Does Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Have Zombies?

    By Lilly Daniels · October 22, 2026 · 7 min read
does call of duty modern warfare 4 have zombies

    TL;DR

    • No — Modern Warfare 4 does not have a Zombies mode of any kind
    • No round-based Zombies, no open-world mode like MWZ, nothing
    • MW4 is the first COD since 2022 without Zombies
    • Zombies belongs to Treyarch — Infinity Ward skipped it in favor of DMZ
    • DMZ is the third mode in MW4 — a full extraction shooter set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone
    • Zombies is not announced for any MW4 season update either
    • You can still play Zombies in Black Ops 7, which continues to receive content updates

If you searched “does MW4 have Zombies,” you already know the answer feels off. Three COD games in a row had Zombies in some form. MW3 had MWZ. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both had round-based modes with full Easter egg maps. So it is a fair question going into Modern Warfare 4.

The short answer is no. Modern Warfare 4 does not have Zombies. Not at launch, not announced for any season. Infinity Ward put that time into DMZ instead — and this time it is a proper mode, not a beta. Here is everything you need to know.

Is There a Zombies Mode in Modern Warfare 4?

No. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has no Zombies mode — not round-based, not open-world, not a Zombies-lite spin-off. Nothing.

MW4 launches with three modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. That is it. Zombies is not among them. This makes Modern Warfare 4 the first Call of Duty title since Modern Warfare II in 2022 to ship without any form of Zombies content.

This was confirmed officially well before launch. Infinity Ward has not teased Zombies as a future season addition either. As of now, it is simply not happening in MW4.

Why Doesn’t Modern Warfare 4 Have Zombies?

The reason comes down to studio identity. Zombies is Treyarch’s mode. Treyarch built it, refined it over more than a decade, and the fan base that cares most about Zombies associates it with the Black Ops series. When a Treyarch game ships — Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7 — Zombies is a central pillar. When Infinity Ward ships, it historically is not.

Infinity Ward has made Zombies exactly once, in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare back in 2016. It was well-received, but the studio never returned to it. Their Modern Warfare games — 2019, MWII in 2022, MWIII in 2023, and now MW4 — have all gone without it. That pattern is not an accident. It reflects where each studio puts its development resources and what each team is genuinely good at building.

The exception was Modern Warfare III, which shipped MWZ — Modern Warfare Zombies — as a one-off attempt at an open-world Zombies experience built by Sledgehammer Games. MWZ had a mixed reception and the format was not carried forward. MW4 makes no attempt to revive it.

Instead, Infinity Ward spent the time other years went into Zombies on building a complete, fully featured DMZ mode. That is where their energy went.

What Is in MW4 Instead of Zombies — DMZ Explained

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4’s third major mode — a PvPvE extraction shooter set in a large-scale exclusion zone. It first appeared in Modern Warfare II (2022) as a beta that never left that phase. This time it is a finished, full-featured mode that ships as part of the paid game.

    Here is how it works.

    The Setting: Hajin Exclusion Zone

DMZ takes place on a map called Hajin, described by Infinity Ward as the biggest map the studio has ever built for a COD mode — larger than Al Mazrah from the original DMZ. Hajin spans parts of South Korea, North Korea, and Russia, shaped around the aftermath of the MW4 campaign’s story. A reactor meltdown has turned the area into an exclusion zone with no civilians, escalating threat levels across regions, and a living world that changes each time you drop in.

Confirmed points of interest in Hajin include Hajin City, Casino, Hospital, Broadcast, Farmlands, Fallout, MI Base, and Deadtown.

    Three Ways to Play DMZ

DMZ offers three distinct mission formats:

    • Story Missions — Narrative-driven objectives that continue directly from the MW4 campaign. Matchmaking groups players pursuing the same mission together, which means the players hunting your objective may also be your opponents.
    • Dynamic Ops — Randomly assigned objectives that appear after you drop in. Typically built around specific tasks like stealing intel from a location and extracting it before other squads stop you.
    • Free Roam — Pure sandbox. Loot, hunt other Operators, disrupt rival squads’ missions, or just explore the map at your own pace.

    Key Features

    • Forward Operating Base (FOB) — Your staging hub before each deployment. Manage your Operator, set up loadouts, craft items, review missions, and upgrade your base between runs
    • Dynamic Weather — Conditions in Hajin change per deployment, affecting visibility, movement, and enemy behavior
    • Bounty System — A player-driven board that turns other Operators into risk-reward targets. Hunt bounties for rewards, but know that accepting one also marks you
    • Threat Levels — Each region of Hajin has a Threat Level displayed on screen. Higher threat areas carry better loot and tougher AI, including special enemy Lieutenants
    • Dedicated Progression — DMZ has its own separate rank track, Trait Trees, and Operator Prestige, capped at Level 70. Progress here does not bleed into or out of multiplayer
    • Crafting and Looting — Containers across Hajin hold armor plates, bandages, keys, crafting materials, and equipment. Crafting feeds back into your FOB upgrades

Unlike the original DMZ, which was a free Warzone add-on, MW4’s DMZ requires owning the full game. It runs on current-gen hardware only — PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. No PS4 or Xbox One.

Is DMZ the Same as Zombies?

Not really. They fill a similar slot — the co-op PvE “third mode” — but they play completely differently.

Zombies is wave-based survival against undead enemies in a contained arena, with Easter egg quests built around increasingly difficult rounds. The enemies are supernatural. The tone is often over-the-top.

DMZ is a military extraction shooter. You drop into a large open map, complete objectives, loot supplies, fight AI soldiers and rival player squads, and extract before you are eliminated. The enemies are grounded and realistic. You keep what you extract. Death has consequences.

If you enjoy Zombies for the Easter egg hunts, the lore, and the round-based challenge — DMZ is not a substitute. If you enjoy it for the co-op tension, the resource management, and the chaos of other players interfering — DMZ scratches a lot of those same itches in a different way.

Can You Still Play Zombies After MW4 Launches?

Yes. Black Ops 7 Zombies remains fully playable and continues to receive content updates through 2026. Season 06 of Black Ops 7 added the Tenshu Survival map and Directed Mode for Rex Infernus. The maps, Easter eggs, and round-based gameplay are all still there and still being supported.

MW4 launching does not affect Black Ops 7 in any way. Both games exist side by side. If Zombies is what you want, Black Ops 7 is where to go. MW4 is not trying to replace it.

Will Zombies Ever Come to Modern Warfare 4?

Activision has not announced any Zombies content for MW4 — not as a season update, not as a limited event, nothing. In early 2026 a leak went viral claiming Activision was developing a standalone Zombies game to sit alongside the yearly release. Activision did not confirm or deny that specifically, and no official follow-up has surfaced since.

What is confirmed: MW4’s live seasons will add new multiplayer maps and modes, DMZ content updates for Hajin, and Warzone Season 1 integration on November 6. Zombies is not part of any of those announcements. It is not happening unless something changes, and there is no signal that anything will.
