How to Start A Dream of Motherhood

The quest begins in the Village of Lu, right after you enter the main grounds following the Crossroads area where you meet Jewel.

Here is how to reach the starting point:

From the Well of the Three Puppets Bell, turn around and follow the left path until you reach a small ramp with a fork in the road.
Take the right route at the fork and enter the hut ahead.
Inside, you will find an old woman lying on a bed — this is the Sleeping Flower-Masked Weaver.
Interact with her. She will be murmuring in a trance-like state, pleading for a son from the mysterious Lady of the Veil.
This interaction adds A Dream of Motherhood to your quest journal.

The Weaver’s body is physically there, but her soul has been trapped inside a puppet somewhere in the village. She cannot wake up on her own. Your job is to find that puppet and destroy it.

How to Find the Puppet Containing the Weaver’s Soul

After starting the quest, leave the hut and continue up the hill — the other fork at the small ramp. Follow the path until you reach the Temple of Blue Fireflies Bell. Ring it to set a respawn point.

From there, follow the middle route deeper into the village near the Well of the Three Puppets area. Look for a building up the path behind the well. You will hear a weeping sound coming from inside — that is your signal you are in the right place.

Enter the building. Inside, you will encounter the Village Auntie — a weeping puppet enemy. This is the creature containing the Weaver’s soul.

Defeat the Village Auntie to destroy the puppet and free the Weaver’s soul. Winning the fight drops the Mother’s Talisman accessory directly, and the quest objective updates to return to the Weaver.

How to Complete A Dream of Motherhood

With the Village Auntie defeated and the Mother’s Talisman in hand, the final step is simple:

Fast travel to the Temple of Blue Fireflies Bell.
Head back down the hill and climb up the left path to return to the Weaver’s hut.
Interact with the old woman again.

Returning to her body completes A Dream of Motherhood. The Weaver breaks out of her trance and the quest closes.

A Dream of Motherhood Reward — Mother’s Talisman

The reward for completing this quest is the Mother’s Talisman, a Defensive accessory.

Effect: Restores 10% HP whenever your guard is broken.

On paper, this sounds like a drawback turned into a benefit. Getting your guard broken in Phantom Blade Zero usually means you just took a hit you could not stop. The Mother’s Talisman turns that moment into a small recovery window — instead of only taking damage, you also get a percentage of your health back.

In early fights where enemies break your guard often, this accessory gives you much more staying power. It essentially punishes the enemy for doing something they meant as a punishment to you. The effect is passive, requires nothing from you to trigger, and pairs well with other defensive accessories.

Tips for Defeating the Village Auntie

The Village Auntie is not a major boss, but she can catch you off guard if you are running low on medicine from other encounters nearby. A few things to keep in mind:

Rest at a Bell first. Fast travel to the Temple of Blue Fireflies Bell and rest before going into the building. This fully restores your medicine charges so you go in prepared.
She hits hard for an early-game encounter. Don’t treat her as a generic enemy. She is weeping and passive-looking until you engage, then she switches.
Use your Phantom Edges. Early in the Village of Lu you should have the Bastion or Iron Gauntlets available. Use them to break her guard and end the fight faster.
Parry her attacks. Landing clean parries keeps your HP up and builds Sha-Chi for a Phantom Edge follow-up.

Other Village of Lu Side Quests Worth Doing

While you are in the Village of Lu completing A Dream of Motherhood, there are several other short tales in the same area worth picking up. Doing them together saves backtracking later:

Dahuang — starts at the Survivors’ Courtyard in the Village of Lu.
Cui — starts at the Puppet Testing Grounds in the Village of Lu.
Young Master Lan — speak to Young Master Lan before entering the village proper, near the blue flower patch on the approach. His questline runs through the region.
