- Three biomes covered: Meadows, Black Forest, and Swamp — the first major progression arc in Valheim 1.0.
- The Meadows teach you survival. The Black Forest gives you metal. The Swamp tests everything you have learned.
- Boss order: Eikthyr (Meadows) → The Elder (Black Forest) → Bonemass (Swamp).
- Defeat Eikthyr to unlock the Antler Pickaxe. Defeat The Elder to unlock the Swamp Key. Defeat Bonemass to unlock the Wishbone for silver in the Mountains.
- Portals cannot carry metals. Sail ore home or smelt it near the mine.
- Poison Resistance Mead is not optional in the Swamp. Brew it before you go.
- After the Swamp, you are ready for the Mountains. Read our full Valheim 1.0 review to see what the full journey looks like.
Valheim 1.0 Meadows to Swamp is the opening chapter of one of the best survival games ever made. These first three biomes take you from a confused Viking with nothing but your fists to an iron-armored warrior ready for everything the world throws at you. But only if you follow the progression correctly.
This guide covers everything you need to move from the Meadows through the Black Forest and into the Swamp — resources, enemies, bosses, gear, and the mistakes that trip up most new players. New to Valheim entirely? Start with our Valheim 1.0 Beginner’s Guide first, then come back here.
The Biome Progression Loop
Before diving into each biome, it helps to understand how Valheim’s progression works. Every biome follows the same rhythm:
- Enter the biome and gather its signature resources.
- Craft the next tier of gear using those resources.
- Find the boss altar, prepare properly, and defeat the boss.
- Use the boss drop to unlock the next stage.
- Move to the next biome.
Understand that loop and the whole game clicks. Skip a step and the next biome will punish you hard.
Biome 1: The Meadows
The Meadows is where every player starts. It is lush, calm, and relatively safe — but do not treat it as a throwaway tutorial zone. The decisions you make here set the foundation for everything that follows.
Meadows Enemies
The Meadows has the weakest enemies in the game, but they still teach you important combat habits:
- Boars — will attack if you get too close. Drop Leather Scraps and Raw Meat. Can also be tamed for a food source.
- Deer — peaceful and skittish. Use a bow to hunt them. Drop Deer Hide and Raw Meat, and crucially the Deer Trophies you need to summon the first boss.
- Necks — small four-eyed water lizards near rivers and coastlines. Drop Neck Tails, which are used in Poison Resistance Mead later.
- Greylings — weak creatures that drop Resin. Easy to kill, good for early practice.
Meadows Resources
Pick up everything you see on the ground:
- Wood — from branches on the ground or by chopping Beech trees with a Stone Axe.
- Stone — scattered everywhere.
- Flint — found along shorelines and riverbanks. Needed for your first weapon upgrades.
- Raspberries and Mushrooms — your first food. Eat them as soon as you pick them up to raise your health and stamina.
- Leather Scraps and Deer Hide — from hunting Boars and Deer. Used to craft Leather Armor.
- Resin and Feathers — from chopping Beech trees and killing Greylings. Used for torches and arrows.
What to Build in the Meadows
Your immediate goals in the Meadows are simple. Build a Workbench, put a small shelter around it with a roof, place a Campfire inside with a smoke hole, craft a Bed and claim it, and sit near the fire to get the Rested buff. That is your base — functional and enough to start.
Once you have that sorted, build these in order:
- Stone Axe — your first tool. Chop trees and use as an early weapon.
- Club — basic melee weapon, effective on early enemies.
- Crude Bow and Wood Arrows — for hunting deer at range.
- Leather Armor set (Helmet, Chest, Legs) — crafted from Deer Hide and Leather Scraps. A big early upgrade.
- Flint Axe and Flint Knife — stronger than the Stone Axe for chopping and fighting.
- Cooking Station — placed over a Campfire. Cook Raw Meat for significantly better food than raw berries.
Do not rush to the boss before you have Leather Armor, cooked food, and the Rested buff active. Gear up first.
Boss 1: Eikthyr
Eikthyr is a massive electrified stag. He is the first Forsaken boss and lives in the Meadows.
How to find Eikthyr: Interact with the Vegvisir runestone at the Sacrificial Stones where you spawned. This marks Eikthyr’s altar on your map.
How to summon Eikthyr: Hunt Deer and collect two Deer Trophies. Place them in your hotbar, approach the stone altar, and use them to make the offering. Eikthyr will appear.
Eikthyr’s attacks:
- Lightning bolt — fired from his antlers in a straight line.
- Stomp — a close-range AoE ground slam.
- Electric shockwave — a sweeping antler attack.
How to beat Eikthyr: Bring cooked food, the Rested buff, your Leather Armor, and a wooden shield. Block his attacks and hit back between his swings. He is not very fast and his attacks are readable. Stay mobile and do not let him corner you. A Flint Knife or Crude Bow with Flint Arrows both work well. The fight takes two to five minutes if you are prepared.
Eikthyr drops: Hard Antlers (x3) and Eikthyr’s Trophy. The Hard Antlers unlock the recipe for the Antler Pickaxe — the first tool that lets you mine ore. This is the key to everything that comes next. Mount the trophy on the Sacrificial Stones to unlock Eikthyr’s Forsaken Power, which reduces stamina drain from running and jumping for five minutes.
After Eikthyr — What to Do Next
Craft the Antler Pickaxe immediately after the fight. This is your ticket into the Bronze Age. Without it, you cannot mine Copper or Tin in the Black Forest, and without those metals, you cannot progress. Also build a Cauldron over a Campfire — this unlocks new food recipes and eventually Poison Resistance Mead for the Swamp.
Biome 2: The Black Forest
Cross the border from the Meadows into the Black Forest and you feel the shift instantly. The trees close in, the light drops, and you hear Greydwarfs grunting before you see them. This biome is where Valheim truly begins. Your entire goal here is to enter the Bronze Age.
Black Forest Enemies
- Greydwarfs — swarm in groups, especially at night. Individually weak, dangerous in packs. Drop Stone and Resin.
- Greydwarf Brutes — bigger, hit harder, drop the Ancient Seeds you need to summon The Elder.
- Greydwarf Shamans — cast a poison cloud at close range. Keep your distance. Also drop Ancient Seeds.
- Skeletons — found inside Burial Chambers. Weak to Blunt damage. Hit them with a club or mace, not a blade.
- Trolls — the real danger of the Black Forest. A single Troll can kill an unarmored player in one swing and can destroy your base. If you hear heavy footsteps or snapping trees, a Troll is nearby. Fight in the open where you can dodge, or use a bow from a distance. Never fight one in a corner.
Black Forest Resources
- Copper Ore — found in large mossy boulders with faint bronze-coloured veins. Mine them with your Antler Pickaxe. Deposits extend deep underground — always mine all the way down, not just the surface.
- Tin Ore — found along riverbanks and shorelines inside the Black Forest as small dark shiny rocks. Easy to spot, quick to mine.
- Surtling Cores — found inside Burial Chambers and near geysers. You need these to build your Smelter and Charcoal Kiln. Collect at least 10.
- Core Wood — from Pine and Fir trees. Needed for the Smelter, Kiln, and other crafting.
- Thistle — a glowing blue plant found throughout the Black Forest. Collect every single one you see. You will need large amounts for mid-tier food recipes and Poison Resistance Mead later.
- Ancient Seeds — dropped by Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans, and guaranteed from destroying Greydwarf Spawners. You need three to summon The Elder.
Burial Chambers
Burial Chambers are dungeons scattered through the Black Forest. They look like stone entrances built into hillsides. Go inside. These are your main source of Surtling Cores — you will find them in chests and dropped by enemies inside. They also contain Vegvisir runestones that mark The Elder’s altar on your map. Bring a torch and watch for Skeletons and Ghosts. Hit Skeletons with a blunt weapon — they are highly resistant to slash and pierce damage.
Setting Up Bronze Age Infrastructure
Once you have Surtling Cores, build these back at your base:
- Charcoal Kiln — converts Wood into Coal. Coal is needed to fuel the Smelter.
- Smelter — smelts Copper Ore and Tin Ore into bars using Coal as fuel.
- Forge — built from six Copper bars. This is your new crafting station for all metal items.
Remember: Copper Ore, Tin Ore, and Bronze bars cannot go through portals. You need to smelt near the mine or transport everything by boat or on foot. Plan your ore runs carefully.
Crafting Bronze Gear
At the Forge, combine two Copper and one Tin to make one Bronze bar. This is a 3:1 ratio — you need far more Copper than Tin. Mine copper heavily. Here is the priority order for Bronze crafting:
- Bronze Axe — the most important item. This lets you chop Birch and Oak trees in the Meadows for Fine Wood, which unlocks many new recipes including Portals.
- Portals — build one at your main base and one near your Black Forest operations. Game-changing for movement speed.
- Bronze weapon — Bronze Sword or Bronze Atgeir are both solid choices.
- Bronze Armor set — helmet, chest, and legs. A big upgrade over Leather Armor.
- Finewood Bow — your first serious ranged weapon. Essential for The Elder fight.
Finding the Merchant: Haldor
The Black Forest is also where you find Haldor, the Dwarven merchant. He is marked with a bag icon when you get close. Haldor sells several useful items including the Megingjord belt, which raises your carry weight by 150 — a huge quality-of-life upgrade for ore runs. Visit him early. He also sells the Yule Hat and other cosmetics, plus useful consumables.

Boss 2: The Elder
The Elder is a towering tree-like giant. He is a significant step up from Eikthyr in both size and difficulty.
How to find The Elder: Interact with Vegvisir runestones inside Burial Chambers or ruined stone towers in the Black Forest. These mark his altar on your map.
How to summon The Elder: Collect three Ancient Seeds from Greydwarf Brutes, Greydwarf Shamans, or by destroying Greydwarf Spawners. Place them in your hotbar and use them at the altar fire. The altar reads “Burn their young” — that is the clue.
The Elder’s attacks:
- Root Spawn — summons a ring of roots around you. Do not waste time killing them. Just run out of the ring, they disappear on their own.
- Vine Volley — a long-range spray of stinging vines fired in your direction. Use the stone pillars around the altar as cover.
- Stomp — a ground slam at close range. Dodge sideways or block it with your shield.
How to beat The Elder: The Elder is weak to Fire. This is the key to the whole fight. Craft a Finewood Bow and at least 100 Fire Arrows before the battle. Use the four indestructible stone pillars around the altar as cover. Step out to fire arrows, duck back when he winds up the vine volley. Do not start the fight at night — Greydwarfs and Trolls will join in. Clear the area first. Stay near the altar, because running too far can reset his health.
The Elder drops: The Elder’s Trophy and the Swamp Key. The Swamp Key is what you came for — it opens every Sunken Crypt in the Swamp biome, where all the iron is. Mount the trophy on the Sacrificial Stones to unlock The Elder’s Forsaken Power, which increases your woodcutting speed.
Biome 3: The Swamp
The Swamp is a different kind of challenge. The Meadows teach you survival. The Black Forest teaches you mining and metal. The Swamp teaches you preparation, patience, and what happens when you ignore poison. This is where the Iron Age begins — and where many players hit their first real wall.
Prepare Before You Enter the Swamp
Do not walk into the Swamp underprepared. Unlike the first two biomes, the Swamp will kill you fast if you show up without the right gear. Before you cross the border, have all of these:
- Full Bronze Armor — or at least upgraded Leather Armor.
- Bronze Mace or Stagbreaker — blunt weapons are king in the Swamp. Most enemies here are weak to Blunt damage.
- Swamp Key — from defeating The Elder. You cannot open Sunken Crypts without it.
- Poison Resistance Mead — craft this at your Fermenter before going in. The recipe is 10 Honey, 5 Thistle, 1 Neck Tail, and 10 Coal. This reduces poison damage by 75% for 10 minutes. Drink it before you get poisoned — drinking it after an existing poison status has no effect. Bring multiple.
- Antler Pickaxe — you need it to mine Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts. It works perfectly fine here and repairs at any level 1 Workbench.
- Three cooked foods and the Rested buff active.
Also brew some Stamina Mead and Healing Mead from your Fermenter before going. The Swamp never stops raining, which gives you a Wet debuff that slows stamina regen. Having stamina meads covers that weakness nicely.
Swamp Enemies
- Draugr — undead Viking warriors. Come in melee and ranged varieties. Draugr Archers are particularly dangerous near Sunken Crypt entrances. Hit them with Blunt weapons.
- Draugr Elite — much stronger melee version. Hits hard. Do not take them lightly.
- Blobs — bouncing green slime creatures. Deal Poison damage on contact. Hit them with a blunt weapon and back off quickly. Do not let them stack on you.
- Oozers — larger version of Blobs. When they die, they explode into a poison cloud. Move away when they are low on health.
- Leeches — hide in shallow water and deal Poison damage. Use a bow to pick them off from land before stepping in. Never walk through dark shallow water without checking first.
- Surtlings — fire elementals near geysers. Drop Surtling Cores. Kill them for free crafting materials, but do not engage them in the water — it will make them stronger.
- Wraiths — appear at night in the Swamp. Hard to deal with early on. Do not fight in the Swamp at night until you have Iron gear.
Sunken Crypts — Your Main Goal in the Swamp
Sunken Crypts are the entire reason you are in the Swamp. These are stone dungeons with iron grate doors and green-flamed torches outside. They are your primary source of Scrap Iron, which smelts into Iron bars at your Smelter.
To open a Sunken Crypt, you need the Swamp Key in your inventory. The same key opens every crypt you find — you never need more than one. A smart habit is to unlock every crypt you find on your first pass through an area, even if you do not intend to clear it yet.
Inside the crypts, corridors are blocked by Muddy Scrap Piles. Mine these with your Antler Pickaxe. Each pile yields Scrap Iron plus small amounts of Leather Scraps and Withered Bones. The iron is what you want. The Withered Bones are what you need to summon Bonemass — collect 10 of them.
Draugr and their spawners wait inside the crypts. Clear enemies before you mine, or you will get attacked from behind mid-swing.
Because metals cannot go through portals, you need to either smelt your Scrap Iron on-site or transport it home by boat. Building a small outpost near a good Swamp with a Smelter and Charcoal Kiln saves enormous time.
Iron Gear Priority
Once you have enough Scrap Iron smelted, here is what to build first:
- Iron Mace — the best weapon for the Swamp, including against Bonemass.
- Banded Shield — a serious defensive upgrade.
- Iron Armor set — helmet, chest, and legs.
- Iron Pickaxe — faster mining than the Antler Pickaxe.
- Ironhead Arrows — for your bow when you need range.
You also need Iron to upgrade your Forge, which unlocks access to more recipes. Do not skip the Forge upgrades.
Bog Witch — The Swamp Trader
The Swamp has its own trader called the Bog Witch. She appears in the Swamp biome and sells useful items including new food ingredients and crafting components. Keep an eye out for her marker when exploring. She can save you a lot of gathering time on certain recipes.

Boss 3: Bonemass
Bonemass is the Swamp boss and the biggest difficulty spike in the early game. He is a massive pile of animated sludge and he will end you if you show up without Poison Resistance Mead.
How to find Bonemass: Read Vegvisir runestones found inside Sunken Crypts. These mark Bonemass’s altar on your map.
How to summon Bonemass: Collect 10 Withered Bones from Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts. Place them in your hotbar and use them at Bonemass’s altar — a large skull sitting in a pool of water in the Swamp.
Bonemass’s attacks:
- Melee slam — a large physical hit at close range.
- Poison cloud — he does a heave and releases a poison cloud around his body. When you see the wind-up, move away fast. This is deadly without Poison Resistance Mead.
- Summon adds — occasionally spawns Blobs and Skeletons mid-fight. Kill the Skeletons quickly as they can distract you at bad moments.
How to beat Bonemass: Bonemass is resistant to arrows — do not bring your bow expecting it to work. This is a melee fight. Drink your Poison Resistance Mead before you enter the fight, and drink another when the first one expires. Use a blunt weapon — the Iron Mace is ideal since Bonemass is weak to Blunt damage. Get in, hit him a few times, back off to avoid the poison cloud, then move in again. Heal by retreating — Bonemass has no ranged attacks so you can safely back off a good distance to recover. Keep your food topped up throughout.
Bonemass drops: Bonemass’s Trophy and the Wishbone. The Wishbone is essential for finding Silver deposits buried underground in the Mountain biome. Without it, you would never find silver — it does not show on the surface. Mount the trophy on the Sacrificial Stones to unlock Bonemass’s Forsaken Power, which gives you strong resistance to Physical damage for five minutes.

What Comes After the Swamp?
With Bonemass defeated, the Wishbone in your possession, and a full set of Iron gear on your back, you are ready for the Mountains. The next stage brings wolves, Drakes, freezing cold, and Silver ore buried deep underground. You will need Frost Resistance Mead and warm clothing before you go, and the Wishbone to find the Silver that powers Mountain-tier gear.
After that come the Plains, the Mistlands, the Ashlands, and finally the Deep North — the brand new final biome added in Valheim 1.0. It is a long road, but these first three biomes build the habits that carry you all the way through.
Common Mistakes in the Meadows to Swamp Arc
- Not claiming a bed before exploring — dying without a bed sends you back to the Sacrificial Stones with no gear.
- Mining Copper only from the surface — Copper deposits extend deep underground. Always mine all the way down for maximum yield.
- Building Bronze sword before Bronze Axe — the Bronze Axe unlocks Fine Wood and Portals, which are far more valuable than a weapon upgrade at this stage.
- Fighting The Elder at night — Greydwarfs and Trolls join the fight and create chaos. Always fight during the day on a cleared battlefield.
- Entering the Swamp without Poison Resistance Mead — Blobs, Oozers, Leeches, and Bonemass all deal Poison. Without resistance you will drain health faster than you can eat food.
- Trying to use arrows on Bonemass — he is resistant to pierce damage. Put the bow away and get in close with a mace.
- Walking through shallow Swamp water without checking for Leeches — they are nearly invisible and the Poison damage stacks fast.
- Forgetting to collect Thistle in the Black Forest — you will need large amounts for food and Poison Resistance Mead recipes. Grab every one you see.
