TL;DR
- Rivalry Head-to-Head races are 1v1 duels unlocked by repeatedly placing sidebets against the same racer.
- Sidebets become available in Act 2 of the Campaign via the Challenges menu.
- Bet against the same racer every race on a planet — splitting bets across multiple pilots delays or blocks the rivalry from forming.
- After enough sidebets, your target confronts you in the paddock, then challenges you to a Head-to-Head one or two planets later.
- Win and you gain a Galactic League Token. Lose and you forfeit one.
- There are 11 rivals total. Beating all of them unlocks the Best of the Best trophy/achievement.
- Five rivals also unlock permanent Favors when beaten — powerful run bonuses you keep for future Tours.
- Kestar Bool cannot become a rival and does not count toward the 11.
Rivalry Head-to-Head races are some of the most satisfying moments in Star Wars Galactic Racer. They feel personal. Someone has had enough of you betting against them and wants to settle it on the track — just the two of you, one League Token on the line. But triggering these duels takes a bit of understanding, and winning them takes preparation. This guide covers everything: how the sidebet system works, how to trigger a rivalry, all 11 rivals and their rewards, and how to win the race itself.

What Is a Rivalry Head-to-Head Race?
A Rivalry Head-to-Head is a private one-on-one race between Shade and another racer in the Galactic League. It is triggered through the sidebet system and plays out as a standalone event, separate from the regular Tour structure.
The stakes are real. Win and you receive an extra Galactic League Token — essentially an extra life that keeps your Tour alive longer. Lose and the rival takes one of yours. If you are running low on tokens, losing a Head-to-Head can end your Tour early.
Beyond the token, beating five specific rivals also permanently unlocks a Favor — a passive run bonus you can equip at the start of future Tours. These are some of the best Favors in the game, so the Head-to-Head system is worth pursuing even beyond the trophy.
How to Unlock Rivalry Head-to-Head Races
Step 1 — Reach Act 2
Sidebets are not available from the start of the game. You need to complete Act 1 and progress into Act 2 of the Campaign before the sidebet feature appears in the Challenges menu prior to each event. Until then, Head-to-Head rivalries cannot be triggered.
Step 2 — Place Sidebets Against the Same Racer
Once you are in Act 2, open the Challenges menu before a Race or Eliminator event. You will see a list of other racers on the grid along with credits you can wager on finishing ahead of them.
The key rule: pick one specific racer and bet against them on every event on your current planet. This is the only way to build the rivalry meter. If you spread bets across multiple pilots, the meter does not progress and the rivalry will not form. Focus all your sidebets on a single target, and beat them in the race to make those bets count.
Step 3 — Wait for the Confrontation
After enough consistent sidebets and wins against your chosen target on a planet, they will approach you in the paddock at the start of the next planet. This is a brief dialogue moment where they make it clear they are not happy with your repeated betting against them. From this point, your rival is marked with a red Rivalry icon next to their name in the sidebet menu.
Step 4 — Keep Betting, Then Accept the Challenge
Continue placing sidebets against your marked rival on the next planet. One to two planets after the initial confrontation, they will approach you again and officially challenge you to a Rivalry Head-to-Head race. At that point, you speak with them in the paddock to trigger the one-on-one duel.
If a rival you want is not showing up in the sidebet list during a particular event, it may be worth restarting the Tour. The available sidebets have some RNG involved in which racers appear. Some players restart at the first planet until they see the rival they want available to bet against.
All 11 Rivals in Star Wars Galactic Racer
There are 11 racers who can become rivals and be challenged to a Head-to-Head. Kestar Bool is not on this list — you cannot trigger a sidebet-based rivalry with him. Below is every rival and what you earn for beating them.
- Katja Mox — League Token reward only
- Griff Halloran — Unlocks the Victorious Loser Favor
- Ary Quill — Unlocks the Family Legacy Favor
- Soren Zaks — League Token reward only
- Nik Skandaro — League Token reward only
- Goli & 02-R0 — League Token reward only
- Fola Kanjen — Unlocks the High Roller Favor
- Sen Fira — Unlocks the Silent Defiance Favor
- Biddy Blas — League Token reward only
- Malis Vazosk — League Token reward only
- Lyren Shok — Unlocks the Fan Club Favor
Beating all 11 in Head-to-Head races unlocks the Best of the Best Silver trophy on PlayStation and Achievement on PC/Xbox. You do not need to do all 11 in a single Tour — progress carries across runs. Aim to tackle one rivalry per Tour so each run also moves your completion forward on other goals.
Favor Rewards from Rivalry Head-to-Heads
Five of the 11 rivals unlock a permanent Favor when beaten. These Favors are worth understanding because they change how future Tours play out.
- Fan Club (beat Lyren Shok) — Top-three finishes have a 20% chance of granting a bonus +3 Upgrade Pack at Rank 3. Very strong for building momentum during a Tour.
- Victorious Loser (beat Griff Halloran) — Earn 50% increased Credit rewards when finishing in the bottom nine. Makes failed races far less painful economically.
- Silent Defiance (beat Sen Fira) — 50% chance of a bonus Part Pack per event, with raised Part rarity. Excellent for getting rare upgrades.
- Family Legacy (beat Ary Quill) — Earn 600 Credits per Takedown on your Rival, 1,200 on Kestar Bool. Strong if you play aggressively.
- High Roller (beat Fola Kanjen) — 100% more Credits from successful sidebets at Rank 3. Stacks powerfully with an active sidebet strategy.

How to Win a Rivalry Head-to-Head Race
The Head-to-Head race itself is a straightforward 1v1. You and your rival race the same track, and whoever crosses the finish line first wins. There are no other racers to worry about — just you and them.
The race plays out similarly to the Sebulba duel at the end of Act 1. A clean, well-upgraded vehicle and smart ability use is usually enough to handle it. Here is what actually makes the difference:
Have a Well-Upgraded Vehicle
If you have been spending your Tuning Points consistently across Tours, your vehicle should be strong enough to outrun any individual rival. The race itself is rarely the hard part — the triggering process is what trips people up. Make sure your Cornering, Afterburner, Resilience, and Ramjet stats are all in reasonable shape before accepting a challenge.
For more on how to build your vehicle properly, see our guides on how to upgrade abilities, all abilities in the game, and how to reset tuning points.
Use Disruptive Abilities
Since it is a 1v1 race, disruptive abilities that slow or damage a single target are especially effective. Ion Bolt, Concussion Mine, and Shockwave all induce malfunctions or slow your rival long enough to build a gap. Equip at least one of these going into the duel.
Check out all the options in our Star Wars Galactic Racer all abilities guide.
Do Not Overheat Your Ramjet
It is tempting to push the Ramjet hard in a 1v1 because you want to pull ahead immediately. But an overheat means lost speed and disabled abilities — exactly when you can least afford it. Run the Ramjet on long straights with room to cool before technical sections, and let your driving line do the heavy lifting through corners.
Use Shortcuts
Rivals in Head-to-Head races know the track and will use efficient lines. If a shortcut exists on the route, take it. This is one of the fastest ways to open or extend a gap on a single opponent who cannot react as freely as a full field would.
Play on Cadet Difficulty If Needed
The Head-to-Head race itself is winnable on any difficulty setting, but if you are struggling, lowering the difficulty to Cadet for the duel is a completely valid approach. There is no trophy tied to winning on a specific difficulty, so use the tools available to you.
Tips for Completing All 11 Rivalries
- One rival per Tour. Do not try to rush two or three rivalries in a single run. Focus your sidebets on one target per Tour to trigger and complete their Head-to-Head cleanly. This keeps your sidebet credits focused and gives each rivalry room to develop.
- Reset Tours if the right rival is not available. The sidebets available at the start of an event have some RNG. If the racer you need to build a rivalry with is not listed, restarting the Tour at the first planet is a valid time-saving move rather than waiting through a whole Tour for them to appear.
- Beat them in the race, not just the sidebet. The sidebet is about finishing ahead of your target. But you also need to actually beat them in the race overall to make the rivalry progress. Finishing ahead of your rival on a sidebet while losing the race to someone else still counts — you just need to cross the line before your specific target.
- Keep sidebets consistent across the planet. Betting against your target on two events out of four and then switching to another pilot on the remaining two will slow or stop the rivalry from forming. Every available event on that planet should have a sidebet on the same person.
- Watch your League Tokens before accepting. A Head-to-Head puts a token on the line. If you are down to one or two tokens in a Tour you care about completing, consider whether the risk is worth it. You can always come back to that rivalry in a future Tour.

Sidebets and Rivalries — How They Connect
Sidebets are not just a money mechanic. They are the engine that drives the entire rivalry system. Every sidebet you win against a specific pilot builds toward that pilot becoming your rival. This also means sidebets have two separate values running in parallel — Credits now, and potential Favor unlocks later.
A few important notes about sidebets in relation to rivalries:
- Winning your first sidebet against your current rival unlocks the Beginner’s Luck trophy.
- Winning a sidebet against Kestar Bool unlocks the Gathii vs. Bool trophy. He cannot become a rival through the Head-to-Head system, but you can still bet against him in regular races.
- Winning 10 sidebets total unlocks the I’ll Take That Bet bronze trophy. This happens naturally if you are consistently betting each race.
- The High Roller Favor (unlocked by beating Fola Kanjen in a Head-to-Head) doubles your Credit rewards from successful sidebets at Rank 3. This makes it one of the most valuable Favors for long-term resource generation.
The bottom line: always place a sidebet every race in Act 2 onward. There is almost never a good reason not to. The Credits are useful, the rivalry progress is essential, and the Favor unlocks are permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do Rivalry Head-to-Head races unlock?
They unlock in Act 2 of the Campaign, when the sidebet feature becomes available in the Challenges menu before events. You cannot trigger a rivalry before reaching Act 2.
How many times do I need to bet against a racer to trigger a rivalry?
You need to place sidebets against the same racer across multiple events on a single planet, and beat them in those races. The exact number is not fixed, but betting against them on every available event during a planet is the consistent approach. Spreading bets across multiple pilots stops the rivalry from forming.
Can Kestar Bool become a rival?
No. Kestar Bool cannot become a rival through the Head-to-Head system. He does not count toward the 11 required for the Best of the Best trophy. You can still place sidebets against him in regular races for the Gathii vs. Bool achievement.
What happens if I lose a Rivalry Head-to-Head?
You lose a Galactic League Token. The rival keeps their Favor locked, and you will need to trigger the rivalry again in a future Tour if you still want to beat them. Be careful about accepting a Head-to-Head challenge when you are already low on tokens.
Do I need to beat all 11 rivals in a single Tour?
No. Progress toward the Best of the Best trophy carries across Tours. You can beat one rival per Tour and spread the full 11 across many runs. This is actually the recommended approach since focusing on one rivalry per Tour is more reliable than trying to rush multiple in a single run.
Which rivals unlock Favors?
Five rivals unlock Favors when beaten: Lyren Shok (Fan Club), Griff Halloran (Victorious Loser), Sen Fira (Silent Defiance), Ary Quill (Family Legacy), and Fola Kanjen (High Roller). The other six rivals reward only the League Token from winning the Head-to-Head.
Can I customize my character and vehicle before a Head-to-Head race?
You can customize your vehicle through the normal upgrade and tuning systems during a Tour. Character cosmetic changes are made at the start of a Tour — see our full guide on how to customize characters in Star Wars Galactic Racer. Neither character customization nor vehicle liveries affect race performance in the duel.
What abilities work best in a 1v1 Head-to-Head?
Disruptive abilities aimed at a single target are most effective — specifically Ion Bolt, Concussion Mine, and Shockwave. These trigger malfunctions or slow your rival long enough to build a lead. In a full field race you might spread your abilities differently, but in a 1v1 every disruptive hit directly helps your position.
