Xbox Exec Gives New Official Statement on Future Exclusive Games

Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty has come out with a clear statement on where the company stands on console exclusives, and the message is pretty direct: there needs to be a reason to buy an Xbox. The comments came in the wake of the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase and the massive restructuring that followed in July, and they signal a real shift in how Xbox is thinking about its platform identity going forward.

What Matt Booty Actually Said About Xbox Exclusives

Speaking in an interview with GamesRadar+ following the Xbox Games Showcase, Booty said that console exclusives are about giving players a reason to invest in the platform — both as a reward for people who have already been with Xbox for a long time, and as a compelling reason for new buyers to pick up an Xbox console. He was direct about the logic behind it: you have to give people something they can only get on your hardware.

Booty acknowledged that exclusivity will still be handled on a case-by-case basis, and he made clear that live-service games and major multiplayer titles like Call of Duty will continue to release across all platforms. But for single-player experiences from Xbox Game Studios, Booty said being Xbox-exclusive is a solid general rule of thumb — not an absolute, but the kind of direction fans should broadly expect going forward.

One key thing he confirmed is that Xbox will no longer announce platform availability before a release date is locked in. From this point on, when an Xbox Game Studios project gets a release date, the platforms it’s coming to will be confirmed at that same time. That’s a deliberate move to avoid the confusion and backtracking that has followed previous platform strategy announcements.

Booty also addressed the scale of what Xbox is working with — noting that with over 20 gaming franchises that have each earned more than a billion dollars in revenue, Xbox Game Studios has to make careful decisions about what gets the exclusive treatment. Not everything can or should be exclusive, but the choices need to be intentional.

Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution Confirmed as Permanent Exclusives

The two games confirmed as Xbox console exclusives coming out of the June 2026 showcase are Gears of War: E-Day, set to launch on October 6, 2026, and Clockwork Revolution, currently targeting 2027. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball followed up Booty’s comments by making something explicit that some fans had questioned — these are not timed exclusives. Neither Gears of War: E-Day nor Clockwork Revolution will appear on PS5, ever.

Ball also confirmed that more first-party Xbox exclusive titles are in the pipeline beyond these two, though no specific games were named. The pattern Booty laid out — one signature exclusive per year — suggests 2026 slots to Gears and 2027 to Clockwork Revolution, with future years still to be filled as announcements come.

What’s Still Coming to PS5 Despite the Exclusivity Push

The shift toward exclusives doesn’t mean Xbox is walking away from PlayStation entirely. Booty and Ball were clear that games already announced for multiplatform release will honor those commitments. That means Halo: Campaign Evolved is still landing on PS5 on July 28, 2026 — marking the first mainline Halo title ever to release on a PlayStation console. Halo: Campaign Evolved went gold on July 13, just under two weeks ahead of its release date. A port of Forza Horizon 6 is also planned for PS5 later in the year.

Fable is another title confirmed to remain multiplatform, coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S when it launches in 2027. So the picture isn’t pure exclusivity across the board — it’s a selective approach where the biggest solo narrative experiences from certain franchises get the exclusive treatment, while broad-audience titles and live-service games stay cross-platform.

The Xbox Restructuring Behind These Decisions

Booty’s comments on exclusives didn’t come in a vacuum. In early July 2026, Xbox went through what CEO Asha Sharma described as the most significant restructure in Xbox history. The company announced approximately 3,200 job cuts throughout fiscal year 2027, with 1,600 roles eliminated immediately. Four studios left the Xbox umbrella as part of that announcement: Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games went independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs were sold to undisclosed buyers.

In her letter to Xbox staff, Sharma was direct about the state of the business, stating that profit margins were running far below comparable platform and publishing businesses. The message was that things needed to change structurally, not just strategically. The exclusivity pivot and the restructure are connected — Xbox needs a stronger hardware value proposition, and exclusive games are a core part of making that argument to consumers.

What About The Elder Scrolls 6 and Other Major Bethesda IPs?

The big question hanging over all of this is where franchises like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout end up. Neither has been confirmed as a console exclusive, which is notable given that both franchises have been multiplatform for over two decades. Booty didn’t give a clear answer on those titles, pointing to the case-by-case approach and the fact that platform availability won’t be confirmed until a release date is set.

Todd Howard has acknowledged that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long way off, so there’s time for the strategy to evolve further before that game becomes a pressing question. But with Xbox now openly stating that exclusives are important and that single-player games are the strongest candidates for the exclusive treatment, the writing on the wall has shifted considerably from where it stood a couple of years ago.

Xbox Project Helix and Why Exclusives Matter More Now

Part of what gives these exclusivity decisions extra weight is Project Helix — Microsoft’s next-gen console currently in development, expected to launch around 2028. Project Helix is shaping up to be a hybrid console-PC system powered by a custom AMD chip, supporting Xbox console games, PC storefronts like Steam, and backward compatibility across four console generations.

With a next-gen console on the horizon, the pressure to build a compelling exclusive software lineup is real. The games that ship between now and Project Helix’s launch — including Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution — are essentially building the argument for why someone should be on the Xbox platform when the new hardware arrives. Booty’s comments make clear that Xbox understands this, and that the exclusivity decisions being made now are part of a longer play toward that hardware launch.

There’s plenty more happening in gaming this week — the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 open beta dates are officially confirmed for late August, and Borderlands Dead ECHOs dropped as a free audio drama on Spotify and Apple Podcasts — both worth checking out if you’re keeping up with what’s moving in the space right now.
