Rayman Is Coming Back — Just Not Quite When We Thought

After years of the franchise sitting completely dormant, Rayman Legends Retold was shaping up to be one of the most exciting releases of late 2026. Ubisoft had been building hype since the big State of Play reveal in June, October 1 was locked in, and everything seemed on track. Then, on September 14 — barely two weeks before launch — the official Rayman account posted the news nobody wanted to see: it’s delayed.

The new date is December 3, 2026. A two-month slip that, while frustrating, comes with one very strange twist: the game had already gone gold before the announcement dropped. That’s what makes this one feel a bit different from your typical “we need more time” situation.

    What Ubisoft Actually Said

The statement from the dev team was short and to the point. They confirmed the gold status, acknowledged the delay, and said they “decided to take extra time to make sure every detail gets the care it deserves.” The message was signed off by the Rayman Dev Team and included a thank-you to fans for their patience and trust.

What they didn’t say is what, specifically, still needs that extra care. When a game goes gold, the general understanding is that the release build is done and ready. That doesn’t mean development completely stops — studios keep patching, fixing bugs, and prepping day-one updates — but it does make a full delay at that stage pretty unusual. Ubisoft hasn’t elaborated beyond their initial statement, so for now fans are left to speculate. The September 22 Game Overview trailer and hands-on impressions should tell us a lot more about where the game actually stands.

What Rayman Legends Retold Actually Is

If you haven’t been following this one closely, here’s the deal. This is not just a remaster with a resolution bump and a new title card slapped on the box. Rayman Legends Retold is a full ground-up reimagining of the beloved 2013 platformer, built on Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine with completely new 3D visuals.

The original game’s levels are all back, but the content additions are genuinely substantial. There’s a brand-new sixth realm that didn’t exist in the original game, four new musical stages (a massive deal given how iconic those levels were), dragon-riding sequences, fully voiced cinematics (which is wild because Rayman has basically always communicated through gibberish and mime), a new story with a shadowy villain stirring up chaos in the Glade of Dreams, and a return of Cave of Trials challenges. Local co-op for up to four players is in as well, and Kung Foot is back with improved controls and customizable rules.

On top of all that, every copy of Rayman Legends Retold includes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition — an updated version of the 2011 game with 4K visuals, 60fps support, new collectibles, and quality-of-life improvements. That standalone edition is also being sold separately and will hit on December 3 as well.

For $39.99 on all platforms, the package is genuinely solid — assuming the final product delivers on everything Ubisoft has been showing.

Another big comeback is happening in gaming right now — Bayonetta is officially joining Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for free

Why Going Gold and Then Delaying Is Such a Big Deal

“Going gold” has traditionally been the finish line — the moment the team declares the game complete and hands it off for manufacturing and distribution. Delays before gold? Pretty common, honestly. Delays after gold? That’s rare, and it turns heads.

Now, it’s worth being clear: going gold doesn’t mean absolutely nothing can change. Studios routinely keep working after that point, addressing bugs, optimizing performance, building out that day-one patch that downloads the moment you boot up the game. But choosing to hold an entire release for two extra months at that stage signals something more than the usual polish pass. Whatever the team spotted — or whatever someone higher up decided — it was enough to push past what many studios would consider the point of no return.

The lack of explanation from Ubisoft doesn’t help. A line about wanting to ensure quality is technically a reason, but it’s not the kind of transparency that settles fan nerves, especially given the company’s rocky stretch with its own releases and the cancellation of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake earlier this year. That said, Rayman Legends Retold is in a very different situation — it has a firm 2026 date and a two-month slip, not an outright cancellation. Important difference.

Meanwhile, Valve is dealing with its own complications on the hardware side — here’s what’s happening with Steam Deck 2

The December Date Actually Has Some Upsides

Here’s the thing about October 2026 — it was absolutely stacked. Gears of War: E-Day, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Minecraft Dungeons 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and a pile of other releases were all competing for attention and wallets in that same window. A $39.99 platformer remake, however great it might be, could easily get buried in that noise.

December 3 is a cleaner runway. It gets Rayman into the holiday shopping season, puts some distance between it and the October cluster, and gives the game a better shot at being seen on its own terms. The one wrinkle is that GTA 6 is hovering somewhere in that December window too — a bit of historical deja vu, since the original Rayman Legends was famously delayed back in 2013 and ended up landing near GTA V. History has a funny way of repeating itself.

What to Do Before December 3

The immediate next date to circle is September 22. That’s when the Game Overview trailer drops and when select press and content creators will be sharing their hands-on impressions. That’s going to be the real first look at where Rayman Legends Retold sits right now — and honestly, given the post-gold delay, those impressions are going to be read pretty carefully.

If you want to lock in your copy early, the game is already up for pre-purchase on Steam at $39.99 and is also available on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and will be on the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store. Cloud play via GeForce Now and Blacknut is confirmed for launch day too. And if you’re on Ubisoft+, you’ll be able to play it through the subscription.

For Rayman fans who’ve been waiting years for this franchise to get some real attention, December 3 is still very much happening. It’s just going to require a little more patience — which, at this point, Rayman fans have had plenty of practice with.
