TL;DR

  • Dyes work on armor, weapons, horse barding, and your War Robot — all customizable per section
  • You must use a dye from your inventory first before it shows up at the Dyehouse — skipping this step is the #1 source of confusion
  • One dye bottle unlocks multiple shades of that color permanently — no repeat crafting needed
  • Get dyes by crafting at a Cauldron (not a cooking pot), buying from Theoric at Hernand Farmhouse, finding them in the world, or stealing them
  • The Dyehouse lets you dye individual armor sections — not just one color across the whole piece
  • You can save color combinations before spending Silver Coins — always preview first
  • Completing Naira’s Gloomy Gray → Vibrant Dye quest chain gives you the in-game tutorial
  • Later, unlock Oliver at your Greymane camp as a permanent dye vendor

Overview: How the Dye System Works

Crimson Desert has one of the most detailed armor dye systems in any recent action RPG. You don’t just pick a color and slap it on. You can dye individual sections of each piece of armor — the chest plate, leather straps, ornamental designs, and frills all separately. You can also change the material finish to make armor look shinier, more metallic, or more worn.

It goes further than just your own gear. The same system applies to your horse’s barding and the paint on your War Robot. One Dyehouse handles all of it.

There is one important thing to understand before you start: dyes are permanent and reusable once learned. Crafting or buying a dye bottle doesn’t apply it directly. You must first “Use” it from your inventory to add it to your collection. After that, you can apply it as many times as you want at any Dyehouse — as long as you have enough Silver Coins. The bottle is consumed once, but the color is yours forever.

Step 1: Get a Dye

You need at least one dye in your inventory before you can do anything at the Dyehouse. Here are all the ways to get one.

Option A: Craft a Dye at a Cauldron

This is the most reliable method and works from very early in the game.

Important: You must use a Cauldron, not a cooking pot. These are two different stations. The Cauldron is used for alchemy and dye crafting. The cooking pot is for food only. Many players mix these up and wonder why the dye option isn’t appearing.

Where to find a Cauldron:

  • Hernand Town Cauldron: Inside a building in central Hernand — it’s in the structure just north of where the rock-paper-scissors minigame is played.
  • Hernand Farmhouse Cauldron: There’s also one close to the Dyehouse at Hernand Farmhouse, southeast of town near the river.
  • First Witch House: If you’ve reached the early story location, there’s a Cauldron there too.

How to craft a dye:

Walk up to the Cauldron and interact with it. You’ll see a recipe list if you have discovered any. If you don’t have recipes yet, select the “Improvise” option. This lets you mix ingredients freely and experiment to discover new colors. Most dye recipes use a combination of flowers and insects, which are easy to find while exploring.

Known dye recipes:

DyeIngredients
Dark Yellow Dye10 Dunbaria, 3 Beetle, 1 Longhorn Beetle, 2 Stag Beetle
Bright Yellow Dye10 Dunbaria, 3 Beetle, 3 Longhorn Beetle
Bright Red DyeFollows the in-game tutorial with Naira (see quest section below)

You can find more recipes scattered around Pywel the same way you find cooking recipes — as loot, quest rewards, and exploration pickups.

Option B: Buy Dyes from Theoric at the Dyehouse

You don’t always have to craft. Theoric, the dyer at Hernand Farmhouse, also sells dyes directly. When you speak to him, select “Buy” instead of “Dye” to browse his stock. This is the fastest way to get your first color without needing any materials.

Option C: Find or Steal Dyes in the World

Dye bottles appear as loot throughout Pywel — in chests, on shelves in homes, and near crafting areas. Most of the time, dye bottles sitting around belong to someone. If you want to take them, you’ll need to equip a mask first so NPCs don’t report you as a criminal.

Option D: Earn Dyes Through Quests

Some quests give dyes as rewards. The in-game tutorial for dyeing — Naira’s quest chain — rewards you with the Bright Red Dye after completion. More on that quest below.

Step 2: Use the Dye from Your Inventory

Once you have a dye bottle, do not go straight to the Dyehouse. This is where most players get confused.

Open your inventory. Find the dye. Press:

  • PS5: Square → Use
  • Xbox: X → Use
  • PC: Right-click → Use

The dye is consumed and added permanently to your collection. When you return to the Dyehouse and enter the customization screen, the color (and all its shades) will now be available to apply.

Skipping this step means the color won’t show up at the Dyehouse no matter how long you look.

Step 3: Visit the Dyehouse and Apply Your Dye

Now you’re ready to actually customize your gear.

Where Is the Dyehouse?

The earliest and most accessible Dyehouse is at Hernand Farmhouse, southeast of Hernand town near the river. Look for the NPC surrounded by colorful cloth and hanging dyed fabrics — that’s Theoric, your dyer.

You can also spot it easily on the map — it’s marked in the south part of Hernand.

How to Use the Dyehouse

  1. Speak to Theoric and select “Dye”
  2. On the left side of the screen, select the armor or weapon piece you want to customize
  3. On the right side, you’ll see the dyeable sections of that piece — these vary per item
  4. Select a section (chest plate, strap, trim, ornament, etc.)
  5. Choose your color from the dyes you’ve learned
  6. Optionally, change the material finish — this affects how the surface looks (matte, metallic, worn, shiny)
  7. Save your combination before confirming — you can preview the full look and adjust before spending anything
  8. Press Triangle (PS5) / Y (Xbox) / Enter (PC) to confirm

The cost in Silver Coins depends on how many changes you make. Simple single-color changes cost very little. Full overhauls across multiple sections cost more.

What Can You Dye?

  • Your armor — per section (not a single color wash)
  • Your weapons
  • Horse barding and caparison — your mount’s armor and cloth
  • War Robot paint — including the metallic body sections

Note: There is no transmog system in Crimson Desert currently. You cannot apply the appearance of one armor piece onto another. You can only change the color and material of what you’re actually wearing.

Naira’s Quest Chain: The In-Game Dye Tutorial

The game introduces the dye system properly through a specific side quest chain from your comrade Naira. Here’s how to trigger it:

  1. Establish your Greymane camp and meet Naira and Andrew (this happens in Act 3)
  2. Continue doing Greymane side quests and upgrading your camp
  3. Naira will offer a quest called The Greymanes’ New Fangs, which introduces animal companions
  4. After that, Naira offers the Brightening the Spirits chain:
    • Gloomy Gray — follow Naira on horseback (quick, easy ride)
    • Vibrant Dye — craft a Bright Red Dye at the Cauldron for Naira
  5. Completing this chain teaches you the system and rewards you with a dye

You don’t have to wait for this quest to start dyeing — you can use Theoric at Hernand Farmhouse the moment you arrive in the area. But the quest gives you a nice walkthrough and a free dye as a reward.

Unlocking Oliver: Your Camp Dye Vendor

Once you’ve progressed further in the main story and recruited more Greymane survivors, you’ll eventually unlock a comrade named Oliver. He sets up shop at your Greymane camp and becomes your permanent dye vendor — no more walking to Hernand every time.

This is part of the broader camp progression system. For more on that, check our guides on how to use contribution points and how to dispatch the Howling Hill expansion mission to grow your camp faster.

Quick Tips for Dyeing in Crimson Desert

Always preview before you confirm. The game lets you save color combinations and view the final look before spending Silver. Use this. It’s easy to misjudge how a color looks on a piece in the menu vs. in the open world.

One dye bottle = multiple shades. When you use a dye, it doesn’t just unlock one exact color. It unlocks a range of related shades. For example, using a Bright Red Dye might unlock several different tones of red — from deep burgundy to vivid crimson. You get more variety than expected from a single bottle.

Use the Improvise option freely. The Cauldron’s Improvise mode lets you try ingredient combinations without needing a recipe. Experiment with different flowers and insects — results are saved and you’ll discover new colors over time.

Not every armor piece can be fully dyed. Some pieces have many dyeable sections. Some have only one or two. A handful can’t be dyed at all. Check the Dyehouse first before deciding how much effort to put into collecting specific dyes.

Dyes found during adventures save you crafting time. Keep an eye on your loot. Dye bottles drop from chests and can be found in homes and workshops across Pywel. If you’re using the how to get lost loot guide, you may already have more dyes than you realize.
