TL;DR
- Phantom Blade Zero has 25 Phantom Edges — secondary weapons that slot into your R2 button.
- You carry two Phantom Edges at a time alongside your two primary weapons.
- Most come from defeating specific bosses. Some require completing side quests.
- Many Phantom Edges double as exploration tools — they break chains, burn vine barriers, grapple across gaps, smash floors, and clear mist.
- The map highlights blocked obstacles in green once you own the matching Phantom Edge, so you always know where to backtrack.
- Illusory Pipa is the most involved to obtain — it requires collecting three separate parts across different regions.
What Are Phantom Edges in Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Edges are Soul’s secondary weapons, activated by pressing R2. They are completely separate from your two primary Blades and fill a different role in combat — some deal heavy single hits, others build status effects, and some give you crowd control, ranged pressure, or unique combo extenders.
You carry two Phantom Edges at a time and can switch between them with the right D-pad. Pressing R2 mid-combo fires your active Phantom Edge without interrupting your attack chain, which makes weaving them into fights feel natural once you get the timing down.
What makes Phantom Edges special beyond combat is their exploration role. A significant number of them act as keys to locked areas across the Wulin. Iron chains, burning vine barriers, breakable floors, mist passages, mechanical dials, and grapple points all require a specific Phantom Edge to open. The game marks these obstacles on the map and turns the marker green once you own the right tool, so you never have to guess what you need or where to go back.
Using a Phantom Edge for traversal does not use up any combat charges, so exploration is always free. This guide covers all 25 Phantom Edges, organized by the region where you find them, with what each one does in and out of combat.
Weeping Creek Valley Phantom Edges
Three Phantom Edges are available in the very first region. Two are combat-focused, but all three have important exploration uses you will rely on throughout the game.
- Dread Axe — Earned by defeating Axemaster Peng Meng at the Axemaster’s Fall area. In combat, hold R2 to charge and release for a heavy downward blow, with more damage at each charge stage. Outside combat, it breaks iron chains that block paths across multiple regions. Many routes in the early game require this before you can pass through.

- Feather Bow — Unlocked by completing the Purge the Sect side quest. Clear the archer camp uphill from the Creek Valley Plains Entrance to find the Broken-String Bow, then return it to the Brooding Old Archer at the Outpost for repair. The charged R2 shot deals high damage and can shoot down hanging objects that are otherwise out of reach. Our dedicated Feather Bow guide walks through this quest in detail.

- Hunter’s Chain Sickle — Dropped by defeating The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe at the Great Waterfall at the end of the region. Tap R2 to swing the sickle from mid to long range, with the blade end hitting harder than the chain. Outside combat, it lets you grapple across gaps and up to marked anchor points throughout the map — one of the most important traversal tools in the game. See our full Hunter’s Chain Sickle guide for more.
Crimson Forest Phantom Edges
Two Phantom Edges come from Crimson Forest. One is a quest reward tied to Quick Hand Zhang, and one is a straight boss drop.

- Flying Dagger — Earned by completing Quick Hand Zhang’s treasure requests in the Crimson Forest. Rescue Zhang and return the region’s three treasures: one beneath the Outlaw Trap, one inside the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon (requires the dungeon key from below Cliffside Lodge), and one in the dog-filled cave on the path to his hideout. Inflicts Poison on enemies and can shoot down hanging objects from range.

- Iron Gauntlets — Dropped by defeating Stone Hand, Iron Fever at the Mirrorwood Entrance. In combat, triggering this Phantom Edge boosts your damage output for 8 seconds. Great for burst windows against tough enemies.
Village of Lu Phantom Edges
Four Phantom Edges are found in the Village of Lu, and one of them — the Heartrend Pipa — is actually replaced later when you build the Illusory Pipa. There is also a notable Prayer Beads Phantom Edge here worth picking up for its utility.

- Bastion — Dropped by defeating Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper on the main route beyond Old Man Gen’s Hideout. Acts as a shield in combat, absorbing damage and releasing a shockwave. Outside combat, it protects against arrow traps, letting you walk through crossbow barriers safely.

- Kuye Temple Prayer Beads — Earned by defeating Master Bi Hai of Kuye Temple on the northern main route. For a detailed breakdown of what to do with these after you get them, see our guide on what to do with Prayer Beads in Phantom Blade Zero.

- Heartrend Pipa — Dropped by defeating Yuzan, No. 3 Musician Puppet at the Puppet Testing Grounds. Access the fight by descending through the Well of the Three Puppets when its thread barrier opens. In combat it unleashes dual colored sonic blades — red blades amplify your damage, while blue blades cause Sha-Chi depletion on enemies. Note: this is the earlier instrument version and is eventually replaced by the Illusory Pipa once repaired.

- Puppeteer’s Bell — Unlocked by collecting all of Firefly’s Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu to open the fog barrier at the Temple of Blue Fireflies, then defeating Dusk, the Puppeteer. In combat it summons two puppets — one with a sword and shield, and one with a spear and shield — to fight alongside you temporarily.
Pangzhen Phantom Edges
Pangzhen has the largest concentration of Phantom Edges in the game, delivering six across its many encounters and side quests. The Flaming Mane is the standout here because it requires an extra step after the boss fight before it becomes usable.

- Fire Meteor — Dropped by defeating Blaze, Shadow Warden Captain on the main route between South Gate Bridge and Jingyang Hall. A high-damage explosive Phantom Edge well suited for group encounters.

- Wolfjaw — Dropped by defeating Wu Xuan, the Fallen General in the western part of Pangzhen near the Backstreet Archway. A hard-hitting Phantom Edge that inflicts paralysis on enemies, leaving them briefly stunned and open to follow-up attacks.

- You Loong’s Deluge — Earned by defeating You Loong, Leader of the Blackwater Crew, near the western pond by the Banyan Tree. Inflicts the Wet status on enemies, making them vulnerable to Frost and Lightning damage. Outside combat, it extinguishes fire barriers, including the burning barrier near the Marketplace that blocks an entire section of Pangzhen.

- Thunder Spear — Dropped by defeating Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear, at Ancestral Shrine Square. Draws lightning from all directions and channels it into thunderous force. One of the most visually spectacular Phantom Edges in the game, and a favourite among reviewers for its sheer spectacle in fights.

- Flaming Mane — This one has two steps. First, defeat Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster to receive the Dormant Flaming Mane. Then take it to Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall for repair before it becomes usable. Attacks fill the enemy’s Burning meter — when it fills, Ignition triggers a burst of fire damage. Outside combat, it burns vine barriers including the route beside the Pond of Fading Song. Our Phantom Edge guides cover the full details.

- Goldblaze — Earned by returning all four regional treasures to Quick Hand Zhang at his Pangzhen hideout. The four treasures are inside Tianxiang Pavilion (get the key via the Tianxiang Pavilion Key quest), on the rooftops beyond the Marketplace fire barrier, in the garden house behind Wu Xuan’s arena, and in the building up the stairs before the Pond of Fading Song. Once unlocked, Goldblaze is a golden firelock that fires at range and knocks down hanging objects, functioning as a Ranged Shot tool.
Mandate Encampment Phantom Edges
Two Phantom Edges come from the Mandate Encampment. Both are earned through boss encounters in the region.
- Bashpole — Dropped by defeating Wan Jun, the Coppermaul at the Main Encampment Gate. In combat it can slam from the air for a powerful ground-pound attack. Outside combat, it smashes marked floors to open vertical paths downward — including the floor leading into the Mandate Encampment itself and several hidden areas discovered by backtracking. Our Backstreet Cellar Crank guide covers how the Encampment area fits together.

- Swordsman’s Summon — Dropped by defeating the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation, found between the Three Towers and the Tower Rear Exit. Summons a puppet warrior to fight alongside you for a short time.

Meigu Lake Phantom Edges

Three Phantom Edges are tied to Meigu Lake, including the War Wagon, which requires finishing Old Man Gen’s full questline that started back in Pangzhen.
- War Wagon — Earned by completing Old Man Gen’s The Journey Home questline. To get it, investigate Old Man Gen’s house in Pangzhen (using the Backstreet Cellar Crank area), collect the Dusty Old Wooden Comb from the body inside, and return it to Old Man Gen. Then sail to the Frozen Lake Dock in northwestern Meigu Lake to meet him and receive the War Wagon.

- Loong Trident — Dropped by defeating You Loong, the Frenzied Blackwater Crew Leader, at the Blackwater Crew Dock on Meigu Lake. This is a separate encounter from the You Loong fight in Pangzhen — a stronger rematch version of the same boss. A powerful heavy Phantom Edge with strong shield-breaking capability.

- One-Eyed Bow — Dropped by defeating the One-Eyed Archer boss on the eastern island of Meigu Lake. Sail to the One-Eyed Isle Dock to reach the fight. The bow deals increased damage to enemies at full HP and can shoot down hanging objects from medium to long range, making it a strong opener for encounters.
The Illusory Pipa – A Special Case
The Illusory Pipa is the most complex Phantom Edge to obtain in the game. It requires collecting three separate parts from three different regions and then bringing them all to Myst at her tavern in Pangzhen for repair. The three parts are the Head from Dusk the Puppeteer (Village of Lu), the Backplate from inside the building after Yubi’s Training Grounds fight (Mandate Encampment), and the Strings from Yan Qiansui at the southern Meigu Lake songhouse.
To access the Yan Qiansui encounter, you first need to collect Yan’er’s Memory Flowers in the area. Once you have all three parts, take them to Myst and she repairs the pipa, giving you the completed Illusory Pipa. This replaces the Heartrend Pipa you earned earlier in the Village of Lu.
The Illusory Pipa is crucial for exploration. It clears mist and wind barriers that block entire sections of the map, including the northeastern lake passage that leads to the Mountain of Imprisonment. Completing this Phantom Edge is part of the Whence the Weeping quest chain and is required to access the game’s later regions. For more on that questline, see our Whence the Weeping walkthrough.
Mountain of Imprisonment Phantom Edges
Three Phantom Edges are found in the Mountain of Imprisonment, an optional area accessed through Meigu Lake. These are some of the most powerful and visually distinctive tools in the game.

- Ink Cut — Earned by completing the Hero’s Lament side quest. Retrieve the cage lever from the ruined building near Commander’s Platform, use it to lower the hanging cage containing Moji’s Bloodstained Sword, then return the sword to Liu Yi near the Shrine Outer Gate. In combat, ending the blade combo chain after the second attack leaves behind a spinning blade that continues to damage nearby enemies.

- Flying Guillotine — Dropped by defeating Huangxing, the Kunlun Renegade, at The Lady’s Shrine. In combat it breaks through enemy shields with ease. Outside combat, it operates mechanical dials that open hidden walls and rooms throughout the Mountain of Imprisonment. Reviewers noted it as a standout for both its visual flair and how satisfying its executions feel against low-HP enemies.

- Inanis’ Radiant Fan — Also found at The Lady’s Shrine. After defeating Huangxing, continue into the depths of The Lady’s Shrine and speak to Inanis. You receive this fan as part of the Whence the Weeping questline. This is one of the last pieces of optional content tied to that long-running quest chain.
Mirage Estate Phantom Edge
The final Phantom Edge in the game comes near the very end of the story.

- Tiger Cannon — Dropped by defeating Lei Dang, the Tiger Cannon, at the Perfect Vessel Pond at the end of Mirage Estate. In combat it deals heavy ranged damage and is excellent against groups. Outside combat, it destroys marked stone barriers — revisit the wall south of the Weeping Creek Long Pillar and the underground tunnel at Cliffside Lodge to open previously blocked areas. Our dedicated Tiger Cannon guide has more detail.
Tips for Collecting All Phantom Edges
- Check the map for green markers after each new Phantom Edge. Whenever you unlock a new one, the map updates to show all the obstacles it can clear. This is the fastest way to know where to backtrack.
- Don’t skip the Purge the Sect quest. The Feather Bow is easy to miss because it is tied to an early side quest rather than a boss fight. Speak to the Brooding Old Archer at the Outpost and follow his request before leaving Weeping Creek Valley.
- Start the Journey Home quest early. The War Wagon from Old Man Gen takes a long time to complete because the quest spans Pangzhen and Meigu Lake. Pick it up as soon as you arrive in Pangzhen.
- Get the Flaming Mane repaired before moving on. Many players defeat the Lion Dance Grandmaster and forget to visit Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall. Without the repair, the Flaming Mane stays dormant and useless. Make a point to visit Lei Dang immediately after the fight.
- The Illusory Pipa is required for late-game access. Without it, mist barriers stay up and you cannot reach the Mountain of Imprisonment or complete the Whence the Weeping quest. Prioritize collecting all three parts before trying to push through the later regions of Meigu Lake.
