WoW Patch 12.1.5 Adds a 5 to 7 Million Gold Mount — And It’s Going Away When Midnight Ends

World of Warcraft players have seen expensive gold sink mounts before — the Mighty Caravan Brutosaur is still infamous for its 5 million gold launch price and its later return as a $90 real-money shop item. Now Blizzard is doing it again, and this time they’ve added something new: full NPC customization. The Sporebearer Fungal Strider, datamined from the WoW patch 12.1.5 PTR and officially confirmed by Blizzard community manager Randy “Kaivax” Jordan, is a limited-time mount with a base price of 5 million gold that can climb all the way to 7 million gold if you want every available vendor. And once the Midnight expansion ends, it’s gone for good. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is the Sporebearer Fungal Strider?

The Sporebearer Fungal Strider is a massive rideable beast — visually impressive enough that Blizzard called it a “magnificent new addition” in their official announcement. What makes it genuinely different from previous gold sink mounts is its customizable NPC passenger system, which is a first for World of Warcraft.

Every mount that carries functional NPCs in WoW history has come with fixed vendors — you get what you get. The Sporebearer Fungal Strider changes that. It launches with two default NPC passengers:

    • Mail Courier — Functions as a mailbox
    • Repair Vendor — For in-the-field gear repairs

But those two slots aren’t locked. You can swap out either or both of the default passengers by visiting Hoshena, an NPC located in the Den in Harandar near the original mount vendor Showena. At any time, at no extra charge beyond the initial purchase, you can rearrange which two NPCs are riding with you. The mount always carries exactly two passengers — you choose which two from your unlocked pool.

    The Full Pricing Breakdown

Here is exactly what everything costs, because the numbers matter:

    • Base mount (Sporebearer Fungal Strider) — 5,000,000 gold. Includes Mail Courier and Repair Vendor.
    • Transmogrifier NPC — 500,000 gold additional
    • Auctioneer NPC — 1,500,000 gold additional
    • Full package (mount + both optional NPCs) — 7,000,000 gold total

The optional NPCs are purchased separately through the same NPC system in Harandar. Blizzard has also confirmed they are considering adding more NPC options in future patches, which means the pool of customization choices could expand beyond the current four options during the Midnight expansion cycle.

There is one important distinction about what’s time-limited and what isn’t: the mount itself can only be purchased until the end of the Midnight expansion. However, once you own the optional NPC unlocks, those remain available indefinitely — you can keep purchasing new NPCs and swapping them on your existing mount even after Midnight ends, as long as you bought the base mount before the deadline.

What Will This Actually Cost in Real Money?

For players who don’t want to grind tens of millions of gold from scratch, the WoW Token conversion is the realistic path — and the numbers are eye-opening.

WoW Tokens cost $20 USD each in the United States and convert to in-game gold at a variable market rate. At the current exchange rate of approximately 238,909 gold per Token, here’s what the math looks like:

    • Base mount only (5 million gold) — approximately 21 Tokens — ~$420 USD
    • Full package (7 million gold) — approximately 29-30 Tokens — ~$580-600 USD

In Europe, Tokens cost 20 Euros but yield approximately 365,000 gold each, making the conversion slightly more efficient in gold terms per real-money spend — though the total still lands in a similar ballpark for the full package.

To be clear: this is not a cash shop mount. There is no direct real-money purchase option for the Sporebearer Fungal Strider. The Token path is an indirect one — you buy Tokens for game time, then sell those Tokens to other players on the in-game market in exchange for gold. Whether that distinction feels meaningful is a matter of personal perspective, but the practical ceiling is real: wanting the fully unlocked mount via Tokens means spending somewhere in the $420-$600 range in USD.

The Brutosaur Precedent — And Why Players Are Skeptical

The elephant in the room for any expensive WoW gold sink mount is the Mighty Caravan Brutosaur from Battle for Azeroth. That mount originally sold for 5 million gold in-game and was marketed as a limited-time item that would disappear when BFA ended. Blizzard kept that promise — it was removed from the gold vendor — but then later brought it back to the real-money Blizzard Shop as the Trader’s Gilded Brutosaur for $90 USD.

That precedent has made WoW players permanently suspicious of any “limited time, gold only” mount. The worry isn’t irrational: if the Sporebearer Fungal Strider follows the same pattern, players who spent 5-7 million gold could eventually see the same mount offered for a fraction of the price in the cash shop during a future expansion.

Blizzard has not commented on whether a similar cash shop return is planned for the Sporebearer Fungal Strider, and there’s no guarantee it will happen. But the pattern has been set, and the community memory is long.

What Else Is in Patch 12.1.5?

The Sporebearer Fungal Strider is the most talked-about addition, but Patch 12.1.5 is a substantial content drop beyond just the mount. The PTR opened on September 3, 2026, with an autumn release window on Blizzard’s published schedule. Here’s what’s confirmed for the patch:

    The Promise of Tomorrow Campaign

A new story campaign continuing the Midnight expansion’s narrative. The patch marks a meaningful story progression point for players following WoW’s current storyline in the Midnight setting.

    The Unbinding of Kith’ix Raid

A single-boss raid against Kith’ix, the C’Thraxxi general, fought alongside Lady Liadrin. This follows the same structural role as Sporefall did during Patch 12.0.7 — a focused, narrative-driven raid encounter that extends the current campaign rather than opening an entirely new tier. Single-boss raids have become a reliable way for Blizzard to keep the raiding community engaged between major tier releases.

    Labyrinths

A new dungeon-style activity called Labyrinths arrives in 12.1.5, details of which are still emerging from the PTR. Early coverage describes them as a fresh format for endgame engagement alongside the existing Mythic+ ecosystem.

    Class and Meta Implications

Patch 12.1 (Curse of Ula’tek) already delivered significant class spec nerfs that reshuffled the meta, and what the current spec rankings look like going into 12.1.5 remains to be seen. Blizzard has been willing to make significant balance adjustments across the Midnight cycle, and the PTR will likely surface additional tuning before the patch goes live.

    Is the Mount Worth It?

This comes down entirely to how you use the game and what the NPC access actually means for your playstyle.

Having a functional Auctioneer on your mount is genuinely useful for serious gold makers and traders. Being able to summon an Auction House access point anywhere in the world — while in the middle of a farming session, between pulls in a dungeon, or out in the open world — has real practical value for players who actively engage with the WoW economy. The same applies to the Transmogrifier for players deep into cosmetic collection and transmog grinding.

The Repair Vendor and Mailbox that come standard are useful for literally everyone who plays. Having both on-demand in the open world or between dungeon pulls is a genuine quality of life improvement.

Whether all of that is worth 5-7 million gold is the question only your bank account — in-game or real — can answer. For most players, the answer is almost certainly no. This is explicitly a gold sink, which means its design purpose is to drain gold from the most wealthy players in the economy to reduce inflation. It is not intended to be accessible to the average WoW subscriber, and the price reflects that intent.

For collectors, AH traders, and players who have accumulated significant gold reserves over years of play, the limited-time availability is the real pressure point. Once Midnight ends, the base mount is gone. The NPC unlocks can still be purchased afterward if you already own the mount, but if you don’t own it by the expansion’s end, that’s it. Whether the Brutosaur precedent eventually gives the mount a second life in the cash shop is a question only future-Blizzard can answer.

WoW players keeping an eye on premium gaming items and the real-money implications of in-game economies might also find the broader discussion around what spending money means in gaming interesting — from Fortnite’s FF Resonance-style crossover moments to how studios price their most exclusive items. The Sporebearer Fungal Strider lands squarely in that conversation.
