Silent Hill: Townfall Update Will Fix The Weight — Screen Burn Addresses Most Hated Enemy

    By Khalifa Md · October 1, 2026 · 7 min read
    Silent Hill Townfall review
    • Screen Burn has confirmed a balance fix is coming for The Weight, Silent Hill: Townfall’s most controversial enemy, after widespread player backlash.
    • The Weight is effectively unkillable during most encounters, instantly killing protagonist Simon Ordell and staying near the spot where players die — burning their revival resources.
    • Patch 1.3.3 was deployed on September 30 to address PSO compilation stuttering bugs on PC.
    • PC players on AMD GPUs are facing crashes, with Screen Burn advising players to disable ray tracing while a permanent fix is worked out with AMD.
    • Despite the criticism, Silent Hill: Townfall holds a strong 81 on Metacritic and positive reviews for its atmosphere, story, and first-person horror.

Silent Hill: Townfall has only been out for a handful of days, but it has already generated a storm of feedback — and not all of it is about jump scares. Developer Screen Burn has confirmed that a balance adjustment is coming for one of the game’s most controversial design choices: a recurring stalker enemy called The Weight. At the same time, the studio has been scrambling to address PC performance problems that have soured the experience for a chunk of the player base.

What Is The Weight, and Why Are Players So Frustrated?

The Weight is a hulking, tumor-covered creature that appears throughout Silent Hill: Townfall’s fictional Scottish town of St. Amelia. Described officially as being coated in pustules and extremely sensitive to player movement, it functions as a stalker enemy — patrolling areas, hunting protagonist Simon Ordell, and refusing to die no matter what you throw at it during normal encounters. The comparison to Resident Evil’s Mr. X is obvious, but players and critics alike have pointed out that The Weight is a far more erratic and punishing version of that concept.

The core problem is not just that it is difficult to avoid — it is the way the enemy interacts with the game’s revival system. Silent Hill: Townfall lets players craft IV Bags using scavenged materials, which revive Simon on the spot after death rather than sending you back to your last save. Sounds fair, right? Except players are reporting that The Weight frequently lingers in the exact location where it killed you. Come back to life and the creature is still standing right there, killing you again instantly, draining your hard-earned revival resources in the process.

Critics were not shy about calling this out either. Review roundups noted that The Weight was the single most commonly flagged issue across outlets, with some reviewers pointing out that the enemy’s hyper-aggressive, unpredictable movement strips away the slow-burn dread that stalker mechanics are supposed to create — replacing it with flat-out aggravation. Its design clearly draws inspiration from survival horror’s best stalker enemies, but without the deliberate, readable pacing that makes those encounters work.

Screen Burn Responds: A Fix Is on the Way

To their credit, Screen Burn wasted no time acknowledging the backlash. In a social media statement, the studio addressed player concerns directly, writing “We’ve heard you on struggles with The Weight” and promising that an adjustment is coming as soon as possible. No specific release window has been given for the patch, but the fact that Screen Burn moved quickly to acknowledge it publicly suggests the fix is being treated as a priority rather than something to slot into a distant future update.

What shape the fix will actually take remains unknown. It could mean toning down The Weight’s movement speed, adjusting its detection radius, changing how it behaves after a player death, or some combination of all three. The goal, presumably, is to land it somewhere closer to a legitimate tension-builder rather than a progress-blocker that punishes players for trying to use the game’s own mechanics.

Patch 1.3.3 and the PC Performance Headache

While the The Weight situation has dominated community discussions on the gameplay side, PC players have had a separate set of frustrations to deal with. Screen Burn confirmed the launch of Patch 1.3.3 on September 30, which targets stuttering caused by PSO (Pipeline State Object) compilation issues — a notorious Unreal Engine 5 problem that forces shaders to compile during gameplay rather than in a pre-load phase, producing noticeable frame drops and hitches.

Silent Hill: Townfall is built on Unreal Engine 5, the same engine behind the Silent Hill 2 Remake, which launched with similar stuttering complaints back in 2024. The technical DNA of these games means shader compilation problems are almost baked in, and Screen Burn is now working through the same growing pains that have plagued other major UE5 releases.

Beyond stuttering, a subset of PC players — particularly those running AMD graphics cards — have reported the game crashing outright. Screen Burn has acknowledged the issue, attributing it to specific AMD GPU configurations, and is working directly with AMD to develop a proper fix. In the meantime, the studio has advised affected players to switch off ray tracing to stabilize performance. It is not a permanent solution, but it may be enough to get through the game without repeated crashes while the two companies sort out a patch.

Despite landing at “Mixed” on Steam at launch, Silent Hill: Townfall has climbed into Steam’s top seller charts, suggesting the underlying interest in the game is high — and that many of the negative reviews are performance-driven rather than a rejection of the game itself.

The Bigger Picture: A Strong Game With Rough Edges

Strip away The Weight controversy and the PC performance noise, and Silent Hill: Townfall is, by most accounts, a genuinely strong horror game. It sits at an 81 on Metacritic, which places it slightly below Silent Hill f’s 86 and the Silent Hill 2 Remake’s 87 — a credible score for a brand-new entry with a new developer at the helm. Critics have praised the game’s immaculate atmosphere, its first-person perspective (a series first for a full-length mainline entry), and its ability to make the fictional Scottish town of St. Amelia feel as oppressive and real as Silent Hill itself ever did.

The first-person format is one of Silent Hill: Townfall’s most discussed elements. Screen Burn leaned hard into it, using the perspective to make every hallway and fogbound street feel genuinely threatening. The CRTV radio mechanic — which lets players scan for enemies through walls the same way the classic radio static warned of nearby monsters — is a clever nod to the series’ roots while adding something new to the toolkit. It is the kind of design thinking that shows Screen Burn understood the assignment, even if The Weight’s balance needs another pass.

The game also marks the third consecutive autumn in which Konami has launched a major Silent Hill title. After the Silent Hill 2 Remake in 2024 and Silent Hill f in 2025, Townfall keeps the momentum going and continues Konami’s goal of reestablishing the franchise as one of horror gaming’s premier names. Series producer Motoi Okamoto had publicly expressed confidence that Townfall could match the critical reception of both predecessors — and while the current score suggests it is slightly shy of that bar, it is not far off.

For players currently grinding through St. Amelia, the advice for now is straightforward: be patient with The Weight, keep moving rather than staying pinned in one spot, and disable ray tracing if you are on PC and experiencing crashes. The patch for The Weight’s balance, whenever it drops, should make those mid-game stalker sequences feel far less punishing — and hopefully more like the tense, suffocating dread the developers clearly intended. You can also check out how World of Warcraft handles its toughest encounters if you want to see how developers typically balance high-difficulty enemies, and if you are looking for other titles to watch while waiting on Townfall fixes, Dungeon Crawler Carl’s RPG is shipping to backers this October 2026.
