How to Get Protection Against Frost in Crimson Desert (Ice Resistance Guide)

TL;DR

  • Cold regions in Crimson Desert cause Ice Buildup, draining stamina faster and slowing its recovery.
  • Watch the temperature gauge in the top-right corner of your mini-map — the lower it drops, the worse the effect.
  • Best early armor: Hernandian Noble’s Cloak — costs 19 Contribution Points, gives Ice Resistance Lv. 3.
  • Hidden early option: Plate Gloves of the Fallen Kingdom (waterfall cave west of Hernand City) — free, includes Ice Resistance.
  • Easiest food: Buy Beer or Honey Tea from any Inn. Cook Modest Clear Soup at a bonfire for Ice Resistance Lv. 2.
  • Late game: Slot the Frostward Abyss Core into your armor for up to Ice Resistance Lv. 5.
  • Abyss Core slotting requires unlocking Elowen the Witch in Chapter 3.

Heading into the snowy mountain regions of Pywel without preparing for cold is one of the most punishing mistakes you can make early in Crimson Desert. The Ice Buildup mechanic will eat through your stamina faster than most combat encounters, making climbing, dodging, and sprinting feel painfully sluggish.

The good news is there are several ways to counter it — some available from the very start of the game, and others that come online as you progress. This guide covers every method, ranked from easiest to most advanced.

How Ice Buildup Works in Crimson Desert

As you enter colder regions — mainly the snow-capped mountain areas and certain Abyss paths — a temperature gauge appears in the top-right corner of your mini-map. This bar drops as the temperature gets colder.

The lower the bar, the more severe the debuffs:

  • Stamina regeneration slows significantly
  • Stamina consumption increases
  • At extreme cold, movement and combat become noticeably sluggish

These debuffs stack the longer you stay in the cold without resistance. If you’re trying to explore mountain terrain, complete outdoor Abyss puzzles, or reach distant areas on foot, unprotected Ice Buildup can make the entire experience miserable.

Ice Resistance counters this directly. Each level of Ice Resistance reduces how quickly the buildup affects you. The higher your resistance, the longer you can stay in cold zones without suffering debuffs — or you may avoid the effect entirely at high enough levels.

Understanding how the climate system works is also important outside of cold zones. For more on managing the time of day and environment, see our guide on how to change time of day in Crimson Desert.

Method 1 — Wear Armor with Ice Resistance

Hernandian Noble’s Cloak (Best Early Option)

The easiest dedicated Ice Resistance armor piece in the early game is the Hernandian Noble’s Cloak. It costs 19 Contribution Points and provides Ice Resistance Lv. 3 — enough to comfortably handle the first cold regions you’ll encounter.

You buy it from the Contribution Shop inside Hernand Castle. To afford it, you’ll need to complete a handful of side quests in Hernand City to build up your Contribution Points first.

If you haven’t explored Hernand Castle yet, our guide on how to enter Hernand Castle in Crimson Desert will get you inside quickly.

Plate Gloves of the Fallen Kingdom (Free Hidden Option)

This is the keyword gap most guides skip entirely. The Plate Gloves of the Fallen Kingdom are hidden in a waterfall cave west of Hernand City and can be grabbed for free with zero combat required — as soon as you arrive in the city.

The catch: the cave entrance is blocked by a water current. Only Kliff’s Stab ability pushes through it. Once inside, the gloves are yours. They come pre-loaded with Abyss Cores that include a bonus to Ice Resistance, making them one of the strongest early-game pieces available.

These gloves are worth grabbing before you ever attempt a cold region. They’re an easy pickup that most players miss entirely.

Bolton Plate Armor (General Elemental Resistance)

The Bolton Plate Armor is a full chest piece worn by Hernand City’s elite soldiers. It offers solid elemental resistance across the board — not Ice Resistance specifically, but it contributes to your overall protection in harsh environments. Good transitional gear for the early chapters.

Method 2 — Consume Food and Drinks with Ice Resistance

Food and drinks are the most flexible source of Ice Resistance. You can stock up before entering any cold area and swap them in or out as needed without changing your gear setup.

Drinks to Buy

The easiest option is simply buying drinks from any Inn in Hernand City or other settlements. The best ones for frost protection are:

  • Beer — offers basic Ice Resistance
  • Honey Tea — one of the better tea options for cold resistance

You don’t need to craft these. Just walk into any Inn, open the shop, and stock up before heading north. Keep a stack in your inventory any time you’re planning to explore snowy terrain.

Modest Clear Soup (Crafted)

For a more reliable and repeatable source of Ice Resistance, cook the Modest Clear Soup at any bonfire. This soup gives Ice Resistance Lv. 2 and is the easiest recipe to access at the start of the game.

All the ingredients — meat and basic vegetables — are available from the Grocer and Meat Shop in Hernand City. No gathering runs needed. Just buy the ingredients, find a bonfire, and cook.

Higher-tier soup recipes can push the Ice Resistance level even further, so it’s worth experimenting with recipes as you find new ingredients throughout Pywel.

Method 3 — Slot the Frostward Abyss Core (Best Late-Game Option)

Once you’ve progressed further into Crimson Desert and want maximum frost protection, the Frostward Abyss Core is your best option. At max level — Ice Resistance Lv. 5 — it completely neutralizes cold climate debuffs.

Frostward is earned by completing Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges. You can also find variants of it with higher base levels as you explore deeper into Pywel.

To use Frostward or any other Abyss Core, you need Sockets on your armor piece. Here’s how to unlock that:

  1. Progress to Chapter 3 and complete the Witch of Wisdom faction quest in the Witchwoods.
  2. You’ll rescue a young woman named Elowen, who turns out to be a witch.
  3. After completing the quest, she opens her Witch’s Lair as a vendor.
  4. Visit Elowen and choose “Create Socket” on your armor to add a slot.
  5. Once the socket is created, you can insert the Frostward Core — or swap it out for a different resistance core depending on the region you’re heading into.

Important tip from PC Gamer: If you ever sell Contribution Shop gear back, make sure to remove your Abyss Cores first. Selling socketed gear risks losing the cores permanently.

For a complete breakdown of how to use and open all Abyss Artifact types, see our guide on how to open Sealed Abyss Artifacts in Crimson Desert.

Method 4 — Use Environmental Warmth Sources

This is another detail most guides don’t mention. In certain cold regions — including parts of the Path of Trials Abyss area — you’ll find stone lanterns scattered around the environment. Walking up to one and lighting it provides a temporary warmth buff that counters Ice Buildup while you’re nearby.

This won’t protect you while moving through open terrain, but it’s useful during puzzles or combat encounters in cold Abyss areas where you need to stand your ground.

Which Method Should You Use?

Here’s a quick summary based on where you are in the game:

Game StageBest Option
Early game (Chapters 1–2)Plate Gloves of the Fallen Kingdom (free) + Honey Tea from Inn
After Hernand City side questsHernandian Noble’s Cloak (19 CP) + Modest Clear Soup
After Chapter 3Frostward Abyss Core slotted into your best armor
Any stageStack armor + food together for highest total resistance

Combining armor and food resistance is always the most effective approach. A Noble’s Cloak with Ice Resistance Lv. 3 plus a Modest Soup at Lv. 2 gets you well above what you’ll need for most early-game cold regions.

Cold Regions to Watch Out For in Pywel

Several areas in Crimson Desert will trigger the temperature gauge and start Ice Buildup:

  • Snow-capped mountain regions north and east of Hernand City
  • The Path of Trials — an Abyss puzzle area that also unlocks the Frost elemental skill for Kliff. The cold here is severe, so bring food before entering.
  • Higher elevation areas in Pailune — the temperature gauge activates quickly here

The Path of Trials in particular is worth being prepared for. It’s a multi-part Abyss puzzle with no fast exits. Running out of stamina mid-puzzle due to Ice Buildup is genuinely frustrating.

Building Your Character for Cold Regions

Beyond just Ice Resistance, there are a few other things worth setting up before hitting snowy terrain:

Manage your gear weight. Heavy gear slows you down, which is more punishing when Ice Buildup is already affecting your stamina. Check our guide on how to increase inventory space in Crimson Desert to keep your load optimized.

Upgrade your armor first. Higher-tier armor with Ice Resistance is always more efficient than stacking food buffs alone. See our how to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert guide for the full process.

Have a camp nearby. Setting up a camp near a cold region lets you resupply food and recover quickly between cold-zone runs. Check our how to unlock camp in Crimson Desert guide for setup details.
