TL;DR
- Robbing the Hernand Bank earns you 75+ Silver in about two minutes — it’s the best early-game money method in the entire game
- You need two things: a Mask (10 Copper) and a Key (30 Copper) — buy both from a Back Alley Merchant
- Equip your Mask before entering the bank, but face away from NPCs while putting it on
- The vault door opens automatically when you walk into it with a key — no button press needed
- The red crime circle triggers, but guards cannot enter the locked vault — you are completely safe inside. Just wait for the timer to expire before leaving
- Stolen goods cannot be sold to normal merchants — find a Black Market or Fence vendor to offload them
- Open all looted Strongboxes in your inventory using “Use All” — they don’t open automatically
- Banks exist in every major settlement across Pywel — not just Hernand
Why Rob Banks?
Robbing the Hernand Bank is arguably the fastest Silver you can earn at any point in the early game. The full heist — from entering the building to walking out — takes about two minutes. The vault contains multiple Strongboxes and Chests. Open them all and you’re looking at 75+ Silver per run, depending on what spawns.
For context, completing all nine Hernand bounties from Jeffrey to Warren earns you 94 Silver total — and those take much longer. The bank pays nearly the same in a fraction of the time.
The only requirement is a Mask and a Key. Both cost a combined 40 Copper — a trivially small amount even at the very start of the game.

What You Need Before You Start
A Mask
The Mask hides your identity while committing crimes. Without one, NPCs will report you immediately and guards will swarm.
Three ways to get a Mask:
- Buy from Grisle — the Back Alley Merchant located south of St. Halssius’ House of Healing in Hernand. Cost: 10 Copper
- Buy from Grimrak — the Back Alley Merchant behind the farmhouse east of Muckroot Ranch, southwest of Hernand. Cost: 10 Copper
- Free from the Jeffrey bounty — capture the outlaw Jeffrey (your first bounty target from Pedro at the Guard Station) and you receive a Mask as a quest reward. No Copper required
The easiest option if you’ve already started the bounty chain is the Jeffrey reward. If not, Grisle or Grimrak are quick detours.
One important thing: Wearing the Mask in public draws suspicion from bystanders. Don’t put it on while NPCs are watching you directly. Face away from any nearby pedestrians or guards before equipping it, then walk straight to your destination. The mask is not a perfect cloak — it just prevents your identity from being reported.
A Key
The Key unlocks the vault door inside the bank. You only need one per visit.
Where to buy:
- Grimrak (east of Muckroot Ranch) — 30 Copper
- Any other Back Alley Merchant across Pywel
Keys can also drop from bandit corpses during normal combat, so check your inventory — you may already have one.

How to Rob the Hernand Bank — Step by Step
Step 1 — Equip the Mask Before Entering
Before you even approach the bank building, put the Mask on. Open your inventory, find the Mask, and equip it. Face away from any nearby NPCs while doing this — equipped masks cause passive suspicion if citizens see you putting one on.
Once the Mask is equipped, walk to the bank. Do not run — running past guards draws more attention.
Step 2 — Find the Bank
The Hernand Bank is in the northwest district of Hernand. It’s a large, well-built stone building with guards posted outside — hard to miss. It’s marked with a “?” icon on the Environment tab of your map.
Walk in through the main front door. The bank teller, Grover, will be visible to your right behind the counter.
Step 3 — Enter the Vault
As soon as you walk in, look for the locked door directly opposite Grover. Do not speak to Grover. Do not interact with anyone.
Walk directly into the locked door. As long as you have a Key in your inventory, the door opens automatically — no button prompt required. The game consumes the Key and lets you through.
The door will close behind you once you step inside.
Step 4 — Wait, Then Loot Everything
This is the most important part — and the step most guides get wrong.
The moment you start stealing, a red crime circle appears on your minimap. This represents the active investigation zone. Guards will look for a suspect inside that radius.
Here’s the thing: the guards cannot enter the locked vault. The door you came through is locked from the inside. You are completely safe as long as you stay in the room. Do not panic. Do not try to leave.
What to do:
- Crouch with L3 (PS5/Xbox) / Left Stick Click (PC) to stay low
- Use L1 (PS5) / LB (Xbox) / Q (PC) to examine the Strongboxes and Chests around the room
- Press X (PS5) / A (Xbox) / E (PC) to steal each item
- Watch the Crime Theft meter in the top-right corner of the screen
- When the meter expires and the red circle disappears from the minimap, stop and wait a moment to confirm the heat is gone
- Unequip the Mask from your inventory
Steal everything in the room — every Strongbox on the shelves, every Chest on the floor. Each theft drops your Hernandian Contribution EXP by 5 points, but not your actual Contribution Points (the currency you spend). Contribution EXP recovers quickly by liberating camps, helping with requests, and defeating enemies.

Step 5 — Walk Out Calmly
After unequipping the Mask and waiting for the crime timer to clear:
- Walk to the door
- Press the interact button to open it and exit
- Walk out of the bank normally
- Do not run
Grover and the other bank staff will not react to you at all — the locked room completely isolated the crime scene. As far as the bank is concerned, nothing happened.
Step 6 — Open the Strongboxes in Your Inventory
This is where many players get confused. Strongboxes are not currency — they’re containers. They do not open automatically when looted.
Open your inventory. Find all the Strongboxes you collected. Press:
- PS5: Square → Use (or “Use All” to open every one at once)
- Xbox: X → Use (or “Use All”)
- PC: Right-click → Use (or “Use All”)
Inside each Strongbox you’ll find Silver Coins and occasionally other valuables. “Use All” is the fastest method — select it once and every closed container opens simultaneously.
Step 7 — Sell the Other Stolen Goods
The non-Silver items you stole — other loot and valuables from the chests — are marked as stolen goods. Normal merchants will not buy stolen items.
You need to find a Black Market, Street Shop, Fence, or Secret Shop to offload stolen goods. These vendors buy anything, no questions asked. They’re scattered across Pywel and marked on the map when you’re nearby.
For full details on the theft and crime system, see our complete stealing guide.
Should You Loot the Upstairs Storage Room?
The Hernand Bank has a second area — an upstairs storage room with an additional shelf of Strongboxes. It contains more loot, but it comes with a serious catch.
The upstairs area is watched by guards and citizens. Unlike the downstairs vault, which is isolated once the door closes, the upstairs is an open area where NPCs can see you at any moment. Getting caught upstairs means a Wanted status and a fine — usually equal to or more than whatever you stole.
Our recommendation: Skip the upstairs on your first few visits. The downstairs vault alone provides 75+ Silver per run. Once you’re comfortable with the crime system, learn guard patrol routes and timing. If you can steal upstairs while the guard is turned away and the crime timer clears before anyone spots you, it’s extra Silver. But it requires patience and the timing to be right.
All Bank Locations in Crimson Desert
The Hernand Bank is just your introduction. Banks exist in every major settlement across Pywel and each one follows the same layout — a vault room behind a locked door, accessible with a standard Key.
Known bank locations:
| Location | Region | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hernand | Hernand region | First bank, northwest district. Best for early-game runs |
| Varnia | Northern Pywel | Available once you’ve unlocked northern regions (Chapters 8–9) |
| Other major settlements | Various | Marked as “?” on the Environment map tab in each town |
Look for the “?” icon on the Environment tab of your map in any major town — that’s where the bank is. The vault robbery method is identical in every location.
Robbery Limitations and Cooldowns
Does the bank restock? Yes. The Strongboxes and Chests inside the vault respawn after several in-game days. The exact number varies, but returning after a full real-time day is usually enough.
Can I rob the same bank repeatedly? Yes. There is no permanent limit. You can return as many times as you like once the loot restocks.
Is there a faster way to pass time between robberies? Rest at the bed in the main tent at your Greymane Camp — each rest skips 12 in-game hours. Rest twice and the bank should be restocked. See our Howling Hill camp guide for more on setting up and using your camp.
Crime System: What You Need to Know
Robbing banks sits inside the broader crime system in Crimson Desert. A few things worth understanding:
Contribution EXP vs. Contribution Points: Every stolen item costs you 5 Contribution EXP from your faction rank with Hernand (or whichever settlement you’re stealing from). This is the experience toward your next Contribution Level — not the Contribution Points you spend. Your spendable Contribution Points are completely unaffected. EXP recovers fast by liberating nearby camps and completing requests. See our contribution points guide for the full breakdown.
The red crime circle: When a crime triggers, a red circle appears on your minimap. Guards inside that circle are searching for the culprit. If a guard or witness sees you inside the circle while it’s active, you’re caught. Staying inside the locked vault keeps you completely outside their sight lines.
Wanted status: If you are caught, you receive a Wanted level and a fine. See our bounty removal guide for how to clear it quickly.
Keys for houses: The same key mechanic works for locked houses throughout Pywel. Keys can be purchased from Back Alley Merchants or looted from bandits. See our keys guide for all details.
Quick Tips Summary
- Equip the mask before you enter — face away from NPCs while doing it
- The vault is safe once the door closes — guards cannot enter, so wait the crime timer out inside
- Don’t run — walking past guards is far less suspicious than sprinting
- “Use All” in your inventory to open every Strongbox at once
- Stolen goods need a Fence — normal merchants won’t buy them
- Skip the upstairs until you’re confident with guard timing
- Come back every few in-game days — loot respawns, so it’s a repeatable income source
