Pokemon GO Global GO Fest 2026: Get Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, and Zeraora For Free Today

If you have Pokemon GO installed on your phone, today is not the day to be away from it. The Global GO Fest 2026 is live right now, and it’s handing out three seriously rare Pokemon completely free — Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, and Zeraora — for anyone who simply logs in and plays during event hours. This is a first on multiple fronts, and if you miss it today or tomorrow, you’ll be kicking yourself.

The event runs July 11 and July 12, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time each day. For the first time in the game’s history, Global GO Fest is completely free — no ticket required. That means every single bonus, Special Research, and shiny rate boost is available to all trainers just by being active during those hours.

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y Are Making Their Pokemon GO Debut Right Now

This is the big one. Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y have never been available in Pokemon GO before — not anywhere, not at any previous event outside the three in-person GO Fest stops in Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen. Today and tomorrow is the global debut for both Mega forms, and you don’t need to spend a single coin to get them.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Saturday, July 11: Mega Mewtwo X appears in Super Mega Raids
    • Sunday, July 12: Mega Mewtwo Y appears in Super Mega Raids

Defeat the raid boss to earn the Mega Energy needed to Mega Evolve your own Mewtwo into whichever form you battled. On top of that, any Mewtwo you catch from these Super Mega Raids will already have at least one Mega Level unlocked — meaning you can Mega Evolve it straight away without paying the initial energy cost. Get lucky and it might even come pre-loaded at Mega Level 2 or 3.

You also get up to nine free Raid Passes per day just by spinning Photo Discs at Gyms, which is an absurd amount of free access compared to a normal raid day. Use them wisely — Mega Mewtwo X is only on Saturday and Mega Mewtwo Y is only on Sunday, so there’s no crossover.

The Genetic Mastery Timed Research: Choose Your Path

On top of the raids, there’s a branching Timed Research experience called Genetic Mastery that gives you extra Mewtwo Mega Energy through tasks. The research has a shared set of early steps before branching into an X path or a Y path — and you can only choose one. Whichever path you pick locks in which form you’ll get candy and Mega Energy for through the research tasks.

The important thing here is that this Timed Research expires at 7:00 PM local time when the event ends tonight (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday). If you don’t complete the tasks and claim your rewards before the clock hits 7 PM, the research disappears. Don’t sit on it — knock it out as early as possible so you’re not scrambling in the final hour.

If you’re not sure which to pick, most of the competitive Pokemon GO community currently leans toward Mega Mewtwo X first because of its Psychic/Fighting dual typing, which gives it broader coverage. But both are worth building eventually, so don’t stress too hard — you can still get both forms through raids across both days.

Mewtwo Caught From These Raids Know Special Moves

One more reason to raid as much as possible today and tomorrow. Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo X Super Mega Raids will know the Fast Attack Counter, while Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo Y raids will know the Charged Attack Psystrike. These are exclusive move assignments tied directly to the raid form, so the form you fight on each day determines what move your new Mewtwo arrives with.

How to Get Zeraora For Free: A Thunderous Discovery Special Research

Zeraora is making its global Pokemon GO debut this weekend as well. The Mythical Electric-type known as the Thunderclap Pokemon is available to every trainer who logs into the game during the GO Fest Global weekend — no ticket, no purchase, just log in and the Special Research called A Thunderous Discovery will appear in your queue automatically.

The research runs eight steps and follows Professor Willow tracking down Zeraora across the event. You’ll work through tasks like catching Electric-type Pokemon, completing raids, and eventually befriending your new Mythical. The Zeraora encounter sits in Step 6, and the final steps have you spending time with Zeraora as your buddy to wrap up the story. Rewards along the way include Stardust, Zeraora Candy, Super Incubators, and event stickers.

The big difference between Zeraora’s research and the Mewtwo content is timing. A Thunderous Discovery has no expiration date. You need to pick it up by logging in this weekend, but once it’s in your account, you can complete it at whatever pace works for you — even weeks from now. That said, grinding through it during GO Fest hours makes the raid tasks much easier since activity is at its peak.

If you already caught Zeraora at one of the in-person GO Fest events in Tokyo, Chicago, or Copenhagen, don’t worry — you’ll receive 26 Zeraora Candy in place of the encounter, so the research is still worth completing.

Is Zeraora Actually Worth It Competitively?

Yes — genuinely. Zeraora is the best Mythical Pokemon for raiding in Pokemon GO right now, ranking S-Tier as an Electric attacker with a DPS that edges out Xurkitree and sits just behind Regieleki. Its signature move Plasma Fists is one of the strongest Electric Charged Attacks in the game, and the eventual arrival of Mega Zeraora down the line is projected to make it the single most powerful Electric attacker available. Getting Zeraora now, building up its Candy, and having it powered up for when Mega Zeraora eventually lands is a smart long-term move. This is one of those rare cases where a free event Pokemon is legitimately meta-relevant, not just a cool collectible.

Everything Else Happening at Global GO Fest 2026

Beyond the three headline Pokemon, GO Fest Global is packed with additional content running across both days:

    • Hourly habitat rotations covering all 18 Pokemon types across the weekend — Stormfire Peaks on Saturday morning, Astral Tides in the afternoon, Dragonflight Summit in the evening, and different habitats on Sunday
    • Boosted shiny rates across all event-themed Pokemon for trainers who log in during event hours
    • Global Challenges that unlock bonus events if the worldwide player base completes enough catching tasks each hour
    • Special Background Mewtwo with the potential for a commemorative 10th anniversary-themed background on catches from raids between July 6 and 12
    • Six Special Trades per day and reduced Stardust costs for trading — a great time to exchange duplicates with friends

The GO Pass Deluxe also has a few exclusive perks for anyone who spent on it, including a Mewtwo encounter with a Special Background and guaranteed perfect IVs (with a 1 in 20 shiny chance), a Gold Bottle Cap at Rank 100, and a Team Leader Pose avatar item. But the core content — Mega Mewtwo and Zeraora — is fully free for everyone.

The Bigger Picture: Pokemon GO’s Massive July

GO Fest 2026 Global is happening in the middle of what is already the biggest month in the game’s recent history. Pokemon GO is celebrating its 10th anniversary this July, and the festivities have been stacking up all month. A special Gimmighoul variant holding a coin with the number 10 debuted earlier in July for the anniversary event and is available throughout the entire month. Niantic also recently rebranded to Scopely Explore following its acquisition by Monopoly GO developer Scopely, marking a new chapter for the game going into its second decade.

Looking ahead, a Rayquaza event kicks off on July 25 where players can obtain the Meteorite item required to Mega Evolve Rayquaza — another major addition for anyone building their raid roster. The game also just added an in-game calendar to help players track everything happening across the Forever Forward season, which runs through September 8.

But for right now, the priority is Mega Mewtwo and Zeraora. Get your nine Raid Passes spinning, pick your Genetic Mastery path, and make sure A Thunderous Discovery is in your account before 7 PM tomorrow. This is genuinely one of the best free events Pokemon GO has ever run.
