TL;DR
- The mushroom block puzzle is in the flower shop Dark World, early in Chapter 5.
- The Flower NPC hint about bringing it a mushroom is a distraction — ignore it.
- Go south and eat at least two mushrooms to stack them on Kris’s head.
- Walk back into the puzzle room. The mushrooms will fall and reveal hidden foxes.
- One fox is disguised as the block you need to move. Pick it up and carry it to the switch.
- Drop the fox on the switch to clear the spikes and open the path.
The mushroom block puzzle in Deltarune Chapter 5 is one of those Toby Fox puzzles that looks completely impossible the first time you see it. The block is out of reach. The switch is too far. There is an NPC telling you to fetch a mushroom. None of it makes obvious sense. Once you understand the fox mechanic hidden inside the room, though, the solution is fast and simple. This guide walks you through every step.
Where the Mushroom Block Puzzle Is
This puzzle appears early in the flower shop Dark World, which is the main setting for Chapter 5. After you reunite with Ralsei, battle some enemies, and pick up the Red Ribbon armor from the chest on the left path, you take the path to the right. That path is blocked by spikes controlled by a switch — but the block you need to press it is sitting somewhere you cannot push it from. That is where the puzzle starts.
There is actually a second version of this same mechanic later in the chapter, near a Floradinn NPC guarding another block. Both work the same way. This guide covers how the mechanic works so you can handle both encounters.
Why the Flower NPC Hint Is a Red Herring
When you enter the puzzle room, there is a Flower NPC at the top you can talk to. It tells you the path is blocked and asks you to bring it a mushroom from the south side of the room. This sounds like a quest. It is not.
The Flower NPC is a distraction. Fetching a mushroom for it does not solve anything and is not part of the solution. Skip that interaction entirely and focus on what is actually happening in the room.
How to Solve the Mushroom Block Puzzle

Step 1 — Go South and Eat the Mushrooms
Head to the south side of the puzzle room. You will find mushrooms growing there. Walk up to them and interact to bite one. Eating a mushroom places it on Kris’s head and they stack vertically. One of the mushroom spots provides multiple mushrooms at once, letting you carry up to six stacked at a time.
You need to eat at least two mushrooms. Eating more than two does not give you any extra advantage, but two is the minimum you need for the mechanic to trigger properly when you walk back.
Step 2 — Walk Back Into the Puzzle Room
With the mushrooms stacked on Kris’s head, walk back into the puzzle area toward the block and switch. As you move through the room, the mushrooms will fall off Kris’s head and land on the ground around you.
This is the key moment. When the mushrooms hit the ground, hidden foxes will appear throughout the room and rush toward the mushrooms to eat them. One of these foxes is not a normal fox — it is disguised as the block you could not move. The block shapeshifts into a fox and chases the mushroom.

Step 3 — Catch the Fox Before It Eats the Mushroom
As soon as the fox appears and starts moving toward the mushroom, press the interact button to grab it and place it on Kris’s head. Do this quickly. If the fox reaches and eats the mushroom before you can catch it, the puzzle resets and you will need to go south and eat mushrooms again.
If you are playing the second version of this puzzle near the Floradinn NPC, the same rule applies — eat at least two mushrooms to the south, walk back through the area so the tree bark knocks them off your head, and then catch the shapeshifting fox before it eats the mushroom.
Step 4 — Carry the Fox to the Switch and Drop It
With the fox on your head, walk over to the switch on the right side of the room. Once you are positioned on it or next to it, interact again to drop the fox down. When the fox lands on the switch, it transforms back into a block and presses it down. The spikes deactivate and the path opens.
Bonus — How to Get the NetskieHat Armor Chest

There is a chest on the right side of the room that is blocked and out of reach. You can get to it using the exact same fox mechanic. Lure the fox out with your mushrooms, catch it before it eats them, carry it to the required spot near the chest, and drop it down. It transforms back into a block and gives you the platform you need to reach the chest. Inside is the NetskieHat Armor, which is worth grabbing if you want an early equipment upgrade.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Talking to the Flower NPC and trying to bring it a mushroom — this does nothing and wastes your time. The NPC is a misdirect.
- Only eating one mushroom — eat at least two for the fox to appear reliably when the mushrooms fall.
- Being too slow to catch the fox — as soon as the mushrooms fall and foxes appear, move straight to the shapeshifting one and interact immediately. If it reaches the mushroom first, the fox disappears and you have to restart the sequence.
- Dropping the fox in the wrong spot — carry it all the way to the switch before dropping it. Dropping it early just places it back as a block in the wrong location.
