What Is the Pioneers Quest in Genshin Impact

Pioneers is the first subquest of the Moon Gazing world quest chain, which launched with Genshin Impact version 6.7. It kicks off the entire Frost Moon storyline, sending the Traveler and Paimon to the moon alongside a mysterious black Kuuhenki named Eggie. This quest introduces the Archaeolune Energy mechanic that underpins almost everything you’ll do on the Frost Moon, so understanding it here saves a lot of time later.

The only prerequisite is completing Prologue Act 3: The Song of the Dragon and Freedom. Once that’s done, the quest unlocks automatically when you approach the Statue of the Seven at Dunanna Pit in the northeast part of Nod-Krai.

How to Start the Pioneers Quest

Open the Events menu and select the When We Look Up at the Moon tab. Press Go to be teleported to the Misty Shoal waypoint. Walk forward along the Moonlanes until you spot Columbina in the distance on the island east of Piramida. Follow her, watch the cutscene, and the Pioneers quest begins automatically from there.

How to Activate the Energy Mechanisms

Once inside the ancient underground base, you need to restore power using a new mechanic called Archaeolune Energy. Here’s how it works: look for the glowing blue and yellow energy spheres scattered around each room. Press the button that appears next to your Elemental Skill button to absorb the energy. Then hold the aim button and press again to fire an Archaeolune Ripple that explodes on impact, applying zero gravity to the surrounding area.

When you reach the generator room, absorb the energy from a nearby source and fire it at the generator. The energy path will be blocked by a cube. Absorb energy again, aim at the cube, and activate it to blast it out of the way. Then step on the upper path to lower it, allowing the energy to flow properly and power up the generator.

How to Choose the Correct Moon

With power restored, head back to the large circular platform in the main control hall and interact with the mechanism. You’ll be prompted to select a moon destination from a globe terminal. Only the Frost Moon is available — the system returns no coordinates for the Eternal Moon or the Iridescent Moon. Select Frost Moon to continue. The machine will reveal three distinct symbols — pay close attention to these, because you’ll need to recall them during the self-destruct sequence later.

Boss Fight and the Self-Destruct Sequence

Before you can leave, the base’s main defender triggers a boss encounter. Defeat the Main Control Hall Defender Core to proceed. Once it goes down, the facility initiates a self-destruct countdown.

Paimon will ask you to recall the three orbital coordinate symbols to shut down the system. Here is the correct answer order:

• Simplest-looking one: Select the second option.
• Super Complicated one: Select the third option.
• Same as the second: Select the third option again.

Paimon will make a mistake and the first attempt fails. Don’t panic — just repeat the same order a second time. On the repeat, the third symbol will appear as the only available option once Paimon remembers it. If you get confused, you can retry the input with no penalty.

Escaping on the Spaceship

With the self-destruct stopped for now, head to the navigation console and interact with it. Rotate the globe until Ungien’s Circle appears as a destination, then select it. Before things go according to plan, something unexpected happens and the ship crashes. You and Paimon escape in emergency evacuation pods and land separately on the Frost Moon surface.

When you come to, absorb the nearby Archaeolune Energy and fire it at the rubble blocking your path to clear a way out. This is your first step on the Frost Moon surface, which unlocks the One Small Step for Paimon achievement. Reunite with Paimon, then search the area for Eggie’s crash site.

How to Find Eggie in the Underground Ruins

Follow the quest marker to the pit on the surface where Eggie’s escape pod has crashed underground. Head down into the ruins to look for her. The underground area has three Ancient Moon Pearl Power Station puzzles standing between you and Eggie, each one leading into the next room.

How to Solve the Power Station Puzzles

Each puzzle follows the same basic logic: push an Ancient Moon Pearl — the glowing blue and yellow sphere — into the empty slot of the Power Station to activate it and unlock the next door. Here is what makes each room slightly different:

First Puzzle — Three Pedestals

You need to place energy balls onto three pedestals to power the machine and open the door. Two balls are nearby on the same floor. The third is on a lower floor below. Push that missing ball into the Pearl Launcher and activate it to shoot it up to the right level. Push it onto the open pedestal, then activate the machine to unlock the door.

Second Puzzle — Statis Module

A Statis Module is a machine that locks an item in place and moves it around. Look up and absorb the energy from the module itself to shut it off. This releases the ball it was holding. Defeat the enemies that spawn, then carry the ball to the pedestal to activate the power supply and open the next passage.

Third Puzzle — Power Supply Stations

There are two power supply points in the final room. The first is in the northern block — push the pearl into the empty compartment to the right of the Pioneer Statue. Jump down to the platform below and push the pearl toward the Transmitter. Activate both power supplies to rescue Eggie and trigger the next cutscene.

After Rescuing Eggie

Once Eggie is free, she reveals her name as Ning Ning and regains some of her memories. Head back to the entrance Terminal — the same one you used to load the underground map earlier. Interact with it and take the elevator to return to the surface. Before leaving, check the underground for a Luxurious chest and download the map data from the terminal to make the next section easier to navigate.

On the surface, head southwest to find and activate the other Energy Generation Stations. Use the central elevator to reach The Eye of Ibni-Belum and gather information for Eggie to process. After activating the Eye’s terminal, follow the quest marker outside and use the launcher to climb to the top of the structure.

Completing the Pioneers Quest

Use the launcher at the top of the structure to reach the highest point. Once you arrive, the Pioneers quest completes and you earn the Blue Moon achievement. The Frost Moon map opens fully and the second act of Moon Gazing — Visitors From the Stars — begins immediately.

• Always select Ungien’s Circle on the ship’s navigation globe. The other options don’t have coordinates in the system.
• Don’t rush past chests in the underground ruins — there’s a Luxurious chest near the entrance terminal that’s easy to walk past.
• If the Pearl Launcher doesn’t fire, reposition the ball directly in front of it and try again.
• If a power supply mechanism doesn’t respond to the Archaeolune energy, move further away and use your Elemental Skill again before trying.
