What Is the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero?
The Feather Bow is a Ranged Phantom Edge in Phantom Blade Zero and your earliest access to any kind of bow in the game. It is a powerful bow repaired and restrung by a retired archer โ described in-game as a formidable weapon at range. Its field ability is Ranged Shot, which lets you fire at hanging objects in the environment to knock loot to the ground that would otherwise be out of reach.
Unlike the other ranged option you will find later โ the more powerful Night Owl charged longbow โ the Feather Bow is specifically tied to a side quest you can easily walk past in the first couple of hours. Miss the quest trigger and you can lose the bow permanently on that playthrough.
This guide covers exactly where to find the Old Archer, how to complete Purge the Sect, and what the Feather Bow can do for you.
Purge the Sect Quest โ How to Start It
The Feather Bow comes from the Purge the Sect Tale quest, given by the Brooding Old Archer. He is a missable NPC sitting on a rooftop near the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. He does not appear on the map until you talk to him.
Here is exactly where to find him:
- Enter the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley and interact with the Outpost Bell to activate it.
- Follow the path through the Outpost past the merchant NPCs until you reach an Old Beggar sitting near the far end.
- From the beggar, look to your right. You will see a house with scratch marks on the wall โ these are the climbable handholds. Use them to climb onto the roof.
- The Brooding Old Archer is sitting on the rooftop of this house, directly west of the Outpost Bell.
Talk to him and exhaust all his dialogue. This starts the Purge the Sect Tale and marks your objective: clear the Ruthless Archer Camp to the north of the Outpost.
How to Complete Purge the Sect
Step 1 โ Head North to the Ruthless Archer Camp

From the Outpost, head north along the main story path. You will naturally pass through the Ruthless Archer Camp as part of the main route through the Steel and Steam chapter โ it sits between the Outpost and the Sha-Chi Tower. The area has a bell at the top called the Ruthless Archer Camp Bell.
The camp is populated with enemy archers and other hostile disciples. Clear all of them out as you work through the area. You are looking for the last group of disciples near the end of the camp section.
Step 2 โ Defeat the Last Disciple and Collect the Broken-String Bow
After defeating the final disciple in the Ruthless Archer Camp, they will drop two items:
- A Blackstone Fragment โ a general upgrade material
- A Broken-String Bow โ the quest item you need to return to the Old Archer
Pick up the Broken-String Bow. Your quest objective will update to return the bow to the Old Archer.

Step 3 โ Return the Bow to the Brooding Old Archer
Fast travel or walk back to the Outpost Bell and find the Old Archer on his rooftop again. Hand over the Broken-String Bow. He will repair and restring it, then give you the finished Feather Bow as your reward for completing Purge the Sect.
Do this before entering the Sha-Chi Tower if you can. The walkthrough recommendation is to hand over the bow and collect the Feather Bow right after reaching the Ruthless Archer Camp Bell โ then return to continue the main path. This locks in the reward before you forget or run out of time.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Purge the Sect Is Missable
This quest has a hard deadline. If you defeat the main boss at the end of the Crimson Forest region before returning the Broken-String Bow to the Old Archer, the quest automatically fails and the Feather Bow is permanently lost for that playthrough.
That means you have a window from the moment you start the quest in Weeping Creek Valley all the way through the Crimson Forest region โ but the moment you kill the Crimson Forest main boss (Bai Chilian), it is too late. Complete Purge the Sect before then.
The simplest rule: as soon as you collect the Broken-String Bow from the Ruthless Archer Camp, go back and finish the quest immediately. Do not sit on it.
What Does the Feather Bow Do?
In Combat
Activate the Feather Bow with R2 (or R on PC keyboard). Tapping R2 fires a quick shot. Holding R2 charges the bow โ releasing a fully charged shot deals significantly more damage and depletes more of the enemy’s Sha-Chi.
Its defining combat trait is a bonus to damage against enemies at full health. This makes it especially effective as an opener โ fire a charged shot at a fresh enemy before closing in for melee to maximize the bonus. Against bosses with a slow approach phase, a well-timed charge shot at the start of the fight can shave off meaningful health before you even draw your primary weapon.
After Soul Tempering, the Feather Bow unlocks Precision Shot โ releasing the Phantom Edge during a glowing mid-charge window increases damage and Sha-Chi depletion significantly. This upgrade makes the bow considerably more powerful and worth investing in if you use it regularly.
Field Ability โ Ranged Shot
The Feather Bow’s field ability is Ranged Shot. In exploration, you will encounter hanging objects strung up above โ bundles of materials, pouches, or containers dangling from ropes or branches that are out of reach. Aim and fire the Feather Bow at them and they drop to the ground, letting you collect whatever was inside.
Keep an eye out for these in the Ruthless Archer Camp itself and in other areas across Weeping Creek Valley. Some of them contain upgrade materials or useful consumables that you would otherwise walk straight past.

Feather Bow vs Night Owl โ What Is the Difference?
The game has two bow-type Phantom Edges. Here is how they compare:
- Feather Bow โ early game, obtained in Weeping Creek Valley via Purge the Sect. Better against full-health targets. Quick to deploy and great as an opener in any fight.
- Night Owl โ a teak longbow found later in the game. Offers a precision aim mode with slight time-slow during draw, a piercing charged shot that penetrates multiple targets, and a Rain of Arrows spread for crowd coverage. More versatile in boss fights, with weak-spot targeting that can interrupt boss attacks mid-animation.
The Feather Bow is the better early pick for straightforward damage against fresh enemies. The Night Owl replaces it in the mid-to-late game for players who want a deeper ranged toolkit. Notably, both can be equipped simultaneously if you use two Phantom Edge slots for them โ though most players prefer one bow alongside a melee or utility Phantom Edge.
For a comparison to the other major ranged Phantom Edge in the game, see our Phantom Blade Zero Tiger Cannon guide โ the cannon is the other key ranged option, obtained much later but dealing massive damage and shattering walls across every region.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you find the bow in Phantom Blade Zero?
The first bow โ the Feather Bow โ is earned by completing the Purge the Sect Tale in Weeping Creek Valley. Talk to the Brooding Old Archer on the rooftop west of the Outpost Bell to start it. Clear the Ruthless Archer Camp enemies, return the Broken-String Bow they drop, and he gives you the Feather Bow as a reward.
Can you miss the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero?
Yes โ the Feather Bow is missable. If you defeat the main boss at the end of the Crimson Forest region before handing the Broken-String Bow back to the Old Archer, the Purge the Sect quest fails automatically and the bow is gone for that playthrough. Complete the quest before finishing Crimson Forest.
How do you use the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero?
Press R2 (or R on PC) to fire a quick shot. Hold R2 and release to fire a charged shot that deals more damage. In the field, it knocks down hanging objects to loot materials from the ground. After Soul Tempering, you unlock Precision Shot for a stronger damage window during the mid-charge phase.
Is the Feather Bow or Night Owl better in Phantom Blade Zero?
The Feather Bow is better early on, especially as an opener against full-health enemies. The Night Owl is the stronger ranged Phantom Edge overall โ it offers precision aiming, weak-spot targeting that can interrupt boss attacks, and a Rain of Arrows spread for groups. If you can only equip one, the Night Owl takes over once you have it. Both can be equipped at the same time if you dedicate both Phantom Edge slots to ranged options.
What is the Feather Bow’s field ability?
Its field ability is Ranged Shot โ it lets you shoot hanging objects in the environment (bundles, pouches, containers dangling from ropes or branches) to drop them to the ground so you can loot whatever is inside.
