Crimson Desert: How to Assassinate 3 Enemies Within 1 Minute

Struggling with the Touch of Darkness challenge in Crimson Desert? Here's how to assassinate 3 enemies within 1 minute, best locations, and tips to make it easy.

TL;DR

  • This is the Touch of Darkness challenge, part of the Operation challenge category
  • The Sealed Abyss Artifact is in Hernand, on the north side of the road northeast of Vilkom Outpost in Hills of No Return
  • You must assassinate 3 enemies within 60 seconds of the first kill
  • Assassination only works when enemies are isolated — alerts cancel your ability to chain kills
  • Best locations: farms west of Flame Knight Castle in Demeniss, or St. Halssius’s House of Healing in Hernand
  • Turn off your lantern and work at night — darkness reduces enemy detection range significantly
  • The Storm Veil wind ability is a powerful shortcut if you have it unlocked from Chapter 9

The Touch of Darkness challenge is one of the more frustrating Sealed Abyss Artifacts in Crimson Desert. The problem isn’t performing an assassination — it’s chaining three of them inside 60 seconds without the whole area going on high alert after the first one. One kill and every nearby enemy starts looking for you, which kills the opportunity for quick follow-ups.

This guide covers how assassination actually works, the best locations to attempt the challenge, and the fastest method to get it done.

Where to Find the Sealed Abyss Artifact

Before the challenge can track your progress, you need to pick up the Sealed Abyss Artifact that activates it. Progress made before picking up the artifact does not count retroactively, so grab it first.

Location: The Touch of Darkness Sealed Abyss Artifact is in Hernand, on the north side of the road directly northeast of Vilkom Outpost, in the Hills of No Return area. The artifact sits on a small roadside shrine. Like all Sealed Abyss Artifacts, it glows white when you hold up your lantern nearby, which makes it easier to spot while riding past.

Once you pick it up, the challenge registers in your Journal under Combat — Operation Challenges.

How Assassination Works in Crimson Desert

Assassination is a stealth takedown that instantly kills an enemy. To trigger the assassination prompt, you need to sneak up behind a target without being detected. Crouch to enter stealth mode, approach from behind, and hold the interact button when the assassination prompt appears over the enemy.

A few things that block the assassination prompt from appearing: the enemy is already alerted to your presence, the enemy can see you, or another nearby enemy has spotted you and is in combat mode. Essentially, if anyone in the area knows you’re there, assassinations won’t work on enemies in that area.

This is what makes the 3-in-1-minute challenge tricky. The first assassination is easy. But that kill will alert nearby enemies, which shuts down your window to chain into the next one unless your targets are spread far enough apart.

The key principle: only assassinate enemies who are fully isolated from each other. If killing one enemy doesn’t alert the others, you can immediately move to the next target and stay under the timer.

Best Locations to Complete the Challenge

Farms West of Flame Knight Castle — Demeniss (Recommended)

The best location in the game for this challenge is the farming area west of Flame Knight Castle on the outskirts of Demeniss. The enemy guards here are spread out across individual fields, with many standing completely alone with no other guards in direct line of sight.

The terrain has plenty of natural cover — tall crops, fences, and dark corners between buildings. Approach each guard at night, assassinate them, then immediately move to the next isolated guard before the timer runs out. Because the guards are so spread out, killing one won’t alert the others, giving you clean follow-up opportunities.

At night, detection range drops significantly, so guards need to be much closer to spot you. This alone makes nighttime the right window to attempt any assassination chain.

St. Halssius’s House of Healing — East of Hernand

St. Halssius’s House of Healing is a large location east of Hernand with plenty of enemies who spread across choke points, patrol the outskirts, and guard entry points individually. Use your lantern to distinguish guards from the civilian patients in the area — only guards can be assassinated. Take out isolated guards one by one, moving quickly between targets while staying out of sight.

Dracomort Castle — Northeast Hernand

Some players have had success using Dracomort Castle, located northeast of Hernand. The trick here is to save your game manually near the fast travel point, then reload. After reloading, three enemies will be standing in predictable positions. This lets you plan your route before engaging, assassinate all three quickly, and reload if anything goes wrong.

Occupied Territories During Liberation

Any time you’re liberating a bandit camp or occupied territory, the remaining enemies who start fleeing can be assassinated. Running enemies have the assassination prompt available as you chase them down, and they’re moving away from other enemies rather than alerting them. This is a situational opportunity but a clean one — you often get 2 to 3 fleeing enemies in quick succession during a liberation.

The Chapter 7 Pailune town mission, where you set gunpowder at the docks, is especially good. Enemies are mostly spread out with clear sightlines between them, making it easy to pre-plan which targets to isolate.

The Storm Veil Method (Chapter 9+)

If you can wait until Chapter 9, there’s a far easier method. After unlocking the Wind element from the Abyss Riddle Square, you gain access to the Storm Veil ability. Storm Veil is effectively a smoke bomb — you deploy it around a group of enemies, they start coughing and losing visibility, and you can immediately assassinate anyone inside it regardless of whether they’re alerted.

The steps are simple: walk into the middle of a group of enemies, use Storm Veil, then chain assassinations on the coughing enemies before the effect clears. If you don’t get three in one use, deploy Storm Veil again and repeat. This method completely removes the isolation requirement and makes the challenge trivial.

If you’re already past Chapter 9 and haven’t completed this challenge yet, unlock Storm Veil and use this approach. It’s the cleanest solution in the game.

General Assassination Tips

Turn your lantern off. Keeping the lantern active while sneaking makes you much more visible to enemies. Switch it off before approaching a target.

Work at night only. Enemy detection range drops sharply after dark. Guards who would spot you from 15 meters away in daylight may not see you from 8 meters at night. The darkness gives you much more time to get into position before triggering detection.

Don’t loot between kills. Stopping to loot a body wastes seconds. Skip it entirely and go straight to the next target. You can come back after all three are down.

Scout first, then save. Walk through your chosen area before attempting the challenge. Identify three isolated guards, figure out the fastest path between them, then manual save. If it goes wrong, reload and try again with the same guard positions.

Use grass and cover. Tall grass, fences, walls, and darkness all reduce your visibility to guards nearby. Crouching inside grass makes you nearly invisible at night.

If you alert someone, break line of sight and wait. Enemies cycle out of alert mode after a short time if they lose sight of you. Run around a corner or behind cover, crouch, and wait for their alert indicator to drop before attempting the next assassination. This takes time but keeps your run alive.

Soft targets are fine. You don’t need to assassinate tough enemies or elites. Any enemy that can be assassinated counts. Stick to weaker guards who die instantly from the takedown so there’s no chance of a failed attempt.

Other Operation Challenges Worth Knowing

Touch of Darkness is one of 10 Operation Challenges in Crimson Desert. Completing all ten unlocks the Brilliant Tactician trophy and achievement. The related assassination challenge nearby is the End of the Shadow artifact, which requires assassinating 5 enemies at night — a cumulative total across multiple sessions, not all in one go. That one’s much more forgiving since there’s no time limit and progress carries over between nights.
