If you’ve been waiting for the next big officially licensed Elden Ring release and thought Nightreign was your last fix for a while, think again. Steamforged Games has wrapped up its crowdfunding campaign for Elden Ring: Rot and Sorcery, a brand-new tabletop expansion taking players into Liurnia of the Lakes and Caelid, and it’s got a confirmed release window of July 2027.
- What it is: An officially licensed expansion for Elden Ring: The Board Game from Steamforged Games
- Release window: July 2027
- Crowdfunding platform: Gamefound (campaign now closed)
- Backers: Over 4,200 backers with approximately $2.5 million USD raised
- New regions: Liurnia of the Lakes and Caelid, each as a standalone core box
- Players: One to four players, compatible with existing Elden Ring: The Board Game content
What Elden Ring: Rot and Sorcery Actually Is
Rot and Sorcery is the second major wave of Steamforged’s officially licensed Elden Ring tabletop adaptation, which originally launched on Kickstarter back in 2022 with three Limgrave-focused core boxes and raised over £3.3 million from more than 13,000 backers. The new campaign follows the same blueprint but pushes the adventure into two entirely new regions of the Lands Between, each as its own standalone experience.
The expansion ships as two separate core boxes. Machinations of the Witch takes players through the misty shores and sorcery-heavy intrigues of Liurnia of the Lakes, while Dominion of Rot drops them into the Scarlet Rot-drenched nightmare of Caelid. Both are fully playable without owning any previous Elden Ring: The Board Game content, but they can also be combined with the original Limgrave campaign for players wanting to build out one massive interconnected journey through the Lands Between from start to finish.
What’s Actually Included
Based on what Steamforged revealed during the campaign, here’s what players can expect across both core boxes:
- New enemies, bosses, NPCs, and quests drawn directly from each region of the video game
- New equipment sets, weapons, and Ashes of War to build out characters
- Full backwards compatibility with the original Elden Ring: The Board Game boxes
- Campaign-exclusive stretch goal rewards unlocked during the Gamefound run
- Limgrave Upgrade Pack included in select pledge tiers for returning backers
Radahn Is Almost Certainly Coming to the Table
Steamforged hasn’t officially confirmed every boss encounter for Dominion of Rot yet, but if you know anything about Caelid in the video game, one name stands out immediately. Starscourge Radahn is the defining encounter of that entire region, and given how central his story is to the base game’s lore plus everything Shadow of the Erdtree adds on top of that, it would be a strange omission to leave him out of a board game set directly in his domain. Expect campaign announcements to flesh that out as the July 2027 window gets closer.
You Don’t Need the Original Game to Jump In
One of the bigger selling points Steamforged kept emphasizing throughout the campaign is that Rot and Sorcery is completely standalone. Both Machinations of the Witch and Dominion of Rot can be played start to finish without touching the original Limgrave content, which removes the barrier of entry that might have put new players off otherwise. The full campaign experience spanning all five core boxes across three regions is there for anyone who wants it, but it’s not a requirement to have a good time.
What Else Is Coming to Elden Ring Before July 2027
The wait for Rot and Sorcery is roughly a year out, but FromSoftware and the broader Elden Ring ecosystem aren’t exactly going quiet in the meantime. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is heading to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, bringing new starting classes, weapons, armor sets, and Ashes of War to the base game. Beyond that, FromSoftware has confirmed it’s working on multiple new projects, including The Duskbloods as a Switch 2 exclusive and a rumored new soulslike set in a pirate world that’s been floating around for a while.
Missed the Campaign? Retail Is Likely Coming
If you didn’t back Rot and Sorcery during the Gamefound campaign, don’t panic. Based on Steamforged’s pattern with the original Elden Ring: The Board Game, a retail launch of both core boxes is likely to follow fulfillment in July 2027. The original campaign boxes eventually hit retail shelves, and there’s no reason to expect Rot and Sorcery to be any different, though campaign backers will almost certainly get access to exclusive stretch goal content that won’t be available at retail later on.
