Valheim 1.0 Minimum PC Requirements (Windows)
These are the official minimum system requirements for running Valheim 1.0 on Windows, as confirmed by Iron Gate and listed on Steam:
- OS: Windows 7 or later (64-bit)
- Processor: 2.6 GHz Quad Core or similar
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7970
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 1 GB available space
- Network: Average stable internet connection
A 64-bit processor and operating system are required. 32-bit systems will not run the game.
At minimum settings, the game is playable but you will see lower frame rates and may need to dial back graphics in dense biomes like the Swamp or when exploring large player-built bases. That said, the game’s low-poly art style means it holds up visually even at lower settings.
Valheim 1.0 Recommended PC Requirements (Windows)
For a smooth experience at 1080p with comfortable frame rates, these are the recommended specs:
- OS: Windows 10 or later (64-bit)
- Processor: Intel i5 3GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 3GHz
- Memory: 16 GB RAM
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 1 GB available space
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
With these specs, Valheim 1.0 runs well at 1080p across all biomes including the Deep North, even in dense forests and around complex bases. If you have a GTX 1060 or RX 580 sitting in your rig, you are in a good spot.
Valheim 1.0 PC Requirements for Mac
Valheim runs natively on macOS, including Apple Silicon chips. There is no translation layer needed on M1, M2, M3, or M4 Macs — the game runs directly and smoothly.
Minimum Mac requirements:
- OS: macOS 10.13 or later
- Processor: 2.6 GHz Quad Core or similar
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: Radeon Pro 450 or R9 M290X

- Memory: 8 GB RAM (minimum) / 16 GB RAM (recommended)
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 950 (minimum) / GeForce GTX 1060 (recommended)
- Storage: 1 GB available space
Valheim is also Steam Deck Verified — meaning it has been officially tested and confirmed to run well on Valve’s handheld PC. If you own a Steam Deck, Valheim 1.0 is a great fit for it. The game’s controls adapt well to a controller, and Iron Gate has added full console support with the 1.0 release on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
How Much Storage Does Valheim 1.0 Need?
Very little. Valheim 1.0 is approximately 4.3 GB to download on most platforms. The Xbox One version is slightly smaller at around 3.0 GB, while the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store versions are about 6.5 GB. For a game with this much content, that is an extremely small footprint.
You will not need to clear out your hard drive or SSD to make room. Even entry-level gaming setups with modest storage will have no trouble fitting it.
Does Valheim 1.0 Support Ultrawide Monitors?
Yes. Valheim natively supports standard ultrawide resolutions like 21:9. If you are on a super-ultrawide (32:9), be aware that the UI can occasionally stretch or misbehave. Standard ultrawide works well out of the box with no extra configuration needed.
Does Valheim 1.0 Support DLSS or FSR?
No. As of 1.0, Valheim does not feature native support for NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR. This is worth knowing because those technologies would not help much anyway — most of Valheim’s performance limitations come from your CPU’s single-core speed, not the GPU. Upscaling tools only help GPU-bound workloads. When Valheim drops frames, it is usually your processor handling game logic, not your graphics card struggling with pixels.
Why Is Valheim CPU-Bound Rather Than GPU-Bound?
This is one of the most common questions from players trying to troubleshoot performance. Valheim runs on Unity, and the engine is heavily reliant on a single CPU core for most game logic — things like physics simulations, AI, crafting calculations, and base instance tracking all run on one thread.
What this means practically: you can have a powerful GPU sitting at 40% load while your CPU is maxed out on a single core, causing stutters and frame drops. The best thing you can do for Valheim performance is have a CPU with strong single-core clock speed. A fast modern processor at 3.5 GHz or above makes a bigger difference than upgrading your graphics card.
What Causes FPS Drops in Valheim?
Even on powerful PCs, Valheim can stutter in specific situations. Here is what actually causes it:
- Base complexity — the number of active instances (placed building pieces, fires, tamed animals, chests) in your base is the biggest performance killer. Press F2 in-game to check your active instance count. Once you get past 10,000 instances, even high-end PCs can slow down. Build smart — use stone over wood, minimise decorative pieces that each count as separate instances, and keep fires and tamed animals to what you actually need.
- Dense forests and biomes — the Swamp and Mistlands can cause drops due to the amount of vegetation and fog effects rendered simultaneously. This is normal and expected on lower-end hardware.
- World generation loading — fast movement across unexplored terrain causes visible stutters as new chunks load. This improves on SSDs.
- Many players in co-op — running a server with 8–10 players increases CPU load substantially.
How to Boost FPS in Valheim 1.0
If you are getting lower frame rates than you would like, these are the most effective steps you can take — in order of impact:
1. Switch to the Vulkan API
This is the single biggest free performance gain available. Valheim supports both DirectX 11 and Vulkan. On most hardware, especially mid-range and older systems, switching to Vulkan increases FPS noticeably — sometimes by 50% or more. To use it, open Steam, find Valheim in your library, and choose “Play Valheim Using Vulkan” when the launch options appear. Note that Steam does not remember this choice — you need to select it each time you launch.
2. Lower Vegetation and Shadow Quality
These two settings have the biggest visual impact on performance. Vegetation density affects how many plants and trees are rendered around you. Shadow quality affects the light simulation across the world. Reducing both to medium or low gives a meaningful FPS boost, especially in dense biomes, while keeping the game looking good.
3. Turn Off VSync
VSync in Valheim adds noticeable input lag during combat, especially on older monitors. Turn it off and use your GPU control panel’s frame limiter if you want to cap the frame rate instead. Most players report smoother, more responsive combat without VSync.
4. Set Windows to High Performance Mode
Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add Valheim to the list, and set it to High Performance. This ensures Windows assigns the right GPU (important on laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics) and does not throttle clock speeds. If you are on a laptop, plug into wall power while playing — battery mode significantly reduces CPU and GPU performance on most systems.
5. Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
On Windows 10 version 2004 and later, you can enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Display Settings. This reduces latency and can improve frame pacing in CPU-limited games like Valheim. Press the Windows key, search for Graphics Settings, and enable the option if it appears.
6. Install on an SSD
Valheim is only 1 GB on Windows, but installing it on an SSD reduces world-loading stutters when you move into unexplored terrain. If you have an SSD available, put Valheim on it. The difference in chunk loading speed is noticeable, especially in the Deep North’s large underground areas.
7. Manage Your Base Build Count
As mentioned above, base complexity is a major FPS factor regardless of your hardware. Check your instance count with F2 in-game. If you are above 8,000–10,000, consider splitting your base into multiple smaller outposts, removing decorative pieces you do not use, or consolidating storage. This is not a graphics setting — it is a game logic load — and no amount of GPU power will fix it.
Can Old PCs Run Valheim 1.0?
Yes, better than almost any other modern survival game. Valheim’s minimum specs are genuinely modest. A PC with an Intel i5 processor from 2014, 8 GB of RAM, and a GTX 950 can run the game. An even older dual-core at 2.6 GHz with a GTX 500 series can technically launch it, though the experience will be limited.
The game’s low-poly art style means it looks intentional and clean even on lower graphics settings. You are not playing a downgraded version of a beautiful game — you are playing a game designed from the ground up to look good at any setting.
Can Laptops Run Valheim 1.0?
Yes, most gaming laptops from 2016 onwards will run Valheim 1.0 without issues. Non-gaming laptops are more hit or miss. If your laptop has a dedicated GPU alongside the integrated chip, make sure Windows is assigning Valheim to the dedicated GPU, not the integrated one. Use the High Performance setting in Windows Display Graphics options to force this. Also keep the laptop plugged in — battery power mode throttles performance significantly in most laptops.
