Rockstar Game Workers Union Now Stronger Than Ever — Could Force Mandatory Recognition Before GTA 6 Launch

The Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) is in a stronger position today than at any point since its formation, and that growing membership has put formal union recognition squarely on the table — potentially the largest such recognition in the UK games industry’s history. In a new video from People Make Games, IWGB president Alex Marshall confirmed that negotiations with Rockstar are underway and that the union is prepared to push for statutory recognition if voluntary recognition doesn’t happen.

Here’s the full story of how the RGWU got here, what’s being asked for, and what it means for the UK games industry.

How the Rockstar Game Workers Union Got Started

The RGWU’s origins trace back to October 2025, when Rockstar fired 31 employees across its UK offices — in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London — and its Canadian offices. The company’s stated reason was gross misconduct: specifically, that the workers had shared confidential information about GTA 6 on what Rockstar characterized as a public Discord server.

The IWGB immediately disputed that framing. According to the union, all 31 fired workers were either already members of the IWGB Game Workers branch or in the process of joining — and the timing of the dismissals, coming just days before Take-Two confirmed GTA 6’s delay to November 19, 2026, heightened suspicions about the true motivation. IWGB president Alex Marshall called it “the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry.” Rockstar denied any connection between the firings and union membership, maintaining the decision was made entirely on misconduct grounds and that management didn’t know who was or wasn’t a union member.

The fallout was immediate and loud. Protests took place outside Take-Two’s UK offices in the months following. The incident reached UK Parliament, with then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the firings “deeply concerning.” Scottish Labour MPs accused the studio of stonewalling legal proceedings. A separate legal claim alleging blacklisting — that Rockstar actively worked to impede the fired workers’ future employment prospects — was filed on top of the wrongful dismissal case. The full employment tribunal hearing is scheduled for September 2026, a date that sits just weeks before GTA 6’s November launch.

The ‘Chilling Effect’ — and Then the Rebound

As Marshall explained to People Make Games, the October 2025 firings created what he described as a “chilling effect” on unionisation efforts at Rockstar in the immediate aftermath. Workers who had been considering joining held back. Organising momentum stalled. That’s exactly the kind of outcome a studio accused of union busting would want.

But the effect didn’t last. Marshall described an “element of rebuilding” that followed, and by the time the RGWU was formally launched in May 2026, membership had already begun growing past where it had been before the firings. The RGWU formally announced itself through social media and a video detailing its goals, positioning the union launch as the next step in a campaign that the IWGB says has been running inside Rockstar since 2019.

By June 30, 2026, the RGWU had submitted a formal request for voluntary recognition — and Marshall says membership is now at its highest point ever, representing a “significant proportion” of the workforce across Rockstar’s UK sites. The exact membership figure hasn’t been disclosed publicly, but the fact that statutory recognition is being openly discussed as a live option indicates the numbers are already past the legal threshold to pursue it.

Voluntary Recognition vs Statutory Recognition — What’s the Difference?

These are two distinct paths to the same destination, and understanding both matters here.

    • Voluntary recognition is where the employer simply agrees to formally recognise the union. Negotiations begin, collective bargaining rights are established, and workers gain additional legal protections. This is the route the RGWU is currently pursuing. A first meeting between the IWGB and Rockstar is expected soon.
    • Statutory recognition is what happens if the employer refuses to engage in good faith. The union can apply to the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC), a body under the Department for Business and Trade, which can then compel recognition if the union meets the membership threshold — generally, a majority of the bargaining unit. Marshall was direct about this when speaking to People Make Games: if Rockstar doesn’t engage properly, the IWGB is “very happy to use different mechanisms to ensure recognition.”

In plain terms, Rockstar has two options. It can sit down and negotiate with the union now. Or it can refuse, and the union will apply for statutory recognition and potentially have it forced through regardless.

What Recognition Would Mean for the UK Games Industry

If the RGWU achieves recognition — voluntary or statutory — it would become the second recognised video game union in the UK. Currently, the only recognised union in the industry is at ZA/UM, the studio behind Disco Elysium, which achieved recognition in October 2025 through the same IWGB framework.

The scale difference is enormous though. ZA/UM is a small studio. Rockstar employs hundreds of people across its UK sites. An RGWU recognition would dwarf anything the UK games industry has seen before in terms of organised labour, and it would set a precedent for every other major studio operating in the UK — many of which have their own ongoing labour concerns.

Marshall has also pointed to the commercial context as a pressure point. GTA 6 reportedly generated over $3 billion in pre-order sales before a single copy shipped. “Rockstar bosses can easily afford to sit around the table with the people whose hard work created these games and give them a meaningful voice in their workplace,” he said.

    Rockstar’s Position

Rockstar’s public stance hasn’t shifted substantially. The studio maintains that the October 2025 firings were for gross misconduct only, and that it was unaware of which employees were union members at the time. It has also stated — in somewhat general terms — that it respects workers’ trade union rights. Marshall’s response to that in the IWGB’s June 30 recognition request statement was pointed: “Rockstar has maintained that it respects workers’ trade union rights. This is now an opportunity for it to demonstrate that in practice.”

The September employment tribunal will be a significant moment regardless of what happens with the recognition bid. The IWGB is seeking reinstatement of the dismissed workers, back pay, and formal recognition — all three simultaneously. If the tribunal rules against Rockstar on the dismissals, the political and legal pressure around the recognition question will intensify considerably, all of it playing out in the weeks immediately before GTA 6 launches.
