TL;DR
- Witches are special vendors in Crimson Desert who install, remove, and craft Abyss Gears — stat-boosting mods for your weapons and armor.
- Sylvia is the first Witch, added via Day 1 patch. She’s found north of Hernand City in Shadow’s Whisper Cave — no story quest required.
- Elowen is the main story Witch, unlocked in Chapter 5 after rescuing her from bandits in the Witchwoods.
- There are five Witches total across Pywel, each unlocked through different methods.
- Installing and extracting Abyss Gears is free. Creating new sockets costs Silver (5 to 100+).
- Don’t sell gear with Abyss Gears still slotted in. Extract them first.
- The tower next to Elowen’s house has a hidden treasure chest at the top — worth grabbing.
One of the most common frustrations in early Crimson Desert is collecting Abyss Gears and having no idea how to use them. Every time you try, the game tells you to find a Witch — but there’s no quest marker pointing to one.
This guide covers every Witch in Pywel, how to unlock each one, what services they offer, and how to actually use the Abyss Gear system from start to finish.

What Are Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert?
Abyss Gears (also called Abyss Cores) are mods you slot into your weapons and armor to add extra stats and abilities on top of their base stats. They’re the primary way to customize your gear for specific builds and playstyles.
Examples of what Abyss Gears can do:
- Add attack damage or attack speed
- Provide elemental resistance (like Frostward for Ice Resistance — see our frost protection guide)
- Add unique combat abilities or buffs
- Transfer special traits from boss weapons onto your own gear
You earn Abyss Gears by completing Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges out in the world. For a full breakdown of how those work, check our guide on how to open Sealed Abyss Artifacts in Crimson Desert.
The catch: you can’t socket them yourself. You need a Witch to do it.
All Witches in Crimson Desert
There are five Witches in Pywel. Here’s a quick overview before the full breakdowns:
| Witch | Location | How to Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Sylvia (Hermit Witch) | Shadow’s Whisper Cave, north of Hernand | Go directly — no quest needed (Day 1 patch) |
| Elowen (Witch of Wisdom) | The Witchwoods, west of Hernand Highlands | Main story — Chapter 5, Missing Seal quest |
| Witch of Kindness | Snowy Pailune region | Find her brazier and light it to start her quest |
| Lyselia (Witch of Strength) | Beighen (fake form), Serpent Marsh (true form) | Help person on ruined bridge in Chapter 7 area |
| Fifth Witch (Hidden) | Unlocked last | Complete all Spires and Sanctums for the other Witches |
Witch 1 — Sylvia, the Hermit Witch
Location: Shadow’s Whisper Cave, north of Hernand City How to unlock: Go directly — no quest required

Sylvia was added to Crimson Desert in the Day 1 patch specifically because players were getting stuck with Abyss Gears and no way to use them. She’s the easiest Witch to access and requires nothing more than finding her cave.
How to find her:
- Head north from Hernand City along the main road.
- Before you hit the river, turn northwest.
- Hug the rock walls on your left — you’ll find a narrow opening into Shadow’s Whisper Cave.
- Head inside and speak with Sylvia.
Before you leave:
- Pick up the Palmar Pill recipe inside the cave — it’s sitting nearby and easy to miss. For more on Palmar Pills, see our how to get and use Palmar Pills in Crimson Desert guide.
- Interact with the Abyss Nexus just outside the cave to unlock a fast travel point here.
Services Sylvia offers:
- Embed Abyss Gears — install Abyss Gears into unlocked sockets on your equipment
- Extract Abyss Gears — remove Abyss Gears from equipment and return them to your inventory
- Create Socket — unlock the chained socket slots on your equipment so you can mod them

Witch 2 — Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom
Location: The Witchwoods, west of Hernand Highlands / north of Alfonso Estate How to unlock: Chapter 5 main story — Missing Seal quest
Elowen is the Witch you’ll meet as part of the main campaign. She becomes your primary Witch for most of the game and offers the most complete set of Abyss Gear services.
A note from GameSpot: It may be possible to encounter Elowen’s quest hint as early as the end of Chapter 1. If you receive information about the Witchwoods at that point, you can head there early and meet her ahead of the Chapter 5 trigger.
How to unlock her — step by step:
- After the first boss fight in Chapter 5, a white bird will land on Kliff’s shoulder. Allow it to sit and take the letter it carries.
- Read the letter in your inventory to unlock the Missing Seal quest.
- Follow the quest marker to a small house southeast of The Witchwoods. You’ll hear a woman screaming but the door is locked and the area is blocked by thorns.
- Look up — there’s a hole in the roof. Jump up and enter through there.
- Inside, you’ll find a tied-up woman. Free her. She reveals herself as Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom.
- She marks her actual house on your map — it’s located north of The Witchwoods, surrounded by red flowers and a fountain.
- Travel to the marked location, activate the nearby Abyss Nexus fast travel point, and enter to speak with Elowen.
Don’t miss: The tower next to Elowen’s house has a treasure chest at the very top. Jump to the closed window to access it. Easy to walk past without noticing.
Elowen also has a Cauldron inside her house, making it the best spot in the Hernand region for crafting alchemy recipes as well.
Services Elowen offers (all of Sylvia’s, plus):
- Craft Abyss Gears — craft Abyss Gears from recipes you’ve collected
- Buy — purchase Abyss Gear recipes and Abyss Artifacts to spend on skill tree nodes
- Sell — sell unwanted Abyss Gears and other items
After unlocking Elowen, she’ll ask you to cleanse four Sanctums in the Hernand region to complete her questline. Each Sanctum you cleanse rewards you with powerful Kuku weapon blueprints and Elowen will appear to share lore about each location. Once all four are done, return to the Witchwoods to claim your final reward from her — though the full reward is only available after meeting all Witches.
Witch 3 — Witch of Kindness
Location: Pailune (snowy region) How to unlock: Find her brazier and light it
The Witch of Kindness is in the colder Pailune region and won’t appear through the main story. You have to find her yourself.
To start her quest chain, locate the brazier in front of her location and light it. This act of keeping her warm triggers her questline and eventually unlocks her services.
Since she’s in a cold region, make sure you’re protected against Ice Buildup before heading to Pailune. Our frost protection and Ice Resistance guide has everything you need to prepare.
Witch 4 — Lyselia, the Witch of Strength
Location: Beighen (fake form, Chapter 7 area) → Serpent Marsh (true form, Chapter 9 area) How to unlock: Help an NPC hanging off a ruined bridge in Beighen
Lyselia is split across two locations. You’ll encounter her fake form in Beighen during Chapter 7. Look for a person hanging off a ruined bridge — help them and it activates Lyselia’s questline, which will eventually direct you to her true form far south in the Serpent Marsh.
You don’t need to rush to the Serpent Marsh. You’ll pass through that area naturally during Chapter 9 anyway, so Lyselia can be unlocked as part of your normal story progression.
Witch 5 — The Hidden Fifth Witch
How to unlock: Complete all Spires and Sanctums for the other four Witches
The fifth and final Witch doesn’t appear until you’ve finished the Spires and Sanctums associated with every other Witch in Pywel. Once all of those are complete, the final Witch will appear. This meeting is tied directly to the main narrative, so you’ll reach her through natural story progression once the prerequisites are met.
How to Use Abyss Gears — Step by Step
Here’s the full process from receiving your first Abyss Gear to having it embedded in your equipment:

Step 1 — Don’t Sell or Discard Your Abyss Gears
Before anything else: hold onto every Abyss Gear you collect, even if you can’t use them yet. Many players accidentally sell them before finding their first Witch. They’re too valuable to lose.
Step 2 — Find a Witch (Sylvia is Fastest)
Head to Sylvia’s cave north of Hernand. She’s the quickest Witch to access and handles all the core Abyss Gear functions you’ll need early on.
Step 3 — Create a Socket
Select “Create Socket” from Sylvia’s or Elowen’s menu. This opens up the chained socket slots on a piece of equipment.
Cost varies: as low as 5 Silver for basic gear, up to 100+ Silver for high-tier armor or weapons. Plan which Abyss Gear you want on which piece before spending Silver — unlocking sockets you don’t need wastes money early on.
Step 4 — Embed Your Abyss Gear
Once a socket is created, select “Embed Abyss Gears” and install your chosen Abyss Gear into the open slot. This is free.
Your equipment now carries the Abyss Gear’s buff on top of its default stats.
Step 5 — Extract When Needed
If you want to move an Abyss Gear to different equipment, use “Extract Abyss Gears”. This is also free and returns the gear to your inventory unharmed.
Critical warning: If you sell a piece of equipment with Abyss Gears still embedded in it, you risk losing those gears permanently. Always extract first before selling anything.
This also applies to gear you find in the world. Boss weapons and enemy drops sometimes come with powerful Abyss Gears pre-installed. Extract those before discarding the base item.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Abyss Gears
Match gears to your playstyle. If you’re building Kliff around stamina-heavy combat, stack Abyss Gears that reduce stamina consumption or boost recovery. If you’re focusing on elemental attacks, look for gears that amplify those effects. For build advice, our how to respec in Crimson Desert guide covers how to realign your skill tree if your build isn’t working.
Set up fast travel to your nearest Witch. You’ll be visiting Witches regularly throughout the game as you collect new Abyss Gears. Activate the Abyss Nexus at Sylvia’s cave and at Elowen’s house as soon as you unlock them. For a full overview of fast travel, see how to fast travel in Crimson Desert.
Check boss weapon drops for extractable gears. Enemies and bosses sometimes drop weapons with rare Abyss Gears already embedded. Always inspect drops before selling. Extract anything good and move it to your main gear.
Unlock Elowen as soon as possible. Her crafting and buying options make her significantly more useful than Sylvia for mid-to-late game progression. The ability to buy Abyss Artifacts directly from her is especially useful for filling gaps in your skill tree — see how to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert for context on how gear and skills interact.
