For a long time, Until Dawn 2 felt like one of those games that fans talked about constantly but never actually came close to existing. The original game wrapped up in a way that didn’t scream “sequel,” Supermassive moved on to The Dark Pictures Anthology, and years rolled by without a peep. Then PlayStation’s State of Play on June 2, 2026 happened — and there it was. Until Dawn 2, confirmed, officially announced, with a trailer that reminded everyone exactly why people fell in love with the first game in the first place. It’s coming to PS5 in 2027, and yes, things are already looking gloriously grim for its new cast.

Until Dawn 2 Release Date and Platform

Until Dawn 2 is confirmed as a PS5 exclusive, launching sometime in 2027. No specific release date has been given beyond the year, but Sony has confirmed it’s far enough along that they were comfortable revealing it at a major showcase event. Players can already wishlist it now on the PlayStation Store. More details on timing are expected in the months ahead alongside gameplay reveals and additional cast introductions.

It was announced as part of a massive State of Play showing that also brought us the reveal of God of War Laufey — making the June 2 showcase one of PlayStation’s strongest in years.

Who Is Developing Until Dawn 2?

This is the part that’s going to raise eyebrows for fans of the original, and understandably so. Supermassive Games — the studio that created Until Dawn and went on to build The Dark Pictures Anthology off that same DNA — is not involved in the sequel. That’s a pretty significant change when the developer and the series were so tightly associated with each other.

Instead, PlayStation first-party studio Firesprite is handling development. The Liverpool-based team is best known for Horizon: Call of the Mountain, the PSVR2 launch title they built in collaboration with Guerrilla Games. That’s a very different kind of project to an interactive horror game built around narrative branching and ensemble casts, which is part of why some fans have approached this news with cautious optimism rather than outright excitement.

That said, Firesprite has spoken publicly about how much of the team are genuine fans of the original Until Dawn, and they’ve made clear their goal is to preserve what made that game work — the character drama, the pressure-filled decisions, and the moments of genuine horror that stuck with players years later. Whether they pull it off is the big question, and we won’t really know until we see more gameplay. But the passion sounds real, and the production values in the trailer look strong.

The Story: Ghost Hunters, A Haunted Island, and Very Bad Decisions

Until Dawn 2 is a standalone experience — you don’t need to have played the original to jump in, and it features an entirely new cast in an entirely new location. The premise is honestly inspired. The main characters are the crew behind Dead True, a wildly popular paranormal YouTube channel. The catch? Every single scare they’ve ever put out has been completely staged. They’ve never seen a ghost, a monster, or anything remotely supernatural. They’re just really good at faking it for views.

Their luck runs out when they’re sent to a remote, abandoned island for their next viral hit — and it turns out the island is very much haunted. What starts as another staged ghost hunt turns into a genuine fight for survival, with a machete-wielding killer thrown in for good measure. The premise plays directly into the social media age in a way the 2015 original couldn’t have, and it gives the game a layer of dark irony that immediately sets it apart.

PlayStation’s official description nails the tone pretty well: the crew’s only real supernatural experience has always been whatever they could manufacture for engagement, and now they’re being hunted by something they have absolutely no framework for dealing with.

The Butterfly Effect Is Back — And Relationships Matter More Than Ever

The original Until Dawn built its reputation on the Butterfly Effect mechanic — the idea that seemingly small, throwaway decisions could have massive consequences dozens of chapters later. Miss picking up a clue early on and a character dies much later because of it. Walk down the wrong path at the wrong moment and everything unravels. Until Dawn 2 brings all of that back, and based on what’s been described so far, it’s going deeper.

Where the original largely tied outcomes to big dramatic choices, Until Dawn 2 is building relationship dynamics into the branching system more heavily than before. The state of trust, tension, or chemistry between characters will influence which paths open up and which ones close off. So it’s not just about the cliff-edge decisions — how you play smaller character moments can set off a chain reaction that shapes everything that comes later.

The trailer’s closing line makes the stakes crystal clear: “Everyone can live. Everyone can die.” That’s the Until Dawn promise, and it’s good to hear it’s still front and center. How you handle the crew of Dead True is entirely in your hands, and the game will hold you fully accountable for whatever happens to them.

The Cast: Neil Newbon, Dacre Montgomery, and Peter Stormare Returns

The reveal trailer gave us our first look at some of the faces behind Until Dawn 2’s new cast, and there are some genuinely exciting names in the mix.

Neil Newbon — probably best known right now as Astarion from Baldur’s Gate 3, a role that earned him legions of new fans — appears as one of the main characters. He’s got natural charisma and a gift for playing morally complex, watchable characters, which makes him a great fit for the Until Dawn universe. Dacre Montgomery, recognizable to most people as Billy Hargrove from Stranger Things, is also part of the cast. Both of these actors have experience in projects where intensity and emotional range matter, which bodes well.

Then there’s the familiar face that will mean the most to long-time fans. Peter Stormare is back as Dr. Alan J. Hill — the unsettling psychiatrist who framed the entire original game through his therapy sessions. His presence at the end of the reveal trailer is a clear signal that Until Dawn 2 exists in the same universe as the first game, even if it’s not a direct continuation of that story. Dr. Hill was genuinely one of the most unnerving parts of Until Dawn, so having Stormare back is a big deal.

Firesprite has confirmed that more cast members will be formally introduced in the months leading up to launch, so the full ensemble is still being revealed piece by piece.

How Until Dawn 2 Connects to the Original Game

While Until Dawn 2 is built as a standalone story that new players can walk into without any prior knowledge, it’s clearly not ignoring the events of the first game. Dr. Hill’s appearance at the trailer’s conclusion is the most obvious thread — he exists in the same continuity, which raises questions about what his role in the sequel will be and how much of the original game’s lore carries over.

Beyond that, the Butterfly Effect mechanic and the general tone and structure of Until Dawn 2 are consistent with what Supermassive established in 2015. Firesprite has described its core mission as honoring that DNA rather than reinventing it. So fans of the original should find the sequel immediately familiar in terms of how it plays and feels, even though the characters, setting, and specific threats are all new.

If you’ve been sitting on the fence about revisiting the original game before the sequel arrives, now’s probably a good time to think about it. And while you’re catching up on gaming news from the State of Play, check out what we know about Rayman Legends Retold — another major announcement from the same showcase that’s generating a lot of excitement.

Is Firesprite the Right Studio for This?

Let’s be honest about this, because fans deserve an honest take. The question of whether Firesprite can actually deliver what Until Dawn is known for is a legitimate one. Horizon: Call of the Mountain was a technically impressive VR game, but it was an action adventure built around PlayStation VR2 — a very different design challenge to a slow-burn narrative horror game where the writing, pacing, and character work have to carry the entire experience.

What’s encouraging is everything we know about how Firesprite has approached this project. They’ve clearly been given proper resources and time — a 2027 release window suggests they’re not rushing it out. The trailer production values look polished. The casting choices are strong. And the decision to retain Peter Stormare and connect the universe to the original suggests someone at the studio level genuinely cares about the franchise’s identity.

What’ll matter most in the end is the writing, the pacing of horror beats, and whether the Butterfly Effect system has enough complexity to reward replay. Those things we simply can’t judge from a reveal trailer alone. But the foundation looks solid enough to be cautiously optimistic heading into 2027.
