The Pokemon Trading Card Game’s 30th anniversary year has been building toward something big since January, and now the centerpiece finally has a date attached to it. The Pokemon Company confirmed on April 2 that the 30th Celebration expansion will launch in Japan on September 16, 2026 — with a worldwide release expected to follow on or around the same date, marking a historic first for the franchise.
This is the set collectors and competitive players have been waiting for all year. And based on what’s been revealed so far, it looks like The Pokemon Company is pulling out all the stops.
September 16 — And the Date Itself Is a Callback
The September 16 date isn’t arbitrary. Most Japanese Pokemon TCG sets release on Fridays, but 30th Celebration is dropping on a Wednesday. That’s an intentional nod to Japan’s 20th Anniversary set, which released on the exact same date — September 16 — back in 2016. It’s a small detail, but it signals that The Pokemon Company is treating this as more than just another set drop. This is meant to feel like an event.
For international players, the expected worldwide release means anyone outside Japan should be opening packs around the same window — possibly Friday, September 18, to account for time zones. Either way, the era of waiting weeks or months for Japan’s sets to reach Western shores seems to be over, at least for this one.
What Makes 30th Celebration Different from a Standard Set
The changes to the Japanese product alone make this worth paying attention to. Standard Japanese booster packs contain five cards. 30th Celebration packs will contain six — and every single card in the pack will be printed as holofoil. The pack price reflects that, jumping from the usual 200 yen to 360 yen, with a full booster box of 20 packs priced at 7,200 yen.
Beyond the structural changes to the pack format, The Pokemon Company is introducing a brand-new rarity exclusive to this set. Pikachu, Mew, and Mewtwo have all been confirmed as cards appearing in the new rarity tier, and the artwork shown off during Pokemon Day in February displayed them with a distinctive opalescent sheen — something that hasn’t been seen in the TCG before. Whether this is a visual treatment, a new foil pattern, or tied to a mechanical element remains to be officially clarified, but the collector community is already anticipating that these will be the chase cards of the year.

The Espeon & Umbreon Premium Deck Set
Dropping on the exact same day as 30th Celebration is a Premium Deck Set focusing on Espeon and Umbreon — two of the most beloved Eeveelutions and perennial fan favorites in the TCG’s collector market. The pre-built decks are expected to spotlight both Pokemon in the new anniversary rarity, though The Pokemon Company has kept specific details under wraps for now.
For anyone who’s tried to get their hands on Umbreon cards in recent years, the collector community is already bracing for this one. The combination of a new rarity, the anniversary hype, and two of the TCG’s most sought-after Pokemon in a single product release is exactly the kind of thing that tends to disappear from shelves fast. If you’re planning to pick it up at retail, having a game plan ahead of September would be wise.
Classic Reprints Are Confirmed — This Is the Celebrations Follow-Up We’ve Been Waiting For
One of the most appealing parts of 30th Celebration is its role as a spiritual successor to 2021’s Celebrations expansion, which marked the TCG’s 25th anniversary by reprinting iconic cards from across the game’s history in a special Classics Collection subset. That set was enormously popular with collectors, and 30th Celebration is set to follow the same formula.
Several confirmed reprints have already been revealed through the 2026 Pokemon Day presentation, including Pikachu & Zekrom GX from the Team Up set, Solgaleo GX from the Sun and Moon Base Set, and the crystal Lugia from Aquapolis — a card that’s had a devoted following for over two decades. The teaser footage shown in February also highlighted iconic cards across multiple eras and languages, suggesting the Classics Collection subset will reach deeper into the franchise’s back catalogue than many are expecting.
For long-term collectors, this is the kind of set that tends to appreciate over time. Anniversary products with high-quality reprints and exclusive rarities have historically been among the most sought-after sealed product in the hobby’s secondary market, and 30th Celebration has all the ingredients.
What Comes Before September: The Road There Is Packed
September might feel a long way off, but the Pokemon TCG isn’t leaving fans with nothing in the meantime. The next confirmed major expansion is Chaos Rising, releasing May 22, 2026. It’s the fourth set in the Mega Evolution series and brings Mega Greninja ex as its headliner — one of the most globally recognized Pokemon in the franchise. Pre-release events are scheduled for May 9 through 17 at participating game stores, which gives players a chance to get hands-on with the set before its official launch.
Beyond Chaos Rising, the anniversary year has already delivered some genuinely significant releases. Ascended Heroes launched in January as the largest set in the TCG’s history at 295 cards, introducing thirteen Mega Evolution Pokemon ex and a new Mega Hyper Rare rarity. Perfect Order followed in late March as a more focused, competitively oriented set. Both helped set the tone for what’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious years the TCG has ever had.
Pokemon TCG Live has also been handing out free packs, decks, and rewards throughout the anniversary period for digital players, making it a good time to be involved in the game at every level.
The Bigger Picture
The 30th anniversary is a genuinely rare moment in the Pokemon TCG’s history. Simultaneous worldwide releases, brand-new rarities, all-holofoil packs, premium anniversary deck sets, and a deep cut of classic reprints — it’s a product slate that’s trying to serve collectors, competitive players, and nostalgic fans all at once. Whether The Pokemon Company can actually keep product on shelves long enough for everyone to get a piece is a separate conversation, but the ambition on display is hard to argue with.
September 16 is the date to mark. The wait until then, at least, shouldn’t be boring — Chaos Rising alone is going to give the community plenty to talk about between now and then.
