TL;DR
- Arm wrestling is the 5th main quest objective in Chapter 1 — you can’t skip it.
- Fill the meter red by mashing — if it turns completely white, you lose.
- It’s a single 4-round session — lose any round and you restart from Round 1.
- The white wedge in the QTE circle always appears on the left side — press the button just before the spinner reaches it, not when it arrives.
- Tilt your controller 90 degrees for a more comfortable mashing grip — helps a lot on the QTE button too.
- [Patch 1.00.03] QTE difficulty has been reduced — timing windows are now more forgiving across all rounds, including the Champion.
- QTE spinner still too fast? Go to Settings → change Preset from Quality to Performance — it slows the spinner down further.
- First match is free (story quest). Replays cost 20 alms each — paid to the Host NPC near the tables.
- Hero’s Handshake I: Win all 4 rounds in one session to earn an Abyss Artifact.
- You can also use AutoHotKey (PC) to set a macro — it’s single-player, no rules against it.
Arm wrestling in Crimson Desert is one of the first things you do after arriving in Hernand City. It sits inside the main quest chain — so it’s not optional. You can’t progress the story without winning this match. It’s also the earliest look at how Crimson Desert handles its mini-games: a mix of fast button inputs and timed QTE prompts that reward a bit of coordination over pure button-mashing speed.
Once you understand how the two phases work — and a few tricks most guides skip over — every arm wrestling match becomes very manageable, even the champion fight.
Where to Find Arm Wrestling in Crimson Desert
The arm wrestling match happens inside Hernand Inn, during the “Where Rumors Gather“ quest — the 5th main mission of Chapter 1, part of the Trials of Kindness arc.
After Kliff parts ways with the friendly merchant who pulled him from the river, the quest will point you to Hernand Inn for information. Once inside, you’ll find a guard in a metal helmet sitting at a table near the entrance. Here’s how to start your first match:
- Walk up to the guard and aim at him using your targeting button.
- Press the Challenge button — on keyboard this defaults to R, on controllers press the interact button when prompted.
- The arm wrestling match begins.
The first match is completely free — it’s part of the main quest. For all subsequent sessions, speak to the Host NPC standing near the arm wrestling tables. The Host handles match entry, collects the 20 alms fee, and pairs you against your next opponent.
How the Arm Wrestling Mini-Game Works
A full arm wrestling session consists of four consecutive rounds with progressively harder opponents. Lose any round and the session ends — you’ll need to pay 20 alms and start over from Round 1. There are two things happening simultaneously during each round. Understand both and you won’t lose.

The Session Structure
Each session runs through four rounds in sequence:
- Round 1 — The opening guard. Slowest mashing resistance and QTE speed.
- Round 2 — A harder opponent. Faster mashing resistance and narrower QTE window.
- Round 3 — Harder again. Keep focus on QTE timing.
- Round 4 — The Champion. Fastest reaction window. Beat them to complete Hero’s Handshake I.
The Meter
A gauge runs across the screen. Your side is red. Your opponent’s side is white.
- Mash to push the meter toward red.
- If the meter goes completely red, you win the round.
- If the meter goes completely white, you lose the round and the entire session.
- The meter moves in both directions depending on who’s mashing faster and hitting timing prompts correctly.
The QTE Timing Prompt
Every few seconds, a circular dial appears at the center of the screen. A spinner rotates clockwise. There’s a highlighted wedge on the dial — that’s your target zone.
Key tip: The white wedge always appears on the left side of the circle. It doesn’t move randomly. Once you know this, you can anticipate exactly where to look. Press the timing button just before the spinner enters the white wedge zone — anticipation is more reliable than reacting to it visually.
When the spinner enters the white wedge zone, press the timing button. A successful hit surges the meter in your favor significantly — much more than mashing alone.

Tips to Win Every Arm Wrestling Match
1. Anticipate the QTE White Zone — Don’t Just React
This is the single most important skill in arm wrestling. A clean QTE hit pushes the meter far more than any amount of mashing. Missing it hands the momentum back to your opponent.
The white wedge always appears on the left side of the dial. Stop mashing for half a second when the QTE appears, watch the spinner, and press just before it enters the left wedge zone — anticipation beats pure reaction time every time.
2. Tilt Your Controller 90 Degrees
This is a tip that Game8 picked up from community testing and it genuinely helps. Rotating your controller 90 degrees makes it physically much easier to rapid-fire press the mash button. It also repositions your thumb to be closer to the QTE button for when the timing prompt appears.
If you’re playing on a DualSense or Xbox controller, try it in your first practice match. Many players find it noticeably more comfortable.
3. Fix a Too-Fast QTE Spinner with a Settings Change
If the timing spinner still feels too quick to react to, there’s a fix built into the game itself. Go to:
Settings → Others → Options tab → Change Preset from Quality to Performance
This adjusts the game’s rendering performance mode and, as a side effect, slows down the QTE spinner during arm wrestling. You can switch back to Quality after you’re done if you prefer the visual settings.
Note (Patch 1.00.03): The QTE difficulty has already been reduced globally by this patch, so this settings trick is now less essential than it was at launch. It still works and is useful extra margin for the Champion round if you need it.
4. Use AutoHotKey on PC (Optional)
Since Crimson Desert is a single-player game with no competitive multiplayer, there’s nothing stopping PC players from using a macro to handle the mashing phase. AutoHotKey can be configured to rapid-fire the E key faster and more consistently than manual mashing. This doesn’t help with the QTE timing prompt — that still needs manual input — but it removes the physical strain of the mashing phase entirely.
5. Keep a Rhythm During the Mash Phase — Don’t Panic Mash
If you lose the lead, resist the urge to panic and mash even harder. Focus on landing the next QTE cleanly — one good timing hit recovers more ground than several seconds of mashing. Slow down mentally, hit the white wedge, then resume mashing with focus.

Hero’s Handshake I — The Arm Wrestling Challenge
After completing the main quest, you can come back to Hernand Inn and start a full session for 20 alms by speaking to the Host NPC. This unlocks a challenge called Hero’s Handshake I, which is part of the Test of Strength mini-game challenge category.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Win Rounds 1, 2, and 3 against progressively harder opponents without losing.
- In Round 4, the Champion appears as your final opponent.
- Beat the Champion to complete Hero’s Handshake I.
Reward: An Abyss Artifact — one of the collectibles used to unlock new skills and upgrade existing ones in Crimson Desert.
Each successive round gets harder. The regular opponents in rounds 2 and 3 mash faster and hit more QTE prompts than the opening guard. The Champion has the fastest reaction window of all. However, Patch 1.00.03 reduced the overall QTE difficulty across all rounds, so timing windows are now more generous than they were at launch — players who struggled with the Champion before the patch should find it more manageable now.
Note: Hero’s Handshake I is part of the Minigame sub-category in the Challenges menu. Completing all Test of Strength challenges (including Hero’s Handshake and other physical mini-games) contributes toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
Abyss Artifacts are also earned from other side activities and main story bosses. See our guide on how to ascend Lioncrest Watchtower in Crimson Desert for another early Artifact opportunity nearby.
Arm Wrestling Locations Beyond Hernand
Hernand Inn is not the only place to arm wrestle in Crimson Desert. Once you’ve unlocked the mini-game, arm wrestling tables can be found in taverns and social gathering spots across Pywel. Opponents in farther regions tend to be harder but pay out more alms for a win. It’s a reliable way to top up your coin supply without fighting, which is especially handy when your consumables are running low.
As a general rule: if you’re visiting a new town with a tavern, check for an arm wrestling table. It’s worth a quick match.

Where to Get Crimson Desert
FAQs
Q: How do I win arm wrestling in Crimson Desert?
A: Mash the action button (Square on PS5, X on Xbox, E on PC) to push the red meter in your favor. When the circular QTE dial appears, wait for the spinner to approach the white wedge on the left side of the circle, then press the timing button (X on PS5, A on Xbox, R on PC) just before the spinner enters the zone — anticipation is more reliable than reacting to it visually. Alternate between mashing and landing clean QTE hits — the QTE hits move the meter far more than mashing alone. Fill the meter completely red to win.
Q: Where is the white zone in the Crimson Desert arm wrestling QTE?
A: The white wedge always appears on the left side of the circular dial. It doesn’t appear randomly — it’s always in the same position. Press the timing button just before the spinner enters the zone rather than waiting for it to arrive — anticipation is more reliable than pure reaction time.
Q: The arm wrestling spinner is too fast — how do I slow it down?
A: Go to Settings → Others → Options tab, and change the Preset from Quality to Performance. This slows the QTE spinner down during arm wrestling. Note that Patch 1.00.03 already reduced QTE difficulty globally, so this setting is now supplementary rather than essential. You can switch back to Quality afterward if you prefer your usual graphics settings.
Q: Is arm wrestling easier after Patch 1.00.03?
A: Yes. Patch 1.00.03 (released March 22–25, 2026) decreased the QTE difficulty in the Arm Wrestling mini-game, making timing windows more forgiving across all rounds including the Champion. Players who struggled before the patch should find all rounds more manageable after updating.
Q: What is the Hero’s Handshake challenge in Crimson Desert?
A: Hero’s Handshake I is a Test of Strength challenge unlocked after winning your first arm wrestling match at Hernand Inn. It is a single 4-round session — win rounds 1, 2, and 3 against regular opponents, then defeat the Champion in round 4 without losing any round. The reward is an Abyss Artifact used to unlock or upgrade skills.
Q: Can I arm wrestle outside of Hernand Inn in Crimson Desert?
A: Yes. After unlocking the mini-game during Where Rumors Gather, arm wrestling tables appear in taverns and gathering spots across Pywel. Later opponents are harder but pay out more alms. It’s a good source of gold between combat encounters, especially when your healing consumables are running low.
