Crimson Desert Best Early Build: Armor, Weapons, Skills, and Accessories for Kliff
TL;DR
- Buy the full Canta Plate Armor from Rhett Equipment Shop early — best Attack and Defense combo for the price
- Upgrade to the Sword of the Lord after beating Kailok the Hornsplitter at the end of Chapter 2
- Keep the Grey Wolf Bow and Shield — they’re solid and don’t need replacing early
- Fill all accessory slots (1 necklace, 2 rings, 2 earrings) ASAP for free stat bonuses
- Prioritize Health and Stamina skills first, then Armed Combat, Nature’s Echo, and Keen Senses
Kliff is your main character in Crimson Desert, and building him right from the start makes a huge difference. The early game can punish you hard if your stats are too low. Bosses hit like a truck and fights get tight fast.
The good news? You don’t need to grind for hours to get a solid early build. A few smart choices in armor, weapons, and skills will carry you through the opening chapters with confidence. Here’s exactly what to do.
Best Early Armor: Canta Plate Armor

The first thing you should do at the start of the game is collect around 10 to 15 silver coins and head to Rhett Equipment Shop. It’s located in the middle of Hernand city.
There, buy the full Canta Plate Armor set.
Plate armor is the best choice for Attack and Defense stats in the early game. Yes, you lose some movement speed and attack speed. But when your stats are low, every point of Attack and Defense counts. That trade-off is absolutely worth it at this stage.
It won’t be ideal in the late game, but for your first few chapters, nothing beats it.
Best Early Weapons
Primary: Sword of the Wolf (Starting Weapon)
You start with the Sword of the Wolf. It’s a reliable weapon. There’s no rush to replace it right away, so don’t stress about swapping it out early.
Upgrade: Sword of the Lord (End of Chapter 2)
Once you reach the end of Chapter 2, go get the Sword of the Lord. To unlock it, you need to beat Kailok the Hornsplitter. It’s a solid fight, but the reward is worth it.
The Sword of the Lord gives Kliff his first elemental attack — Wind Slash. It’s an AoE attack that hits multiple enemies at once. That’s a big upgrade from the Sword of the Wolf and will make mob clearing much easier.
Later, when Kliff meets the first witch, you can actually remove the Wind Slash attack from the Sword of the Lord and equip it to any weapon you want. That gives you a lot of flexibility going forward.
If you want to know more about what to do after visiting the witch, check out the Witch’s Abyss Gears guide.

Secondary: Warspike Spear
Many players also recommend keeping a Warspike Spear as a secondary weapon. Pair it with the Quick Swap skill to instantly switch to it mid-fight after staggering an enemy. It deals heavier burst damage and gives you a strong punish window.
Bow and Shield: Grey Wolf (Keep These)
The Grey Wolf Bow and Grey Wolf Wooden Shield are fine to hold on to. They have similar stats to almost every other bow and shield available early in the game. Don’t waste silver swapping them out.
Side Weapon: Balton Longsword or Any Two-Handed Weapon
For your two-handed side weapon slot, the Balton Longsword works well. Any two-handed weapon you find can work here too. Experiment with what feels best for your playstyle.
If you’re interested in learning how to dual wield, there’s a dedicated guide for that too.

Best Early Accessories
Accessories give you Health, Stamina, and Spirit regeneration. These stats matter a lot in combat. Fill your slots as soon as possible.
Here’s the accessory setup for early Kliff:
- 1 Necklace
- 2 Rings
- 2 Earrings
Most accessories at this stage share the same stats. So don’t overthink it. Just fill every empty slot you have. Any accessory is better than an empty slot.
Later in the game, you’ll start finding special accessories with magical effects — like a necklace that can change the weather. But for now, just focus on having all five slots filled.
Best Early Skills to Level Up
This is where a lot of players go wrong. They rush to unlock flashy new attacks and ignore the basics. Don’t do that.
Start With: Health and Stamina
Put your first several Abyss Artifacts into increasing Kliff’s Health and Stamina. Health keeps you alive longer in tough fights. Stamina lets you dodge and block more often, which are essential mechanics. Early bosses deal serious damage. Even a small health boost can be the difference between dying and surviving.
Alternate between the two as you unlock early Abyss Artifacts. Don’t neglect either one.

Core Combat Skills to Unlock
Once your Health and Stamina feel solid, start putting points into these skills:
Armed Combat — This is the foundation of all weapon-based combos. It increases base attack damage and unlocks perks like Evasive Slash. If you’re running Sword and Shield, this should be one of your first combat skill unlocks.
Keen Senses — This unlocks Counter, Parry, and Perfect Dodge. It’s arguably the most important skill in Kliff’s entire tree. Level it up as soon as you can. At minimum, get it to level 2 early.
Nature’s Echo — This replicates your attacks with an echo. When you stab, you effectively stab twice. It adds passive damage without requiring extra effort. Max this out early — it’s one of the strongest early skills in the game.
Forward Slash — Your heavy attack. Simple but effective. Pair it with Nature’s Echo and it hits twice per swing.
Clothesline — A useful combat move that can be learned by observing enemies. Save your Abyss Artifacts and watch for the observe mechanic to pick this up for free.
Quick Swap — If you’re using a secondary spear, this skill lets you instantly switch weapons mid-fight. Very powerful for burst damage on staggered enemies.
Force Palm — Creates spacing between you and enemies, and sets up follow-up heavy attacks. Great for managing dangerous situations.

Quick Tip: Use Food for Healing
Don’t sleep on food. Cooking and using healing items during tough fights can save your run. Check out our guide on how to cook the best healing food in Crimson Desert to always have a supply ready before big fights.
How to Upgrade Your Gear as You Progress
Once you’re through the early chapters, start looking at upgrading your weapons and armor to keep up with tougher enemies. The early gear will only take you so far.

Final Thoughts
The best early build in Crimson Desert isn’t complicated. Buy the Canta Plate Armor. Upgrade to the Sword of the Lord after Chapter 2. Fill your accessory slots. Put your first Abyss Artifacts into Health and Stamina, then build into Armed Combat and Nature’s Echo.
This setup keeps Kliff alive, hits hard, and doesn’t require you to grind endlessly before it starts working.
