of them — it starts with a brief, quiet moment in the Village of Lu and ends in a completely different region with no map marker to guide you. If you picked up the Hunter’s Dog Bell and then moved on without knowing where to go next, this guide has you covered.

What Is the Dahuang Quest?

Dahuang is a Tales quest in Phantom Blade Zero. “Dahuang” is the name of a dog — a golden hound belonging to a wounded hunter you encounter toward the end of the Village of Lu. The hunter, a Flower-Masked NPC, is gravely injured and desperately worried about his companion who has gone missing. He pleads for his dog to be spared from the Sha-Chi corruption spreading through the region.

It’s a short quest with no combat requirement at the finish line, but it does ask you to travel far — all the way to Pangzhen — with zero in-game directions once you leave the Village of Lu.

How to Start the Dahuang Quest – Village of Lu

The quest becomes available during Chapter 5: Heartless Remnants, after you’ve progressed significantly through the Village of Lu and defeated the required masters to unlock the central well.

Once the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell is active, look for the building just to the right of it. Head inside and you’ll find the Flower-Masked Hunter lying on a bed, badly wounded. He’s praying to the Lady of the Veil to spare his hound, Dahuang — a companion of more than ten years.

Speak with him. After the conversation, Soul receives the Hunter’s Dog Bell story item, and the Dahuang tale is added to your quest log. The objective simply reads: find the missing hound. No marker. No direction.

The hunter is located roughly 48 meters from the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell, slightly elevated above it. If you’ve already activated the bell, it won’t take long to find him.

Where to Find Dahuang – Pangzhen

Dahuang is not in the Village of Lu. The hound is in Pangzhen, the fourth region. You won’t be able to complete this quest until you’ve made meaningful progress through that area.

Specifically, you need to reach the Pond of Fading Song Bell in the southwestern part of Pangzhen. This bell comes up naturally as you progress through the region — it’s on the main story route and won’t require any detours to unlock.

Once you’re at the Pond of Fading Song Bell, here’s how to find the hound:

From the bell, look for a house to the east, roughly 67 meters away.
Enter the house and pass through into the backyard. You’ll see animal cages and encounter hostile dogs — clear them out.
Look toward the far wall at the back of the yard.
There you’ll find a golden-colored hound lying on the ground, peacefully still. This is Dahuang.
Walk up and interact with the hound to complete the quest.

The golden hound is unmistakable once you spot it — it stands out clearly against the ground and looks as though it has simply fallen asleep.

Can You Save Dahuang?

No. Dahuang is already gone by the time you arrive. There’s no way to save the dog or change the outcome of the quest. Interacting with the hound simply closes the tale and confirms what the hunter feared.

It’s one of those small, bittersweet moments the game uses well — a story told entirely through a brief NPC encounter and a single discovery in a back alley.

Dahuang Quest Reward

Completing the Dahuang tale rewards approximately 8,886 to 10,000 Remnant Dust. There is no unique item reward tied to this quest. The Remnant Dust is deposited automatically when you interact with the hound and the quest resolves.

Remnant Dust is always useful — it’s the main currency for weapon upgrades, Soul Tempering, and buying materials from shops throughout the game. For a full breakdown of how to spend it wisely, see our weapon upgrade guide and our all Soul Tempering materials guide.

Is the Dahuang Quest Missable?

The quest itself is not permanently missable in the way that some other Village of Lu quests are — the Flower-Masked Hunter stays in the room for the relevant portion of the game, and the hound’s location in Pangzhen remains available throughout the region. That said, it’s best to pick it up naturally as you pass through the Survivors’ Courtyard area, rather than leaving it for later and forgetting about it entirely.

If you’re trying to complete all Tales in the game, add this one to your checklist when you first reach the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell in Village of Lu.
