Crimson Desert: Man Trapped in a Mire Quest Guide — Stolen Item Location

TL;DR

  • Man Trapped in a Mire is Main Quest 22 in Crimson Desert — part of Chapter 2, Sub-Chapter “Hernand in Chaos.”
  • It is one of four quests unlocked by “Where Misery Gathers” — you must complete all four to unlock The Dark Veil and continue the story.
  • The rancher is Ibano, found at Capra Pasture, southwest of Hernand City.
  • Defeat the bandits east of Hernand Farmhouse, use your Lantern to find the memory fragment, then play it with the Visione helmet.
  • The Mysterious Elixir (stolen item) is in the pile of crates. A free Palmar Pill is also sitting in the middle of those same crates — don’t miss it.
  • After collecting the elixir, Ibano moves to Muckroot Ranch — not back to the farm where you met him.
  • Rewards: Silver coins + 1x Standard Inventory Expansion Tool + 5x Cloth Pieces + Hernandian Contribution +1.

The Man Trapped in a Mire is one of the most straightforward quests in Chapter 2 of Crimson Desert. But there are two things that trip people up: finding the stolen item when the boxes are smashed, and not realising Ibano moves to a different location for the handoff. This guide covers every step, every shortcut, and every item you should grab before you leave the bandit camp.

How to Unlock the Man Trapped in a Mire Quest

This quest does not appear on its own. It is one of four quests unlocked simultaneously by the main quest “Where Misery Gathers.”

Where Misery Gathers becomes available after you complete “Shadow Cast Over the River” in Chapter 2. Once that is done, head to the notice board in Hernand City and pick up all the posted notices. One of them — the Horn Thief poster — logs The Man Trapped in a Mire into your Journal.

Important: Grab all the posters at the same time. The four Where Misery Gathers quests can all be completed in parallel, and picking them up together saves you from riding back to the notice board repeatedly. All four must be completed to unlock The Dark Veil, the next main story quest.

If you are tracking your progress through the main story, see our guide on how to complete all main story quests in Crimson Desert.

Step 1 — Find Ibano at Capra Pasture

With the quest active, follow the marker to Capra Pasture, located southwest of Hernand City. This is not a farm building — it is an open grazing area near the river.

When you arrive, you will find Ibano in the middle of an argument. His neighbours are accusing him of cutting off his own goats’ horns — essentially calling him a liar. Ibano is furious. He insists strangers came to his property and took the horns without warning.

Kliff steps in, grabs Ibano by the arm to calm him down, and Ibano — surprised by the grip — explains what he saw. Strange people were lurking around his property, and the horns were taken. Kliff agrees to look into it.

Watch the cutscene through and the quest objective will update with a new marker.

Step 2 — Travel to the Bandit Camp East of Hernand Farmhouse

The new quest marker takes you east of Hernand Farmhouse, toward the river. This is where the bandits made camp with the stolen goods.

There are only a handful of bandits here — two or three fighters at most. They are not difficult even with basic gear. Clear the camp quickly and make sure no enemies are left standing before you use your Lantern. Getting hit mid-investigation breaks the interaction.

Step 3 — Use Your Lantern to Find the Memory Fragment

With the camp clear, you need to locate the memory fragment left behind by the bandits.

Equip your Lantern:

  • PlayStation: Hold L1
  • Xbox: Hold LB
  • PC: Hold CTRL

Scan the area around the pile of stolen loot and crates. The Lantern will react — you will hear a sound cue and see the holographic echo of the bandits appear. Hold the Lantern steady and examine the holograms until Kliff finishes reading the memory fragment. The fragment is labelled “Hornless Goat.”

Step 4 — Play the Memory with the Visione Helmet

Once Kliff reads the memory fragment, you need to play it back using the Visione helmet — the magical headgear Kliff uses to re-experience past events.

Quickest Method — Options / Start Button Shortcut

Hold the Options button (PlayStation) or Start button (Xbox) to instantly open the Visione menu and play the Hornless Goat memory. This is by far the fastest way to trigger it.

Manual Method

Open your inventory, select the Visione helmet, and manually choose the Hornless Goat memory from the list.

What the memory shows: The bandits are arguing among themselves. They grabbed the horns thinking they would be worth a lot of money. The leader complains they grabbed the wrong item entirely — the horns are worthless to them. They end up dumping everything they took into the crate pile. This is key for finding the stolen item.

Step 5 — Find the Mysterious Elixir (Stolen Item Location)

After watching the memory, the quest objective updates to find the stolen item.

Look at the pile of crates and boxes near where you found the memory fragment. The Mysterious Elixir is sitting in or among the crates next to the white stone at the edge of the camp.

If the Crates Are Destroyed

If your fight with the bandits was messy — if you used heavy AoE attacks or knocked enemies into the crate pile — the boxes may be smashed. In that case:

  • Walk slowly through the rubble.
  • Examine individual items on the ground using the interaction prompt.
  • The Mysterious Elixir will still be there — it just will not be in a clearly marked crate.

The item does not disappear. It just requires a bit more searching among the scattered debris.

Grab the Free Palmar Pill — Do Not Leave Without It

Before you pick up the Mysterious Elixir and leave, check the middle of the crate pile. There is a Palmar Pill sitting right there for the taking. It does not count as theft — the loot pile belongs to the bandits, who are now dead. Just pick it up.

Palmar Pills are useful healing items and worth having in your inventory. For more on how to use them, see our guide on how to get and use Palmar Pills in Crimson Desert.

Step 6 — Return to Ibano at Muckroot Ranch

This is where many players get confused. After collecting the Mysterious Elixir, the quest marker updates — and Ibano is no longer at Capra Pasture. He has moved to Muckroot Ranch.

Follow the new marker to Muckroot Ranch and approach Ibano. A short cutscene plays. Kliff hands over the Mysterious Elixir. Ibano examines it, realises the bandits were after the elixir — not his goat horns specifically — and the situation calms down. He accepts the resolution and thanks Kliff.

The quest ends and your rewards are deposited into your inventory.

The Standard Inventory Expansion Tool is worth noting. It adds a slot to your carry capacity — a meaningful reward early in the game. For more ways to increase how much you can carry, see our guide on how to increase inventory space in Crimson Desert.

Quick Tips for This Quest

Clear the camp before using the Lantern. If even one bandit is still alive, any attack they land on Kliff will interrupt the Lantern investigation. Kill all three bandits first, then pull out the Lantern.

Use the Options/Start shortcut for the Visione. Holding Options (PS) or Start (Xbox) plays the memory immediately without going into your inventory. It saves time, especially if you are doing all four Where Misery Gathers quests back to back.

Do not leave the bandit camp without the Palmar Pill. It is free, sitting right in the crate pile, and easy to walk past. Grab it before you head to Muckroot Ranch.

Remember Ibano moves to Muckroot Ranch. After collecting the Mysterious Elixir, the quest marker changes. Do not ride back to Capra Pasture — that is the wrong location for the handoff.

Context — Why Is This One of Four Quests?

The Man Trapped in a Mire is part of the “Hernand in Chaos” sub-chapter of Chapter 2. The game wants you to understand the chaos unfolding in the Hernand region through four parallel stories — each showing a different facet of how the local population is suffering from bandit activity and instability.

The four quests unlocked by Where Misery Gathers are:

  1. The Man Trapped in a Mire — Ibano and his stolen goat horns
  2. Three other parallel quests covering different Hernand citizens

All four must be completed before The Dark Veil unlocks and the main story continues. If you are stuck on any of the other three, our guide on all main story quests and chapters has walkthroughs for every quest in the chapter.
