TL;DR
- Gate to the Otherworld is Mission 56 in Crimson Desert — Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge, Sub-Chapter: Forbidden Knowledge
- Prerequisite: Complete “On the Right Path” (Mission 55)
- Reward: 1x Abyss Artifact
- The lock device has 9 switches in a 3×3 grid — use D-Pad Left/Right (or mouse) to cycle between them; you don’t need to physically walk to each one
- Fastest solution: press the 4 corner buttons, then press the center button (Switch 5) — done in 5 presses
- For the batteries: hold L3 (PS5/Xbox) or E (PC) to lift the cube, face the 4 orange lights toward the pillar, release, then Force Palm (R3 / F) to slot it in
- After the cutscene: hold L2 (PS5/Xbox) / Right Mouse Button (PC) to activate Axiom Force on the orb, then pull with the right stick / mouse to extract it — this triggers the Tenebrum boss fight
- You cannot save between the orb extraction and the Tenebrum fight — prepare before you pull
- Use the Sealed Abyss Artifact you earn here to unlock a Challenge
Overview
Gate to the Otherworld is the 56th main mission in Crimson Desert. It sits inside Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge, Sub-Chapter: Forbidden Knowledge — right after “On the Right Path.”
You’re helping Octavius, an orc scholar at the Scholastone Institute, run an experiment involving an ancient device inside the Hernand region. The quest has two parts:
- Solve the lock device puzzle underground to activate power
- Insert four cube-shaped batteries into the surrounding pillars to charge the device
After both steps, a cutscene plays, you extract an unstable energy orb, and a boss fight begins immediately.
The puzzle tripped up a lot of players at launch — not because it’s complicated, but because the controls for cycling through the switches aren’t explained at all. Once you know how they work, it takes under a minute.
Prerequisites and Location
Required: Complete Mission 55 — “On the Right Path”
Gate to the Otherworld starts exactly where the previous quest ended, so there’s no travel required. You’ll already be standing in the round plaza at the Scholastone Institute in the Hernand region when the quest activates.
If you need a refresher on story context, our guide to all main story quests and chapters has the full mission order.
Part 1: Activate the Lock Device Underground
Step 1 — Find the Underground Entrance
After Octavius finishes speaking (it takes about 30 seconds), head to the northeast corner of the round plaza. You’ll see a path lined with hanging lanterns leading into the rock face. Follow it down — it leads to a staircase and then to the lower chamber.
Most guides say to “loop around the dome.” The lantern path is faster and easier to spot. Follow the lights.
At the bottom, turn toward the back wall. You’ll find a large wall panel covered in symbols — this is the lock device. Interact with it to begin the puzzle.
Step 2 — Solve the Lock Puzzle
The panel has 9 switches arranged in a 3×3 grid. Each switch shows a symbol. When you press a switch, it toggles itself and nearby tiles in an L-shaped pattern — so pressing the wrong one shifts multiple others out of position. Your goal is to get all 9 switches to press in at the same time, meaning all symbols align.
Important control tip: You do not walk to each switch individually. The game uses a cursor system:
- PS5: D-Pad Left/Right to cycle between switches
- Xbox: D-Pad Left/Right
- PC: Mouse click to select individual switches
Many players waste time physically running between buttons. Stay still and use the D-Pad.
Fastest Solution (5 Presses)
Number the switches 1–9 from top-left to bottom-right, reading left to right across each row:
[ 1 ][ 2 ][ 3 ]
[ 4 ][ 5 ][ 6 ]
[ 7 ][ 8 ][ 9 ]
Press in this order:
- Switch 1 (top-left corner)
- Switch 9 (bottom-right corner)
- Switch 7 (bottom-left corner)
- Switch 3 (top-right corner)
- Switch 5 (center)
When all 9 switches are pressed in, the panel glows and a section of the wall lowers to reveal a handle.
Alternative 5-step sequence (if the above doesn’t work for you):
- Top middle (Switch 2)
- Bottom left (Switch 7)
- Top left (Switch 1)
- Bottom right (Switch 9)
- Top right (Switch 3), then operate the handle
Both solutions work — the puzzle has multiple valid sequences. The L-shaped toggle mechanic means there’s more than one path to lighting all 9 tiles simultaneously.
If you mess up: Back out of the panel entirely. The puzzle resets automatically when you exit. You can try again as many times as you need.

Step 3 — Operate the Handle
After the wall section lowers, interact with the handle that’s now exposed behind it:
- PS5/Xbox: Hold X / A
- PC: Hold E
A short cutscene plays showing the machine booting up. That’s Part 1 done. Head back up the stairs to the round plaza where Octavius is.
Part 2: Insert the Batteries to Activate the Device
Back in the plaza, you’ll now see four cube-shaped battery objects sitting on the ground. Each one is in front of a pillar. The four pillars are arranged in a rough circle around a central device. They’re marked with orange objective indicators on your minimap — easy to spot.
How to Insert Each Battery
Do this one cube at a time. Repeat all four steps for all four pillars.
Step 1 — Grab the cube:
- PS5: Hold L3 (press and hold the left stick)
- Xbox: Hold L3
- PC: Hold E
This activates Axiom Force. An energy field will reach out and lift the cube.
Step 2 — Orient the cube correctly: Rotate the cube using the right stick until the four orange lights are facing you — meaning they’ll face the pillar opening when you walk toward it. This is the key step most guides don’t explain clearly enough. The cube needs to enter the pillar with the lit face going in first.
Step 3 — Position the cube at the pillar: Walk toward the pillar entrance while still holding the cube. Get close until you see green leaves appear around the cube. This is the visual indicator that it’s correctly aligned and in the right spot.
Step 4 — Force Palm it in: Let go of Axiom Force, then immediately press:
- PS5: R3 (press the right stick)
- Xbox: R3
- PC: F
This is Force Palm — it punches the battery into the pillar. If the green leaves appeared, it will lock in place with a satisfying click and a light effect.
Repeat this process for all four pillars. The orange minimap markers will help you track which ones are left.
Troubleshooting: Battery Won’t Insert
Green leaves didn’t appear: Your cube isn’t aligned. The orange lights need to be facing the pillar opening directly. Rotate more carefully and get closer before releasing.
I can’t get close enough: Other players may be blocking in co-op, or you may be approaching from the wrong angle. Try approaching the pillar from the front-center rather than from the side.
The cube dropped and I can’t pick it back up: Walk away a few steps and try Axiom Force again from a fresh angle.
After All Four Batteries Are Inserted
Once all four cubes are in place, light beams shoot from each pillar toward the central orb. A cutscene with Octavius begins automatically. Watch it through — it sets up the boss encounter.
Part 3: Extract the Unstable Orb
When the cutscene ends, you’ll be back in the plaza facing the central pillar. The glowing orb in the center needs to be removed.
Important: The game does not let you save between this step and the boss fight that follows. Make sure your health is full and your food inventory is stocked before pulling the orb.
Here’s the exact control sequence:
- Hold L2 (PS5/Xbox) / Right Mouse Button (PC) to activate Axiom Force and grab the orb
- Use the right stick (PS5/Xbox) / move your mouse (PC) to pull the orb out of the pillar
Pull steadily — don’t jerk. The orb will detach with a visual pulse effect.
A second cutscene begins immediately, and the quest completes.
Reward: 1x Abyss Artifact
Make sure to open it. Learn how in our guide on how to open Sealed Abyss Artifacts.
The Boss Fight: Tenebrum
The moment you extract the orb, the experiment goes wrong — Octavius gets pulled into the portal, and Tenebrum appears immediately. There is no gap between the cutscene and the encounter, and you cannot save during this phase.
Tenebrum is an aerial boss — a plume of dark energy that circles the arena at height. It cannot be damaged by conventional weapons or ground attacks. Here’s what you need to know:
How to Damage Tenebrum
- Use Blinding Flash to expose its weak point:
- PS5: Hold L1 + R1, then press R1
- Xbox: Hold LB + RB, then press RB
- PC: Ctrl + Left Click
- Double jump and deploy your wings to get airborne — use the updraft from below to stay in the air
- Use Force Palm (R3 / F) while flying to land hits — three Force Palm hits defeat Tenebrum
The best window to attack is when Tenebrum drifts to the center of the arena to charge its attack — this is its slowest moment and gives you a clean angle for Force Palm. Stand behind the pillars to avoid its projectiles while you wait for this window.
If you fall to the ground: Don’t panic. You respawn back on the upper level of the plaza and Tenebrum keeps whatever damage you’ve already dealt — no progress is lost if you go down.
Make sure you have going into the orb extraction:
- Full health
- Food in your inventory — healing is food-only in Crimson Desert, no potions exist. See our guide on cooking the best healing food
- Upgraded gear if you’ve been neglecting it. Check our weapon and armor upgrade guide
- Strong skills equipped — see best skills to level up first and how to get more skill points
Common Questions
The puzzle solution I found online isn’t working. Why?
There are multiple valid solutions to the lock puzzle. If one sequence doesn’t work, back out to reset it and try the corners + center method listed above. The puzzle state doesn’t carry between attempts.
I can’t find the staircase underground. Where exactly is it?
Go to the northeast corner of the round plaza — not directly behind the dome, but to the side. Look for hanging lanterns. The lantern path leads directly to the staircase entrance. It’s a narrow gap in the rock face.
The battery cube disappeared or fell through the floor.
This is a rare bug. Reload your most recent autosave. The quest autosaves frequently at each objective, so you shouldn’t lose much progress.
The green leaf indicator never appeared on the battery cube.
You need to orient the cube so the side with four orange lights faces the pillar opening. Try rotating the cube 90 degrees and approaching again. If you’re at the wrong angle, the indicator won’t trigger.
The orb won’t come out of the pillar.
Make sure you’re holding L2 (Axiom Force) before pulling with the right stick. L2 is the grab input for the orb — unlike the battery step which uses L3.
I can’t damage Tenebrum at all.
Tenebrum cannot be hurt by regular attacks. You must use Blinding Flash first to expose its weak spot, then get airborne and land Force Palm hits. Ground-based attacks do nothing.
