World of Warcraft Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek goes live on August 11, 2026 following server maintenance, bringing the second major content chapter of the Midnight expansion alongside a sweeping class tuning pass, housing updates, PvP overhauls, and the foundation for Midnight Season 2, which begins one week later on August 18. Here’s a complete breakdown of everything in the update.
The Coiled Isle — New Zone Overview
The central addition in Patch 12.1 is The Coiled Isle, a mysterious landmass off the east coast of Zul’Aman that players could see on the horizon during Midnight’s launch but couldn’t reach. The island is said to be the ancient prison of a vengeful loa named Ula’tek, and the story follows Zul’jarra as she pursues her brother Zul’jan to bring him and others home before the island’s secrets consume everything.
While on the Coiled Isle, players gain access to a custom talent tree providing zone-specific perks, including passive bonuses like reduced venom potency from the island’s poisonous environment. The zone features Curse Surges — regular spawns of rare elite enemies at five rotating locations throughout the isle — and public events inside The Vaults of Atal’Utek that escalate into boss encounters.
Patch 12.1 also introduces Lairs, described as an evolution of world bosses. These are instanced encounters found in specific locations — similar to Delves — with scaling difficulty up to flexible Mythic with 15 to 25 players, complete with a summoning stone outside each entrance.
New Dungeon — Altar of Fangs
A brand-new three-boss dungeon called Altar of Fangs arrives with Patch 12.1. It will be available up to Mythic 0 difficulty at launch and will join the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ rotation when Season 2 begins on August 18. The full Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon rotation is:
- Altar of Fangs (new)
- Murder Row
- Den of Nalorakk
- The Blinding Vale
- Voidscar Arena
- Kings’ Rest (returning with design and QoL updates)
- Ruby Life Pools (returning)
- Temple of Sethraliss (returning)
Midnight Season 2 — Everything Starting August 18
Venomous Abyss Raid
The Season 2 raid is Venomous Abyss, featuring eight boss encounters culminating in a fight against Ula’tek herself, unleashed by Zul’jan’s actions. The raid arrives with Season 2 on August 18.
New Delves
Three new Delves launch with the content update: The Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle, and the Venomfall Deeps Nemesis Delve. With Season 2, Bountiful Delves become available, pushing into upper tiers beyond Tier 7 and introducing a new Nemesis boss encounter. Existing Midnight Delves are also getting new snake and venom variant enemies.
Nightmare Mode and Season 2 Prey
Season 2 opens a new questline called “A Slithering Threat” as Nightmare Mode returns with four new serpent-themed targets across the Coiled Isle. Players collect Ossified Relics to activate Haunted Braziers around the zone, summoning Ral’kala for group encounters and unique rewards. A permanent “Curse of the Isle” toggle also adds increased danger to the zone for players wanting an even greater challenge. The Season 2 Prey Journey track offers new decor, cosmetics, and mounts.
PvP Season 2 and Training Grounds Arena
A new PvP Season begins alongside Season 2. Training Grounds now expands to 3v3 Arenas versus bots, giving new PvP players a safer entry point before jumping into live arena content. Access it through the Player vs. Player tab in the Group Finder.
Housing Updates
Blueprints
The biggest housing addition is the Blueprints system, which allows players to export and share their home layouts. Blueprints can cover the full house (exterior and interior), interior only, exterior only, or a single room. Key details:
- Players have up to 50 save slots for layouts plus 10 auto-save slots
- Auto-saves are created automatically when importing a Blueprint
- Blueprint codes can be shared cross-region (excluding China) and linked in chat
- Importing shows a complete list of required rooms, decor, and budget needed before committing
- A Reset button has been added to wipe the whole house or just interior or exterior
- A new Export permission can be assigned to visiting players
Pet Beds
Players can now place noncombat companion pets in their home using Pet Bed decor items. Pets placed indoors can be set to Stationary or Roaming, using new navigation technology to move around your decor. Up to 10 beds indoors and 5 outdoors can be placed. A small number of pets are unavailable for placement.
Additional Housing Changes
- Houses can now reach level 12, unlocking increased limits and large exteriors
- Four new Neighborhood Endeavors for Amani trolls, kobolds, Ohn’ahran centaur, and tortollan
- New Artisanal Rooms available from General Contractor NPCs in orc, human, night elf, and blood elf styles for Community Coupons
- Players can now move the entry room to any location in the house, including other floors
- Dye crafting has been streamlined, significantly freeing up bag space
- New dye colors added, including darker appearances from before patch 12.0.5
- Two new decor categories: Vines and Hanging Plants and Pet Beds
Global Class Changes
Two overarching changes affect all max-level players. First, player health and creature damage at max level have both been increased by 25%, with health consumables adjusted to match. Blizzard’s intent is to reduce damage spikiness and make healing feel more reactive rather than purely reactive to oneshots. Second, DPS cooldown throughput is being redistributed — burst windows during major cooldowns are being tuned down for several specs while steady-state damage outside cooldowns is increased, aiming for more consistent pacing throughout fights.
All class interrupts now display a “missed” visual if used when no enemy cast was active, helping players and teammates track interrupt usage. Diminishing return categories now reset after 20 seconds (was 16 seconds) for Season 2 PvP.
Highlighted Class Changes by Role
Tanks
Blood Death Knight receives substantial baseline damage buffs — Heart Strike up 25%, Marrowrend up 50% — alongside Dancing Rune Weapon Parry increasing to 30% and several absorb/leech talents buffed. Guardian Druid gets a full redesign of the Wild Guardian Apex Talent and Gory Fur, distributing power across a longer duration and broader kit. Protection Paladin sees Consecration damage doubled, Shield of the Righteous up 150%, and Hammer of Light reduced by 33% to shift power out of cooldown windows. Vengeance Demon Hunter gains Sigil of Chains as a baseline ability at level 35, with its cooldown reduced to 60 seconds and it no longer replacing Sigil of Misery.
Healers
Restoration Druid receives two new talents — Overgrowth and Flash of Clarity — with Innervate redesigned to restore 25% of max mana over 8 seconds and Abundance redesigned around a clear 5-Rejuvenation threshold. Holy Paladin gains a 19% across-the-board healing increase with additional targeted buffs to Eternal Flame and Word of Glory. Discipline Priest sees Shadow Mend redesigned as a passive Flash Heal upgrade and Smite damage increased by 40%. Mistweaver Monk gains a new Vital Expenditure talent as a choice node with Dancing Mists, and Mastery: Gust of Mist healing increases by 50%. Restoration Shaman gets a new Swelling Tides talent, Riptide direct healing up 25% and periodic healing up 100%, and Healing Rain redesigned with a 12-second cooldown and 18-second duration to allow more flexible repositioning.
DPS
Frost Death Knight sees a significant power redistribution — Howling Blast and Frost Fever damage doubled, but Pillar of Frost Strength reduced to 20% and Obliterate down 12.5%. Devourer Demon Hunter has Mastery: Monster Within’s Void Metamorphosis bonus reduced by 66%, with all ability damage up 32% to compensate. Marksmanship Hunter gets Explosive Shot redesigned with a new duration-based area detonation model and a new Unstable Trigger talent, Double Tap removed, and Headshot removed. Subtlety Rogue gets Goremaw’s Bite redesigned into a multi-target bleed, Shadow Techniques frequency increased by 40%, and base Energy generation increased. Fury Warrior gains a new Carving Blades talent for single-target Whirlwind viability and Rampaging Ruin redesigned as a Rampage-triggered ground slam. Arms Warrior gets Tactical Edge redesigned to immediately grant Sudden Death on Colossus Smash and Ravager redesigned to apply a 50% bleed damage amp on hit targets.
Cooldown Manager and UI Updates
The Cooldown Manager can now track trinkets, potions, racial abilities, and their durations. Players can ping their action bar or the Cooldown Manager directly to share ability status with the group. Healers can now configure or hide specific buffs on Raid Frames through a new Group Buff Filter UI, and your own unit frame can be pinged to share current health status. Buff and debuff icons on raid and party frames now support independent sizes and border scales.
The Ping System expands to support pinging spells, items, player resources like health and mana bars, and the environment directly using a new [@cursor] macro target. New slash commands include /pingspell and /pingitem.
Other notable UI changes: Auto Loot is now account-wide, Auction House filters persist across sessions, the World Map can now display player and cursor coordinates, and shift-clicking a map pin copies a /mappin slash command that can be shared outside the game and entered in chat.
Battle.net and Discord Integration
Players can now link their Battle.net and Discord accounts to chat with guildmates both in and out of the game — coordinating raid runs, PvP groups, or just hanging out — without switching between applications.
PvP Changes
A broad pass reduces movement speed slow values across the board for PvP combat. Most 70% slows have been reduced to 50%, most 50% slows to 30%, and 90% slows down to 70%. The intent is to preserve more room for positioning and escape without entirely removing the impact of snares. Players are now also immune to knockback effects while under Fear and Disorient crowd control. Battleground players now receive 20% less healing to reduce survivability and make combat more decisive.
Jimothy the Raccoon — New Hidden Pet
A virtual version of Jimothy the short-spined raccoon — based on the real-world viral animal — is being added to the game as a hidden pet in Patch 12.1. Blizzard confirmed Jimothy will be obtainable in-game rather than through the Blizzard Store, but has not disclosed where or how players will find him. Discovering the method will likely be a community effort once the patch goes live.
