Beautiful Light: New PvPvPvE Extraction Shooter Hits Steam Early Access in December 2026

    • Key Takeaway: Beautiful Light is a PvPvPvE tactical horror extraction shooter from Swiss indie studio Deep Worlds SA, confirmed for Steam and Epic Games Store Early Access in December 2026.
    • The game’s standout mechanic lets a group of players join matches as playable Anomalies — alien-like monsters whose job is to hunt down and eat operators to stop them from extracting.
    • Up to 24 players share each map: six squads of three operators competing for a single artifact, plus up to six player-controlled Anomalies.
    • The game features a fully diegetic HUD through a forearm PDA, immersive audio design, and hardcore tactical FPS mechanics including peek-and-lean, gas masks, and night vision.
    • Beautiful Light has already racked up over 700,000 wishlists on Steam — significant traction for an indie title with no release date yet confirmed.
    • Early Access pricing is set at €39.99, with an exact December release date still to be confirmed by the studio.

The extraction shooter space has become genuinely competitive. Between Escape from Tarkov, ARC Raiders, and a steady stream of new entries, standing out takes more than solid gunplay and a loot loop. Beautiful Light is making a real argument for what sets it apart, and after over 700,000 Steam wishlists, it’s clearly got people paying attention. The game is heading into Early Access in December 2026 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and its concept — part tactical extraction shooter, part asymmetric horror game — is one of the more distinctive pitches the genre has seen in a while.

It’s being developed and published by Deep Worlds SA, a small indie studio led by CEO Eric “Aherys” Rajot, who previously competed as a professional Rainbow Six: Siege eSports player. That background shows up clearly in Beautiful Light’s design — it’s clearly built by someone who understands competitive tactical FPS mechanics from the inside.

    What Beautiful Light Actually Is

At its core, Beautiful Light is a PvPvPvE extraction shooter. That fourth letter isn’t a typo — the game is asymmetric in a way that goes beyond the standard format. Most extraction shooters pit your team against other squads and environmental hazards. Beautiful Light does that, but it adds a fourth faction: player-controlled Anomalies.

Each match runs as a 24-player lobby: six squads of three operators all competing to secure and extract a single artifact, plus six players who’ve joined specifically to play as Anomalies — monstrous, alien-like creatures whose only job is to hunt down operators and stop them from leaving with the goods. As an Anomaly, you’re not raiding for gear or completing objectives. You’re eating people. The goal is to hunt, kill, and devour as many operators as possible before extraction.

That asymmetric structure is directly comparable to what Dead by Daylight does in the horror survival genre, except here it’s layered on top of a full tactical extraction shooter rather than a hide-and-seek formula. The result is a match structure where the threat is never constant or predictable — you might be engaging a rival squad for an artifact and suddenly realize an Anomaly is closing in behind you, or holding a position waiting for extraction while something considerably worse than another PMC starts circling the perimeter.

The Artifact Loop and What Makes Each Raid Unique

The central objective on every map is a single artifact — a mythical, supernatural object that reportedly carries unique properties capable of affecting gameplay. That means teams holding the artifact don’t just have an objective marker; they potentially have an in-game advantage too, which makes it a priority target from both angles. Other squads will be hunting the artifact-holder, which creates a natural second-tier conflict on top of the standard PvP tensions.

Each mission is called a raid, and the loop follows the familiar extraction structure: drop into the intervention area, gear up and work with your squad, locate the artifact (or complete side quests), then call in the extraction helicopter and escape. Death means losing everything you brought in — no safety net, no partial recovery. That’s standard extraction shooter stakes, but the presence of player-controlled Anomalies running in the same lobby makes every phase of the loop genuinely unpredictable in a way most games in the genre don’t manage.

The maps themselves are built around destroyed and overgrown buildings, dense forests, and research labs — a post-apocalyptic setting that leans heavily into oppressive atmosphere rather than standard military aesthetics. The environmental design sounds closer to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. territory than anything else, which isn’t a surprise given that the broader inspiration pool for Beautiful Light seems to be ARC Raiders meets STALKER with a Dead by Daylight layer on top.

    Tactical Mechanics and Immersion Design

On the operator side, Beautiful Light is built around hardcore tactical FPS mechanics. Players can peek and lean left or right — a precision aiming system similar to what Rainbow Six Siege uses — and there’s a heavy emphasis on gadgetry that actually matters: night vision devices, gas masks, and tactical lights all need to be deployed strategically rather than just swapped in passively.

The immersion focus extends to the HUD design. Rather than floating UI elements overlaid on the screen, Beautiful Light uses a fully diegetic HUD — everything the player sees is represented as in-world information accessed through a forearm PDA, directly inspired by military interface design. It’s the same concept as Fallout’s Pip-Boy but built for a hardcore tactical shooter environment, meaning you’re literally looking at your arm to check your inventory, status, and map. Combined with the audio design — ambient breathing, realistic footsteps, heartbeats, and a gas mask audio filter — the game is clearly going for a genuinely oppressive, immersive atmosphere rather than a clean competitive aesthetic.

Gun customization is also a significant part of the progression system, with over 20 weapons confirmed for the Early Access launch alongside RPG-style skill trees for PMC operators, three traders, and an advanced inventory system.

What’s Coming at Early Access Launch

Deep Worlds has been upfront about what the Early Access version will and won’t include. The confirmed Early Access launch content is:

    • Two maps
    • One game mode (the asymmetric Raid mode)
    • One playable Anomaly type
    • Four AI Anomalies for the PvE layer
    • More than 20 weapons
    • PMC Progression Skill Tree
    • Three Traders
    • Full inventory system and progression

The studio has been clear that the Early Access build is a work in progress and hasn’t committed to a post-EA roadmap in detail, specifically to avoid making promises they can’t keep. What they have said is that the Early Access phase is expected to last less than three years — which is a wide window but at least sets an expectation that this isn’t a game that will sit in perpetual early access indefinitely.

Pricing is set at €39.99 for Early Access. An exact December launch date hasn’t been nailed down yet — after Gamescom 2026, the studio flagged that they’re still finalizing the specific date and factoring in other major December releases. The Steam and Epic Games Store listings still show December 2026 as the target window.

An Indie Studio With Real Momentum

What’s striking about Beautiful Light’s pre-launch position is the 700,000+ Steam wishlists it’s accumulated without a confirmed release date or any major publisher behind it. Deep Worlds SA is a small, independent studio self-publishing the game, and that wishlist number puts it well ahead of where most indie multiplayer titles are at this stage. The combination of the asymmetric hook, the immersive design language, and the horror atmosphere seems to have found an audience that isn’t being fully served by the current extraction shooter landscape.

Whether it can convert that wishlist momentum into a healthy active player base at Early Access launch is the real question — extraction shooters live and die by population, and being compelling in concept is only half the battle. But the foundation looks genuinely different from what else is in the genre right now, and that’s a better starting point than most.
