Twitch Crashed During the GTA 6 Extended Look — Here’s What Happened

If you were trying to watch the GTA 6 Extended Look through a Twitch stream last night and everything suddenly stopped working — you weren’t alone, and you weren’t imagining it. Twitch suffered a significant platform-wide outage during one of the biggest gaming events of the year, taking down web, chat, and video functionality for thousands of users at almost exactly the moment they needed it most.

The outage has since been largely resolved, but the story of how it happened and just how massive the traffic spike was tells you everything you need to know about the cultural weight that GTA 6 carries right now.

    What Happened — The Timeline

Rockstar’s 26-minute GTA 6 Extended Look premiered exclusively on Netflix at 3:00 PM EDT on August 27. The footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5 and covered gameplay, both protagonists Jason and Lucia, the state of Leonida, and more. It was a timed exclusive — Rockstar gave Netflix a 6-hour window before releasing the same footage free on YouTube and the official GTA 6 website.

That timed exclusivity is important context, because it meant anyone who didn’t have a Netflix subscription had two options: wait six hours, or find a streamer reacting to it live on Twitch. A huge number of people chose the latter.

Around 4:00 PM EDT — roughly an hour after the Extended Look went live — Twitch formally acknowledged a major outage. Independent reports of problems had already been flooding in before that, with users complaining about channels failing to load and other parts of the platform becoming inaccessible. Downdetector.com spiked to over 17,000 users reporting problems with Twitch’s website, app, and servers simultaneously.

The Twitch Status page confirmed outages across three major systems: web, chat, and video. The experience on the ground was exactly as bad as that sounds — the Twitch homepage threw up a generic error message, individual stream pages loaded but displayed permanent black screens, and for a period the only thing still functioning was chat, which created the surreal experience of thousands of people talking about a stream they couldn’t actually watch.

By 4:45 PM EDT, both Kai Cenat’s and IShowSpeed’s livestreams and profiles were completely unavailable — two of the biggest names on the platform, gone dark at the peak moment. Around 30 minutes after the initial crash, Twitch pages started to intermittently load again, though the status page continued to report major outages across core systems for some time after.

The Numbers That Explain Why This Happened

Here’s the part that puts the outage in context. According to live coverage of the event, Twitch streamers covering the GTA 6 Extended Look had a combined 881,000 concurrent viewers less than 10 minutes before the Extended Look even began. That’s the pre-show audience. Viewers were already sitting inside streams waiting for the moment the footage dropped.

Major creators streaming the event included IShowSpeed, Kai Cenat, Rubius, IlloJuan, TGG, and Asmongold, among others. Kai Cenat alone typically draws around 75,000 concurrent viewers on an average month. When he and every other major gaming creator are all pulling simultaneous peak audiences for the same event, the numbers stack up fast.

Twitch had clearly anticipated some of this — the platform set up a dedicated GTA VI category ahead of the event specifically to support creators covering it, signalling the company knew heavy engagement was coming. But the actual traffic surge appears to have exceeded whatever infrastructure headroom they’d prepared for.

Netflix itself also briefly went down at the moment the Extended Look dropped, as the flood of people trying to log in simultaneously overwhelmed even that platform’s infrastructure. IShowSpeed’s reaction to finding Netflix crashed right as he was trying to pull it up — “How are y’all not ready…” — summed up the frustration of a lot of people in real time. For Netflix, the fix was relatively quick. For Twitch, the outage lingered longer and hit harder.

    Has Twitch Confirmed the Cause?

Not officially. Twitch’s statement on the matter has been fairly standard: “We have received reports of impacted services. This could manifest in chat not working, login difficulties, search impaired, etc. We’re looking into the issue.” The company has not explicitly stated that the GTA 6 Extended Look traffic caused the outage.

That said, the timing is about as clear as it gets. 881,000 combined viewers before the stream even started. The outage beginning roughly an hour into one of the most-watched gaming events in recent memory. Both of the platform’s biggest stars simultaneously going dark. Twitch doesn’t need to say it — the numbers say it for them.

It’s also worth noting that other major gaming events were happening concurrently, including coverage of Path of Exile 2, which added additional traffic pressure to the platform on top of the GTA 6 wave. The outage likely wasn’t caused by a single stream — it was the combined weight of an unusually loaded Thursday evening for gaming content.

What This Says About GTA 6’s Cultural Pull

The Twitch outage is genuinely interesting as a data point, because it wasn’t caused by the game launching. It wasn’t a playable demo. It wasn’t even a traditional trailer. It was a 26-minute gameplay presentation about a game that doesn’t release until November 19, 2026 — and it drew enough simultaneous viewers to stress one of the most heavily trafficked live-streaming platforms on the internet.

For context: the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 showcase in August 2024 drew over 800,000 concurrent viewers across YouTube Live and Twitch combined. GTA 6 was approaching that number on Twitch alone before the content even started. That’s the scale of interest we’re talking about.

The gaming audience has been waiting for GTA 6 since GTA 5 launched in September 2013 — a 13-year gap between mainline entries. Every piece of content Rockstar releases carries that accumulated anticipation behind it. When that finally breaks into a proper extended gameplay reveal, of course it’s going to break the internet a little bit.

What About the Extended Look Itself?

If you missed the whole thing due to the outage, the footage is now freely available on YouTube and the official GTA 6 website since the 6-hour Netflix exclusivity window has passed. You won’t need to find a Twitch stream to watch it, and you definitely won’t risk hitting a black screen mid-reveal.

The Extended Look confirmed a staggering amount of new information about the game — the full state of Leonida, the dual-protagonist setup with Jason and Lucia, the revamped Wanted system with criminal profiling, more realistic driving and car-jacking mechanics, a relationship system, and the 80-hour main story that Rockstar head of development Rob Nelson mentioned to The New York Times. For the full breakdown of everything confirmed, we covered all the details on the GTA 6 map size, story length, and new gameplay systems here.

For now, Twitch is back up and running, GTA 6 streams are active, and the platform appears to have stabilised. It was a rough hour for anyone who was trying to watch the reveal without a Netflix subscription, but the content is now accessible to everyone — and there’s still three months to keep watching the hype build before November 19 finally arrives.

It’s been a wild week for gaming news all around. Ubisoft released Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on Steam without the actual game, LEGO finally revealed proper Super Mario Minifigure sets for January 2027, and the RPM Red Ranger just joined Power Rangers: Legacy Wars today. Gaming doesn’t really slow down, does it.
