Witcher 3 Remastered Roach Fixes and Horse Riding Changes Explained

    TL;DR

    • Roach has been significantly improved in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered — movement, animations, and collision are all fixed.
    • CD PROJEKT RED added a “Legacy Roach” toggle so you can bring back the old buggy behavior if you want it.
    • Galloping now requires pressing the button instead of holding it — this changes how riding feels day to day.
    • A new Horse Control Input Sensitivity slider has been added under Settings → Controls.
    • You can now loot items without dismounting Roach — a quality-of-life change eleven years in the making.
    • Mounting, dismounting, cantering, and galloping animations have all been polished.
    • Collision avoidance while riding has been updated so Roach gets stuck less often.

Roach has been one of The Witcher 3’s most beloved sources of unintentional comedy since the game launched in 2015. Clips of Geralt’s horse appearing on rooftops, getting wedged into cliff faces, and teleporting to impossible locations spread across the internet for years. Roach’s chaotic behavior became part of the game’s identity.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered, which launched on September 29, 2026, fixes Roach properly for the first time. Movement is smoother. Collision avoidance actually works. Animations have been rebuilt. And CD PROJEKT RED, knowing full well what they were taking away, gave players a toggle to bring it all back.

This guide covers every Roach and horse riding change in Remastered so you know exactly what is different and how to use it.

What Was Wrong with Roach Before Remastered?

Roach’s problems in the original game were many and well-documented. The most famous was obstacle collision — Roach would routinely spawn on top of buildings, clip through walls, get stuck on small rocks, or simply refuse to navigate around objects that any real horse would step over. Calling Roach with the whistle sometimes resulted in the horse appearing from completely the wrong direction, having clearly teleported rather than walked to you.

Movement itself was stiff. Transition animations between walking, cantering, and galloping were abrupt. Mounting and dismounting looked awkward from many camera angles. Holding the gallop button rather than pressing it was unintuitive compared to most open world games released around the same period.

None of these issues broke the game. The Witcher 3 is still one of the greatest RPGs ever made. But Roach always felt like an unfinished piece of an otherwise polished experience. Remastered is the first time CD PROJEKT RED has gone back and addressed the riding system directly rather than patching around it.

    The Legacy Roach Toggle

This is the most important thing to know before anything else. CD PROJEKT RED did not simply fix Roach and move on. They built in a toggle that lets you switch between the new improved behavior and what the Level Design Lead Miles Tost called “legacy Roach.”

In an interview ahead of launch, Tost addressed the change directly: “One cool thing about the remaster update is that we have updates to Roach’s movement behavior. So on that account, it might be disappointing to some players, but hear me out. We got you. You can turn that off. So if you prefer legacy Roach the way you have grown to know her, be my guest.”

Design Director Karolina Kuzia framed it simply: “When it comes to Roach and her shenanigans, well, why fix something that is liked, right?”

The toggle is available in the settings menu. It does not require a save reload or a restart. You can switch between legacy and updated Roach behavior at any time during your playthrough.

Where to Find the Legacy Roach Toggle

    • Open the main menu or pause menu.
    • Go to Options.
    • Select Gameplay.
    • Look for the Roach Movement Behavior option.
    • Toggle between Updated (the new Remastered behavior) and Legacy (the classic buggy behavior).

The default setting on a new Remastered install is Updated. Imported saves from the previous version also default to Updated unless you manually switch to Legacy.

    Updated Collision Avoidance

The single most impactful technical fix for Roach in Remastered is the updated collision avoidance system. In the original game, Roach’s pathfinding while riding had a notorious tendency to steer directly into obstacles rather than around them. Small rocks, fence posts, and gentle slopes would cause Roach to stop dead, stagger, or clip through geometry entirely.

Remastered’s updated collision avoidance means Roach now navigates around obstacles more naturally. She follows the path of least resistance the way a real horse would, adjusting direction slightly to clear a rock or step over uneven ground rather than attempting to walk through it.

This change is most noticeable when riding at speed through Velen’s countryside or through the narrow paths of Skellige. Roach stays on track and responds to terrain more predictably. The chaos of the original collision system is replaced by something that feels intentional.

Gallop Input Change — Press Instead of Hold

This is a direct change to how you control Roach every time you ride. In the original game, reaching and maintaining a full gallop required you to hold the sprint button continuously. Let go and Roach would drop back to a canter.

In Remastered, cantering and galloping now require pressing the button instead of holding it. A single press shifts Roach up a gear. Press again to go faster. Press again or tap a separate input to slow down. You are no longer holding a button for the entire duration of every long journey.

This is a significant quality-of-life improvement for anyone who plays with a controller, especially over long sessions. The Witcher 3 has enormous maps. In the original game, riding from one side of Velen to the other with your thumb permanently on the sprint button was a small but persistent irritation. That irritation is gone in Remastered.

    Horse Control Input Sensitivity Slider

A brand new slider has been added to Settings → Controls called Horse Control Input Sensitivity. This slider adjusts how sharply and quickly Roach responds to your directional inputs while riding.

At lower sensitivity values, Roach turns and reacts more gradually to stick or mouse movements. This suits players who prefer a looser, more natural feel when riding through open terrain. At higher values, Roach responds more immediately to input, which suits players who prefer tighter control when navigating narrow paths or riding close to enemies.

The default value sits in the middle of the range. Adjust it based on your control preference and whether you find the default feel too sluggish or too sharp for your riding style.

    Polished Mounting and Dismounting Animations

Geralt’s mounting and dismounting animations have been rebuilt for Remastered. In the original game, these transitions were functional but abrupt — Geralt would appear to snap onto or off Roach with limited animation blending, particularly when mounting at speed or dismounting in combat.

The Remastered animations play more smoothly from more angles and in more situations. Mounting from a run blends into the saddle rather than cutting. Dismounting into combat connects more naturally to Geralt’s combat stance. The difference is subtle but adds up across a full playthrough where you mount and dismount dozens of times per session.

    Polished Canter and Gallop Animations

The actual riding animations — the cycles for cantering and galloping — have also been polished. Roach’s movement at speed looked uneven in the original game, with a subtle but noticeable choppiness to the gallop cycle that was most visible when riding directly toward or away from the camera.

In Remastered, both the canter and gallop cycles are smoother. Combined with the updated shading model, improved lighting, and in some cases ray-traced hair on Roach in PC builds, riding through the Continent in Remastered looks and feels noticeably more refined than before.

    Looting Without Dismounting Roach

This is one of the most celebrated quality-of-life changes in all of Patch 5.0, not just in the riding system. You can now loot items without dismounting Roach.

In the original game, looting any item from the ground required dismounting, picking up the loot, and then remounting. In a game where loot is scattered across every battlefield and exploration path, this meant constant interruptions to momentum. A fight against a group of bandits would leave you dismounting and remounting three or four times just to collect what they dropped.

In Remastered, you ride up to a lootable item, interact with it, and pick it up without ever leaving the saddle. The interaction prompt appears while mounted and works the same way it does on foot. It sounds like a small thing. In practice, it changes the rhythm of exploration and post-combat looting in a way that feels immediately natural.

The looting window when mounted works the same as on foot — you see the contents of a container or corpse and can take individual items or take all at once.

How the Roach Changes Feel in Practice

Taken individually, each of these changes is meaningful but incremental. Taken together, they make riding feel like a properly designed system rather than something CD PROJEKT RED knew was rough and shipped anyway.

The press-to-gallop input change has the broadest moment-to-moment impact. You notice it within the first few minutes of riding. The collision avoidance improvement becomes obvious in hilly or cluttered terrain. The looting change pays off every single time there is anything to pick up after a fight.

The legacy toggle is the smartest decision in the whole package. Players who built affection for Roach’s chaos over eleven years do not lose it. They can opt out of every fix and keep the horse they fell in love with. For everyone else, Remastered’s Roach is the version the original game always should have shipped with.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Did CD PROJEKT RED fix Roach in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Yes. Roach received several direct fixes in Remastered including updated collision avoidance, polished mounting and dismounting animations, smoother canter and gallop cycles, and a new press-to-gallop input replacing the old hold-to-gallop system. All fixes default to on when you update to Remastered.

Can you still get the old buggy Roach in Remastered?

Yes. CD PROJEKT RED added a Legacy Roach toggle in the gameplay settings. Switching to Legacy restores Roach’s original movement behavior, including the quirks and collision bugs that made her famous. You can switch between Updated and Legacy at any time without restarting your game.

Where is the Legacy Roach toggle in the settings?

Go to Options → Gameplay. Look for the Roach Movement Behavior option. Set it to Legacy to restore the original behavior, or Updated to use the new Remastered movement system. The default on any fresh Remastered install or imported save is Updated.

How does the new gallop input work in Remastered?

Cantering and galloping now require pressing the button rather than holding it. One press moves Roach up to a canter, another press moves her to a gallop. You no longer need to hold the sprint button continuously while riding. This applies to both controller and keyboard inputs.

What does the Horse Control Input Sensitivity slider do?

The new Horse Control Input Sensitivity slider, found under Settings → Controls, adjusts how quickly and sharply Roach responds to your directional inputs. Lower values make Roach turn more gradually and feel looser. Higher values make her respond more immediately to input changes. Adjust it based on your preferred feel for open-terrain riding versus tighter navigation.

Can you loot while riding Roach in Remastered?

Yes. You can now loot items, containers, and corpses without dismounting Roach. Ride up to a lootable object, interact with it, and pick up items while staying in the saddle. The loot window works the same as on foot. This is one of the most-requested quality-of-life changes in the game’s history.

Do the Roach changes apply to all platforms?

Yes. All Roach and horse riding changes in Patch 5.0 apply to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Legacy Roach toggle is available on all platforms. The Horse Control Input Sensitivity slider is available on all platforms in Settings → Controls.

Does the Roach fix affect the horse’s appearance in Remastered?

The movement and behavior fixes are separate from visual changes. On PC with ray-traced hair enabled, Roach’s mane and coat benefit from the ray-traced HairWorks feature added in Remastered, which improves how lighting and shading interact with her hair. The Remastered lighting model also makes Roach look noticeably better in most outdoor environments regardless of platform.
