Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition Console and Controller Officially Revealed

    By Krushna Vasudeva · June 8, 2026 · 7 min read

Microsoft dropped a piece of hardware at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 that a lot of fans have been wanting for years. The Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition is real, it’s translucent green, and it’s launching in November 2026 to celebrate 25 years of Xbox. Alongside it is a matching Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition — and both are dripping in nostalgia for anyone who’s been with the brand since day one.

Before getting into the details, one important clarification: the Xbox Series X25 is not the next generation of Xbox consoles. That would be Xbox Project Helix, which is widely expected to arrive in 2027. The X25 is a celebratory special edition of the existing Xbox Series X — same hardware inside, completely new look on the outside. If you were hoping for a next-gen hardware reveal, that’s not this. But if you’ve been wanting a green, see-through Xbox since the original console era, this is exactly that.

Why November 2026 — The 25th Anniversary Connection

The name makes the math obvious: Xbox launched its original console on November 21, 2001 in North America. 2001 + 25 = 2026. The X25 is timed directly to that original launch date, making November 2026 the natural window for the hardware drop.

Microsoft is also connecting the console to Halo: Campaign Evolved — the full remake of Halo: Combat Evolved that’s launching this year. The X25 reveal trailer featured Campaign Evolved footage, and the two are being positioned as the twin anchors of Xbox’s anniversary celebration — one on the software side, one on the hardware side. If you’re buying an X25 to mark the occasion, Microsoft clearly wants Halo: Campaign Evolved to be the game you’re playing when you power it on for the first time and watch that green X light up.

Xbox Series X25 Console — Design Details

The X25 is the first time the Xbox Series X has ever shipped with a see-through shell, and it looks exactly like the kind of thing that should have happened years ago. Here’s what Microsoft confirmed:

    • Translucent “OG Green” chassis — The same iconic green from the original 2001 Xbox, now in a see-through finish that lets you look into the guts of the console.
    • Green X startup light — When you power the console on, the X logo lights up green. That’s a direct callback to the original Xbox boot-up experience, and it’s the kind of detail that actually means something to long-time fans.
    • Xbox 25th Anniversary logo on the front panel.
    • 1TB NVMe SSD storage — Same as the standard Xbox Series X.
    • Identical internal hardware — Custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, 12-teraflop GPU, 16GB RAM. No spec bump here — you’re paying for the design, not a performance upgrade.

The console is limited edition and will only be available in select markets. Microsoft hasn’t announced pre-order availability or pricing yet — more on that below.

Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition — Design Details

The controller is getting just as much attention as the console, and honestly it might be the more accessible purchase for people who don’t need a new console but want a piece of the anniversary hardware. Confirmed details:

    • Translucent OG Green finish — Same see-through design as the console.
    • See-through back case and battery door — For the first time on any Xbox controller, you can see the classic Xbox logo through the transparent battery door.
    • Original ABXY button colors — The colored face buttons are back. Green A, red B, yellow Y, blue X — the original color scheme that older Xbox fans remember before Microsoft moved to a monochrome button design.
    • Black and white bumpers — A direct nod to the classic “Duke” controller’s black and white buttons from the original Xbox era.
    • Green Xbox button — Calling back to the original green X logo from the brand’s earliest days.

The controller is launching in October 2026 — a month ahead of the console — and will be available separately as well as bundled with the console in the X25 collection. If you just want the controller without committing to a full console purchase, that’s the route.

Pricing — Not Confirmed Yet, Here’s Why

Microsoft didn’t announce pricing during the showcase, which is notable. The current global hardware pricing environment has been rough — Xbox Series X consoles already saw price increases in 2025 alongside most other gaming hardware, driven by ongoing supply chain and macroeconomic pressures. Microsoft’s official statement said they’ll have more to share on pricing and pre-order availability at select retailers “soon.”

The honest read here is that they’re managing expectations carefully given that this limited edition will almost certainly carry a premium over the standard Series X price. Announcing a number at the showcase would have stepped on the game reveals, and it gives them room to finalize retail positioning before pre-orders open. Keep an eye out — pre-order announcements should be coming within the next few months.

This Is Not the Next Xbox — What Is Project Helix?

Worth spelling out clearly for anyone seeing the X25 and wondering if this is the next generation: it isn’t. Xbox Project Helix is the next-gen Xbox platform, and it’s widely reported to be targeting a 2027 release. The X25 occupying the November 2026 window actually reinforces that Project Helix is unlikely to arrive before 2027 at the earliest — Microsoft isn’t going to cannibalize an anniversary hardware drop with a next-gen launch just a couple of months later.

So if you’re holding out for genuinely new Xbox hardware with a meaningful spec upgrade, the wait continues. The X25 is a collector’s item for the anniversary, not a performance play.

    The Bigger Rebranding Picture

The X25 doesn’t exist in isolation — it’s part of a broader rebranding effort that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has been steering since taking over the role. The official brand name is now styled as “XBOX” in all-caps. There’s a new startup sound that echoes the classic Xbox boot-up chime people remember from the original era. And the new green Xbox logo that was teased earlier this year — the one that had everyone asking questions — now makes complete sense as the X25 reveal connects all the dots.

The translucent green hardware is the physical, tangible expression of that whole direction. Xbox spent years going minimalist and monochrome, and the X25 is a deliberate statement that they know what made the brand beloved in the first place, and they’re not afraid to lean back into it.

Should You Buy the Xbox Series X25?

If you’re a long-time Xbox fan who remembers the original console — the big black brick with the green X — the X25 is going to hit differently than any standard hardware release. The translucent OG Green, the colored face buttons on the controller, the green startup light, the Duke controller bumper callbacks — every single one of those design choices was made specifically for you.

If you’re purely a performance buyer, there’s nothing here that the standard Xbox Series X doesn’t already give you. The internals are identical. But that’s also fine — this was never meant to be a spec upgrade. It’s a 25th anniversary collector’s piece, and it delivers exactly what it set out to be.

Pricing and pre-order details are coming soon. Given this is limited edition, it’s worth acting fast once pre-orders open — special edition Xbox hardware tends to move quickly and the X25 design is one people have been asking for since the translucent console era ended in the mid-2000s.
