Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered: Skill Tree Guide — How the New System Works

    By Lilly Daniels · September 29, 2026 · Updated October 16, 2026 · 16 min read
the witcher 3 wild hunt remastered
    • Patch 5.0 fully reworks the skill system — it is no longer point-gated by tier, but uses a prerequisite path system.
    • Every skill now has three ranks you can upgrade into.
    • Your skill points are reset when you first load the game after updating — plan your build before you jump in.
    • There are four skill trees: Combat, Signs, Alchemy, and General.
    • The General tree now unlocks all six Witcher School Techniques from the start — no points required to reach them.
    • Mutagens still use the red, blue, and green color system to match and boost your tree of choice.
    • Blood and Wine owners have access to Mutations on top of the base trees — and Blood and Wine is now included free for all Remastered owners.
    • Several skills were renamed in the Remastered update to better reflect what they actually do — check tooltips before assuming you know a skill from the old game.
    • Post-launch patches 5.00b, 5.00c, and 5.01 have shipped since launch — see the patch notes section below for what changed.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered skill tree is one of the biggest gameplay changes in Patch 5.0. CD Projekt Red didn’t just tweak a few numbers — they rebuilt how you progress through skills from the ground up. The Remastered update launched on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Whether you’re returning to the game or playing for the first time, this guide explains everything clearly so you know exactly what to expect before you spend a single skill point.

What Changed in the Witcher 3 Remastered Skill Tree?

In the original game and the previous next-gen update, you unlocked higher tier skills by spending a set number of points anywhere in that tree first. It didn’t matter which skills you picked — you just needed the point total to reach the next row.

That system is gone in the Remastered update.

    Here’s how it works now:

    • Skills are arranged in branching paths. To unlock a skill, you need the specific prerequisite skill before it in the path.
    • You no longer need to bank a total point count. One point spent on a prerequisite unlocks the next skill in that line.
    • Every skill can now be upgraded three times, making each choice a bigger long-term investment.
    • The skill screen itself has been redesigned into a proper tree layout, making it much easier to plan ahead.
    • Several skills have been renamed across all four trees to better reflect their effects. If you’re a returning player, reread every tooltip before spending points — the name you remember may now refer to something slightly different, or a skill may have been renamed entirely.
    • New visual effects have been added to all skills and Signs, including upgraded Sign forms.

Important: Because of these changes, your skill points from previous saves are fully reset when Patch 5.0 loads. You get all your points back to spend fresh. Plan your build before you dive in.

How Skill Slots and Mutagens Still Work

Before getting into each tree, here’s a quick reminder about the core system that hasn’t changed:

    • Unlocking a skill doesn’t automatically make it active. You need to place it in a skill slot on the character screen.
    • You have up to 12 active skill slots. Early in the game, only a few are available. They unlock as you level up.
    • Slots are grouped into rows of three. If all three skills in a row match the same color, the mutagen slotted next to them gives a bigger bonus.
    • Match mutagen colors to your tree: red for Combat, blue for Signs, green for Alchemy.
    • General skills are brown and work differently — they don’t match mutagen colors in the same way.

This system rewards planning your slot layout carefully, not just picking the best-looking skills.

Witcher 3 Remastered Combat Skill Tree Explained

Witcher 3 Remastered Combat Skill Tree Explained

The Combat tree is for players who want to win fights with their swords — fast attacks, heavy attacks, adrenaline, and finishers.

In the Remastered version, the Combat tree opens with a choice between two starting skills:

    • Muscle Memory — boosts fast attack damage and ties into adrenaline point generation. This is the go-to pick for melee-focused builds.
    • Arrow Deflection — lets Geralt deflect arrows with his sword. Better for players who plan to fight a lot of ranged enemies early on.

Whichever you pick first sets the direction for your early build. Both paths eventually connect further down the tree, so you’re not locked out of the other side permanently.

    Key Combat Skills to Know

    • Strength Training — boosts strong attack damage. Unlocks after your Tier 1 pick.
    • Precise Blows — increases the chance of fast attacks landing critical hits.
    • Resolve — reduces the adrenaline point loss when you take damage in combat.
    • Undying — when your health drops to zero, adrenaline points are spent to keep you alive instead. A lifesaver on harder difficulties.
    • Whirl — Geralt spins and attacks all nearby enemies continuously. One of the best combat skills in the game for crowd control.
    • Rend — charges a devastating heavy attack that ignores enemy armor. Essential for boss fights.
    • Counterattack — improves the damage of counterattacks and parries.
    • Flood of Anger — converts adrenaline points into increased Sign intensity. A great bridge skill between Combat and Signs builds.

The Combat tree is the most straightforward path for players who want aggressive, melee-focused gameplay. Pair red mutagens with your slotted Combat skills to maximize the bonus.

Witcher 3 Remastered Signs Skill Tree Explained

The Signs tree turns Geralt into a magic-first fighter. Instead of relying on your swords, you control and damage enemies using the five Signs: Igni, Quen, Yrden, Aard, and Axii.

The Signs tree opening works the same as it always has — you choose which Sign to specialize in first, then the tree branches out from there. Your first choice still meaningfully shapes your early game.

    • Igni — fire damage, great for burning enemies and applying pressure.
    • Aard — knock back and stun. Good for clearing groups and creating breathing room.
    • Yrden — traps enemies in a field that slows or damages them. Strong against ghosts and specters.
    • Quen — a protective shield around Geralt that absorbs damage. Extremely useful on higher difficulties.
    • Axii — confuses enemies or controls them. Also useful in dialogue to avoid certain confrontations.

Note for returning players: The five per-Sign intensity skills from the original game (Aard Intensity, Igni Intensity, Yrden Intensity, Quen Intensity, and Axii Intensity) have been removed from the Remastered Signs tree entirely. The old Quen Discharge skill — which sent absorbed damage back at attackers — has also been cut. In its place is the new Exploding Shield skill, which received a damage reflection fix in Patch 5.01. Plan your Signs build around this new tree structure.

    Key Signs Skills to Know

    • Far-Reaching Aard — increases the range and angle of the Aard cone blast.
    • Melt Armor — Igni can now reduce enemy armor, making them take more sword damage. Great in hybrid builds.
    • Sustained Glyphs — makes Yrden traps last longer.
    • Active Shield — converts Quen into an active shield you can maintain. Any damage absorbed heals Geralt.
    • Exploding Shield — a new Quen skill in the Remastered tree that reflects damage back at attackers. Note: damage reflection was broken at launch and was fixed in Patch 5.01 on October 8, 2026.
    • Puppet — Axii’s alternate mode allows you to control an enemy and make them fight for you.
    • Supercharged Glyphs — enemies caught in Yrden take extra damage from all sources.
    • Aard Sweep — Aard now hits all enemies around Geralt instead of in a cone.
    • Firestream — Igni changes from a blast to a continuous stream of fire. Great sustained damage.

Pair blue mutagens with your Signs skills for maximum Sign intensity bonuses.

Witcher 3 Remastered Alchemy Skill Tree Explained

Witcher 3 Remastered Alchemy Skill Tree Explained
Witcher 3 Remastered Alchemy Skill Tree Explained

The Alchemy tree is for players who want to prepare before a fight, not just react during one. It focuses on potions, oils, bombs, toxicity management, and decoctions.

In the Remastered update, the Alchemy tree opens with three starting skills available immediately:

    • Refreshment — potions restore Vitality as well as their main effect. Keeps you topped up mid-fight.
    • Efficiency — increases the number of charges on all potions and bombs. You get more uses from everything you craft.
    • Frenzy — slows time when a potion is consumed if your toxicity is high enough. One of the best early combat advantages in the game.

    Key Alchemy Skills to Know

    • Acquired Tolerance — increases maximum Toxicity based on the number of known Alchemy formulas. Unlocks higher potion combos.
    • Protective Coating — oils applied to weapons also grant a damage bonus against their target enemy type. Massive damage boost for the right fight.
    • Heightened Tolerance — lets you consume more potions before going into overdose. Unlocks aggressive multi-potion builds.
    • Tissue Transmutation — consuming a Mutagen Decoction temporarily increases maximum Vitality. Stacks very well.
    • Delayed Recovery — potion effects don’t fade until you drop below a toxicity threshold. Keeps buffs active much longer.
    • Side Effects — drinking a potion randomly triggers the effect of another random potion at no extra toxicity cost.
    • Killing Spree — each kill increases your Vitality regeneration temporarily when you have an active decoction.

Note: Alchemy has a higher skill ceiling than Combat or Signs and rewards planning. It’s the strongest tree in the late game, especially on Death March difficulty. Pair green mutagens with your Alchemy skills.

Witcher 3 Remastered General Skill Tree Explained

The General tree is the most changed in Patch 5.0. It’s a collection of passive bonuses and — most importantly — it’s where you find the Witcher School Techniques.

In the old game, you had to spend points to unlock the School Techniques deep in the tree. In the Remastered version, all six School Techniques are available right from the start:

    • Cat School Techniques — fast attack damage scales with light armor. Best for light armour, high-speed builds.
    • Wolf School Techniques — bonus adrenaline point generation and critical hit damage.
    • Bear School Techniques — strong attack damage scales with heavy armor. Best for tanky, hard-hitting builds.
    • Griffin School Techniques — Sign intensity scales with medium armor. Best for Signs builds.
    • Manticore School Techniques — increases sword damage scaling based on the number of oils you have active.
    • Viper School Techniques — critical hits apply poison. Good in Alchemy hybrid builds.

Because these are all available immediately, you can commit to your preferred build archetype from your very first skill point. This is a big deal. In older versions you had to wait before the technique you actually wanted became reachable.

    Other Key General Skills

    • Gourmet — eating food extends Vitality regeneration for 20 minutes. Extremely useful early in the game.
    • Sun and Stars — Vitality regenerates during the day when out of combat; Stamina regenerates at night during combat.
    • Strong Back — increases maximum inventory weight. Quality of life pick for players who like to loot everything.
    • Rage Management — when Adrenaline Points are at max, they can be spent to cast Signs with no Stamina cost.
    • Metabolic Control — reduces maximum Toxicity but increases how effective each level of Toxicity is for bonuses.

Witcher 3 Remastered Mutations — Blood and Wine

If you own Blood and Wine — which is now included free for all Remastered owners across all platforms — you also unlock the Mutations system. This is a second layer of build customization on top of the four main trees.

    • Mutations are unlocked in Toussaint after completing a specific point in the Blood and Wine story.
    • They offer powerful passive effects that change how core mechanics work — far stronger than regular skills.
    • You can only have one Mutation active at a time.
    • Some of the strongest Mutations include Euphoria (toxicity directly increases sword and Sign damage — the foundation of the most powerful build in the game) and Conductors of Magic (sword damage boosts active Sign intensity).
    • Unlocking Mutations requires spending ability points and mutagen resources together.

    Witcher 3 Remastered Post-Launch Patch Notes (5.00b, 5.00c, 5.01)

CD Projekt Red has shipped three updates since the September 29 launch. Here’s what changed in each, with a focus on skill-related fixes.

    Patch 5.00b — October 1, 2026 (PS5 & Xbox Series X|S)

A stability patch addressing post-launch technical reports on console. No skill tree changes were included.

    Hotfix 5.00c — October 1, 2026 (PC only)

A PC-only hotfix addressing critical issues flagged by players within days of launch. No skill tree changes included. Key fixes:

    • Fixed an issue where saves could not be loaded if the Documents folder path contained special characters.
    • Restored the ability to launch the original Classic version (pre-Remastered, version 1.32).
    • Fixed a HairWorks issue that caused significant performance and graphics problems for some players.
    • Visual adjustments in Velen — adjusted bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and path-traced lighting.

    Patch 5.01 — October 8, 2026 (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S)

The first full patch post-launch. Two skill fixes are included. Note: Patch 5.01 has not yet shipped to Nintendo Switch 2 — the Switch 2 version remains on the launch build for now, with CDPR confirming shared fixes are planned for a future update.

    Skill fixes in 5.01:

    • Exploding Shield — damage reflection was missing at launch. This has now been added. If you placed this skill in your active slots expecting it to reflect damage and it wasn’t working, it is now fixed.
    • Synergy skill — was displaying incorrect bonus values in the tooltip. The display now shows the correct numbers. No change to the actual bonus amount, only the display was wrong.

    Other gameplay fixes in 5.01:

    • The “Automatically Apply Blade Oils” feature now works correctly after restarting the game (was only working within the same session at launch).
    • Fixed delayed dodge response.
    • Fixed Geralt’s stamina being fully drained when sprinting and dodging simultaneously.
    • Fixed an issue where bombs could be thrown even when the option was disabled.
    • Fixed an Aard finisher collision issue where Geralt would collide with dead enemies.
    • Fixed a Skill tooltip display issue where tooltips wouldn’t update until hovered over again (PC).
    • Improvements to Bloom, tone mapping, character lighting, Ray Tracing, and Path Tracing.
    • Console-only: New Bloom, Light Shafts, and Depth of Field graphic options added for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players.

Tips for Building Geralt in the New Skill Tree

    • Decide your build before spending your first point. The new system rewards committing to a direction early. Spreading points thin slows your progress on every path.
    • Upgrade skills you already have, don’t just rush new ones. With three ranks per skill, deepening what you’ve got is often better than unlocking something new.
    • Match mutagen colors to your slotted skills. Three matching colors in a row gives a significant bonus on top of the mutagen’s base stat.
    • Pick your Witcher School Technique first in General. All six are available from the start — grab the one that fits your build and build around it from the beginning.
    • Don’t ignore Alchemy on harder difficulties. Even a Combat-focused build benefits from Frenzy and Refreshment early on.
    • Gourmet is strong early. A single point for 20 minutes of health regen on food is one of the best early picks in the game, regardless of build.
    • Reread all skill tooltips if you’re a returning player. Several skills have been renamed in Remastered. Don’t assume a familiar name does exactly what you remember.
    • Update to Patch 5.01 before building a Quen-focused build. Exploding Shield’s damage reflection was broken at launch and only fixed in 5.01. If you’re on an older build (Switch 2 especially), don’t count on this skill working.

Witcher 3 Remastered Skill Tree — Frequently Asked Questions

Are skill points reset in Witcher 3 Remastered?

Yes. Because the entire skill tree structure has been redesigned, all your skill points are reset when you load the game after updating to Patch 5.0. You get all your points back and can spend them fresh under the new system.

How do you unlock skills in the new Witcher 3 Remastered skill tree?

You now need to unlock the prerequisite skill in a path before you can unlock the next one. There is no longer a total point requirement to reach higher tier skills. Follow the path, and one point spent on each prerequisite unlocks the next skill in the chain.

How many times can you upgrade a skill in Witcher 3 Remastered?

Every skill can be upgraded three times. This is new to the Remastered update. Previously, most skills had five ranks. Now they have three, but the values have been rebalanced to keep the overall power level similar.

What are the four skill trees in Witcher 3 Remastered?

The four trees are Combat (red), Signs (blue), Alchemy (green), and General (brown). Combat covers swords and adrenaline. Signs covers the five magical abilities. Alchemy covers potions, oils, and bombs. General covers passive bonuses and Witcher School Techniques.

Are all Witcher School Techniques available from the start in Remastered?

Yes. In the new General tree, all six School Techniques — Cat, Wolf, Bear, Griffin, Manticore, and Viper — are available from the very first point spent. You no longer have to work through the tree to reach the one you want.

Do skills still need to be placed in slots to be active?

Yes. Unlocking a skill does not automatically activate it. You still need to drag it into one of your active skill slots on the character screen. You have up to 12 slots total, which unlock gradually as you level up.

What is the strongest build in Witcher 3 Remastered?

The Euphoria build — which combines Alchemy’s toxicity system with the Euphoria Mutation from Blood and Wine — remains the highest damage ceiling in the game. It converts your toxicity level into bonus sword and Sign damage. It requires investment in Alchemy and reaching Blood and Wine’s Mutation system, but the payoff is enormous in the late game.

What were the post-launch skill fixes in Witcher 3 Remastered?

Patch 5.01, released on October 8, 2026, fixed two skill issues. The Exploding Shield skill was missing its damage reflection mechanic at launch — this has now been added. The Synergy skill was displaying incorrect bonus values in its tooltip — the display has been corrected. Both fixes are live on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 players are still on the launch version, with CDPR confirming shared fixes are planned for a future update.

Were any skills removed from the Signs tree in Remastered?

Yes. The five per-Sign intensity skills (Aard Intensity, Igni Intensity, Yrden Intensity, Quen Intensity, and Axii Intensity) were removed from the Remastered Signs tree. Quen Discharge — the old skill that reflected absorbed damage back at attackers — was also cut. It has been replaced by the new Exploding Shield skill, which was fixed to properly reflect damage in Patch 5.01.
