TL;DR
- The Grappling Hook is one of the most important tools in Enshrouded — craft it early.
- Recipe: 4x Metal Scraps, 7x String, 10x Shroud Spores — crafted at the Workbench.
- You need a Workbench first. That costs 3x String and 8x Wood Logs.
- Metal Scraps come from Scavenger enemies and looting abandoned camps.
- String is made from Plant Fiber — 3 Plant Fiber per 1 String, so you need 21 total.
- Shroud Spores drop from enemies inside Shroud zones.
- The first place you actually need it is Braelyn Bridge, north of the Cinder Vault.
- You need at least 40 Stamina to use the Grappling Hook on anchor points.
- An Improved Grappling Hook exists — unlocked later via the Carpenter NPC.
Why You Need the Grappling Hook in Enshrouded
If you are new to Enshrouded, the Grappling Hook is not optional. It is one of the two essential traversal tools in the game — the other being the Glider. Without it, large parts of the map are completely inaccessible. Certain roads are broken. Bridges are collapsed. Vaults are sealed behind vertical climbs you simply cannot make on foot.
The very first time the game forces your hand is at Braelyn Bridge, north of the Cinder Vault where you start. There is no way past it without a Grappling Hook. You will need to use it twice just to cross — once to pull up, once to swing across the gap to the other side. After that moment, it stays useful all the way through the game.
It also opens access to the Ancient Spire – Springlands, which reveals the surrounding map and massively expands your Flame Altar build radius. Getting the Grappling Hook done fast means the rest of early game progression unlocks much sooner.
This guide covers everything you need: the full recipe, where to get each material, step-by-step crafting instructions, how to use it correctly, and how to upgrade it later. Enshrouded Grappling Hook Recipe
The Grappling Hook is crafted at the Workbench. Here is the full recipe:
- 4x Metal Scraps
- 7x String
- 10x Shroud Spores
That is it. Three materials, all obtainable in the early game. None of them are locked behind NPCs or advanced crafting stations. You just need the Workbench placed at your base and the materials in your inventory.

Step 1 – Build a Workbench First
Before you can craft the Grappling Hook, you need a Workbench. If you have already placed one, skip ahead. If not, here is what you need:
- 3x String
- 8x Wood Logs
Wood Logs come from chopping trees with your Axe. String is crafted in your manual crafting menu from Plant Fiber — 3 Plant Fiber makes 1 String. Grab Plant Fiber from the large bushes scattered everywhere in the starting area. They are common and you will find more than enough quickly.
Once you have the materials, open your manual crafting menu and build the Workbench. Place it near your Flame Altar. With the Workbench down, open it and scroll to the Survival section to find the Grappling Hook recipe.
Step 2 – How to Get Metal Scraps for the Grappling Hook
Metal Scraps are the material new players struggle with most. You cannot mine them like ore. You have to find them in the world or farm them from enemies.
Kill Scavenger Enemies
The most reliable source of Metal Scraps is killing Scavenger enemies — humanoid bandits found in camps and settlements above the Shroud. Each Scavenger drops one to three Metal Scraps on death. Their camps also have Metal Scraps sitting on tables, benches, and in crates around the area.
Loot Abandoned Camps and Settlements
Every abandoned settlement in Embervale is a Metal Scrap treasure chest if you look carefully. Check on top of workbenches, inside ruins, in unlocked chests, and on the ground near metal objects. Destroy metal furniture — metal beds especially — they frequently drop one or two pieces.
Best Early Locations for Metal Scraps
- Inside the Cinder Vault — the starting vault where you wake up. Loot it before you leave.
- Scavenger Camp southwest of Braelyn Bridge — close to your starting area, packed with enemies and loose scraps.
- Longkeep and the surrounding ruins — one of the earliest settlements, consistently reliable for Metal Scraps.
- Around Braelyn Bridge itself — the area north of the Cinder Vault has multiple camps and enemies worth clearing.
Good news: enemy camps and their loot reset roughly every 24 hours of in-game time. If you clear a camp and come back later, enemies and their drops respawn. This means you can reliably farm the same locations whenever you run low.

Step 3 – How to Get String for the Grappling Hook
String is the easiest material to gather. You need 7x String for the Grappling Hook recipe. Since it takes 3 Plant Fiber to craft 1 String, you will need 21 Plant Fiber in total.
Plant Fiber drops from the large bushes and shrub plants found all over the starting area. Just run through the area near your base collecting from every bush you pass. You will have 21 Plant Fiber in minutes. Open your manual crafting menu and craft the 7 Strings before you head to the Workbench.
String is also used in several other early recipes — including the Workbench itself — so it is always worth keeping a stock of it in your base storage.
Step 4 – How to Get Shroud Spores for the Grappling Hook
Shroud Spores require you to actually enter the Shroud. That is the blue fog covering parts of the map. You need 10x Shroud Spores for the recipe.
Where to Find Shroud Spores
Shroud Spores drop from enemies inside Shroud zones. These are the cursed and corrupted creatures that patrol the fog-covered areas. They are tougher than regular enemies outside the Shroud, but at this stage of the game they are manageable with basic gear.
You can also occasionally find Shroud Spores on patches of glowing plant life inside the Shroud — not common, but worth grabbing if you see them.
The easiest early Shroud zone to farm them is the Enshrouded valley north of the Cinder Vault. Head north from your starting base, enter the Shroud zone there, kill the enemies you find, and collect their drops. Watch your Shroud timer — do not linger. Get in, kill a few enemies, collect the Spores, and get out before the timer runs low.
Tips for Surviving the Shroud
- Go in with a weapon in hand and healing items ready.
- Keep an eye on the timer above your health bar at all times.
- Shimmering lights inside the Shroud float toward exits — follow them if you need out fast.
- Stronger your Flame Level, the more time you have inside. Prioritize strengthening it as you progress.
Step 5 – Craft the Grappling Hook at the Workbench
Once you have all three materials in your inventory, walk up to your Workbench and interact with it. Scroll to the Survival section of the crafting menu and find the Grappling Hook. Select it and craft. The Grappling Hook will be added to your inventory.
That is the full process. Now you need to equip it before you can use it.
How to Equip the Grappling Hook in Enshrouded
This trips up more players than you would expect. Crafting it is not enough — you have to actively equip it to your character or it just sits in your backpack doing nothing.
Here is how to equip it on PC:
- Press N to open the Character screen, or open your inventory and right-click the Grappling Hook.
- Select Equip from the menu.
- The Grappling Hook will now appear in your equipped tools slot.
On PS5, navigate to the Character screen through the menu and equip it from there. Once it is equipped, you are ready to use it in the world.
How to Use the Grappling Hook in Enshrouded
Enshrouded’s Grappling Hook does not work like the ones in games such as Zelda or Dying Light where you can fling it at any surface. It only works on specific anchor points placed throughout the world.
Finding Grapple Anchor Points
Grapple points look like metal rungs or hooks that stick out from structures. When you are close enough and facing one, they will flash orange to signal they are usable. An interaction prompt — pressing E on PC or the interact button on controller — will appear when you are in range.
There are two types of anchor points:
- Pull Anchor — pulls you directly toward the anchor point. Useful for climbing quickly to a ledge or rooftop.
- Swing Anchor — allows you to swing across a gap rather than being pulled straight to it. Used on bridges and chasms.
At Braelyn Bridge, you will use both types. The first anchor pulls you up. The second lets you swing across the broken section. You need to use them in sequence.
Stamina Requirement
You need at least 40 Stamina to activate the Grappling Hook. If your Stamina bar is too low when you approach an anchor point, the prompt will not respond. This catches players off guard when they sprint to the bridge and immediately try to grapple. Slow down before the anchor, let your Stamina recover to above 40, then activate it.
Adding Grapple Anchors to Your Own Base
Once you rescue and bring back the Blacksmith NPC, you can craft your own Grappling Hook anchors to place in your base. Both Pull Anchors and Swing Anchors are available from the Blacksmith’s crafting menu. This lets you build vertical access points into your own builds — very useful for tall base designs.
How to Get the Improved Grappling Hook
Later in the game you can upgrade to the Improved Grappling Hook, which is strictly better than the base version in two ways:
- Uses only 30 Stamina instead of 40 — lets you use it more freely without needing to wait for stamina recovery.
- Has a longer activation range — you can trigger it from further away, making traversal smoother.
How to Unlock the Improved Grappling Hook Recipe
You need to rescue and bring back the Carpenter NPC to your base. Then find and defeat the Scavenger Gorger Matron boss. This enemy is located at the top of a Scavenger base in the world. Defeating it automatically rewards you with the Improved Grappling Hook recipe.
Improved Grappling Hook Crafting Recipe
Take the recipe to the Carpenter at your base and craft it there. You will need:
- 1x Grappling Hook (your existing one)
- Additional materials sourced from the Carpenter’s crafting station
The Carpenter and the Alchemist NPC both need to be at your base before the Improved Grappling Hook becomes craftable. Rescue them through their respective vault quests and house them at your base first.
Grappling Hook Tips and Tricks
- Always check your Stamina before approaching an anchor point. Running in with low Stamina means you cannot activate it and will likely fall into a gap.
- The Grappling Hook can be used as a combat tool in later updates — Keen Games added the ability to use it offensively to pull yourself toward airborne enemies or reposition mid-fight.
- Combine it with the Glider for the fastest traversal in the game. Grapple up to height, then deploy the Glider and soar across the landscape. This combination makes getting around Embervale genuinely fast and fun.
- Grapple points are found inside dungeons and vaults too — not just outdoors. Keep an eye out inside ruins for orange-flashing rungs. They often lead to hidden loot rooms or shortcuts.
- Do not lose your Grappling Hook on death. If you die in a Shroud zone, your loot bag sits where you died. Make sure you recover it — you cannot re-enter certain vaults without it until you craft another one.
- Craft a spare. Keeping a backup Grappling Hook in your base storage is smart. The materials are not expensive once you know where to farm them, and having a spare saves a lot of panic if something goes wrong.
Enshrouded Grappling Hook – FAQ
