What Is the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero

The Feather Bow is a Ranged-type Phantom Edge in Phantom Blade Zero. It’s your first bow in the game, and it doubles as both a combat tool and an exploration ability. In a fight, it fires a charged arrow that hits harder against enemies who are still at full health. Outside of combat, it lets you shoot down hanging objects — pouches, bundles, containers dangling from trees and ropes — to loot whatever’s inside.

At base level it has 309 Damage and 208 Guard Break. It’s not a guard breaker like the Dread Axe, but as a ranged option it fills a completely different role — pressure from distance, opener damage, and map exploration.

For the full list of every Phantom Edge in the game, see our Phantom Blade Zero All Phantom Edges List.

WARNING: The Feather Bow Is Missable

This is the only Phantom Edge in Phantom Blade Zero you can permanently miss. The Purge the Sect quest — which rewards the Feather Bow — fails automatically if you defeat the main boss of Crimson Forest before completing it. After that point, the bow is gone for that playthrough.

Do this quest during your time in Weeping Creek Valley. Don’t wait. Everything else in the game can be picked up in its own time, but not the Feather Bow.

How to Get the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero

You get the Feather Bow by completing the Purge the Sect side quest in Weeping Creek Valley. The quest involves talking to an NPC, clearing an enemy camp, collecting a broken bow, and returning it to be repaired. Here’s the full step-by-step.

Step 1 – Talk to the Brooding Old Archer

Head to the Mandate Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. Look for a man sitting or standing on top of a building near the outpost area. This is the Brooding Old Archer. Talk to him to start the Purge the Sect quest. He’ll ask you to clear out the enemies at the Ruthless Archer Camp to the northwest.

Step 2 – Clear the Ruthless Archer Camp

Make your way to the Ruthless Archer Camp on the northwest side of the Weeping Creek Valley map. It’s near the Ruthless Archer Camp Bell. Defeat the archers in the area. The enemies here aren’t especially tough at this stage, but they can hit hard with ranged attacks, so close the distance quickly.

    Step 3 – Find the Broken-String Bow

After clearing the camp, look for a chest near the Ruthless Archer Camp Bell. Inside is the Broken-String Bow. Pick it up — this is what you’ll bring back to the old archer to get repaired. You may also find it by looting the area after defeating the camp enemies.

Step 4 – Return to the Brooding Old Archer

Go back to the Brooding Old Archer at the outpost. Hand over the Broken-String Bow. He repairs and restrings it, then gives it back to you as the Feather Bow. That’s your reward — a fully functioning Ranged Phantom Edge, ready to use.

Right near where the archer stands, you’ll likely spot a red bow icon in a tree. That’s a hanging object marker. Now that you have the Feather Bow, you can shoot it down immediately and loot what’s inside.

Feather Bow Ranged Shot – The Exploration Ability

Like the Dread Axe’s Iron Chain Breaker, the Feather Bow has a passive field ability called Ranged Shot. Once you own the bow, you can shoot down hanging objects scattered across the world — even when the Feather Bow isn’t one of your two equipped Phantom Edges.

When you approach an area with a shootable object, the map marks it. Once you own the Feather Bow, those markers turn green and read “Can Use.” The objects are usually cloth pouches, bundles, or containers hanging from tree branches or high ropes. Shooting them drops whatever loot is inside directly to the ground.

It’s worth going back through early areas once you have the bow. Some spots have upgrade materials or items that were hanging just out of reach before.

All Feather Bow Skills in Phantom Blade Zero

The Feather Bow gains new abilities as you raise its upgrade level. Here’s every skill unlocked through leveling and Soul Tempering:

    • Active Ability (Level 1): Hold R2 to charge the shot, release to fire an arrow. Deals increased damage against enemies at full HP. Consumes 1 Remnant Spark.
    • Ranged Shot (On Pickup): Once obtained, the Feather Bow can shoot down certain hanging objects at medium to long range, even when not equipped.
    • Willow Step · Side (Level 5): After dodging to the side, press the Phantom Edge button to fire an arrow while moving sideways. Good for keeping distance while attacking.
    • Hundred-Pace Pierce Lv. 1 (Level 10): Slightly increases damage dealt when enemies haven’t detected you yet. Rewards careful, patient play.
    • Willow Step · Forward (Level 15): After dashing forward, press the Phantom Edge button to fire while moving. Lets you close in and shoot in one fluid motion.
    • Hundred-Pace Pierce Lv. 2 (Level 20): A stronger version of the stealth damage bonus at level 10. Damage increases further when undetected.
    • Hundred-Pace Pierce Lv. 3 (Level 30): Greatly increases damage when undetected. At this level, an opening shot against a boss or elite enemy can take a real chunk of their health.
    • Precision Shot (Soul Temper): While charging the bow, Soul’s hand briefly glows. Release R2 with precise timing as it glows to deal increased damage and drain more Sha-Chi on that shot.

How to Soul Temper the Feather Bow

The Feather Bow’s Soul Temper material is the Reinforced Bowstring. You can find this item through exploration in the later parts of Weeping Creek Valley. One confirmed method involves finding it after unlocking the Flaming Mane Phantom Edge — that opens up the area where the Reinforced Bowstring is located.

Once you have the Reinforced Bowstring, use the Soul Temper system — available after meeting Myst in Pangzhen — to upgrade the Feather Bow and unlock Precision Shot. This changes how you use the bow in combat. Instead of just holding and releasing R2, you now watch for the glow on Soul’s hand and time your release at that exact moment. A well-timed Precision Shot deals noticeably more damage and drains the enemy’s Sha-Chi harder — useful for pressuring bosses from range without burning Spark Charges recklessly.

How to Use the Feather Bow in Phantom Blade Zero – Combat Tips

Feather Bow Deals Bonus Damage at Full HP

The Feather Bow’s base ability hits harder when an enemy is at full health. This makes it an ideal opener. Before you engage in melee, fire a charged shot first. Against bosses especially, a well-charged opening arrow deals real damage and starts Sha-Chi drain before you even close the gap. Don’t save it for mid-fight — use it at the start of every major encounter.

Use Willow Step to Stay Safe While Shooting

Once you hit Level 5 and unlock Willow Step · Side, you can dodge and shoot in one move. This is the main improvement to how the bow feels in actual fights. Before Willow Step, firing the bow means standing still and committing. After it, you’re moving sideways or forward while releasing an arrow. Much harder for enemies to punish you during the animation.

    Stack Hundred-Pace Pierce With Stealth

The Hundred-Pace Pierce upgrades reward opening enemies from stealth. If you’re approaching a tough elite or optional boss that hasn’t spotted you yet, start with a Precision Shot timed correctly for the glow — the combined damage from stealth bonus and Precision Shot timing stacks up fast. It’s not always possible, but when it is, a single bow shot can take a big bite out of a tough enemy before the fight even properly begins.

The Feather Bow Is Low Guard Break — Pair It Accordingly

With 208 Guard Break, the Feather Bow won’t crack shields quickly. Don’t rely on it against shielded enemies. Instead, pair it with the Dread Axe for those — the axe handles guard breaking, while the bow handles ranged pressure and full-HP openers. Together they cover each other’s weaknesses cleanly.

Use It to Loot Hanging Objects Without Equipping It

This is easy to forget once you’re deep into the game. The Ranged Shot field ability works passively. You don’t need the Feather Bow in one of your two Phantom Edge slots. Whenever you see a green hanging-object marker on the map, just walk up and interact — the game handles the rest automatically. Free up your slots for combat-focused Phantom Edges and let the bow work in the background.

Feather Bow vs Other Ranged Phantom Edges

The Feather Bow is your first bow, but it won’t be your last. Later in the game you’ll find the One-Eyed Bow, which also has a bonus for enemies at full HP — but it requires you to be at full HP yourself to trigger it. The Feather Bow has no such restriction. It applies the damage bonus as long as the enemy is at full health, regardless of your own HP.

For most of the early and mid-game, the Feather Bow is the better pick. Keep the One-Eyed Bow in mind for specific boss strategies later, but don’t feel pressure to swap the Feather Bow out early.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Feather Bow

Can You Miss the Feather Bow Permanently?

Yes. The Purge the Sect quest fails if you beat the main boss of Crimson Forest first. After that, the Feather Bow is gone for that save file. Get it during Chapter 2 in Weeping Creek Valley — don’t leave it until you’re already in Crimson Forest.

Do You Need the Feather Bow Equipped to Shoot Hanging Objects?

No. The Ranged Shot field ability is passive. As long as you own the bow, hanging-object markers on the map will turn green and be interactive. You can run two other Phantom Edges in your slots and still trigger this ability when exploring.

What Upgrade Materials Does the Feather Bow Use?

The Feather Bow uses Ranged-type Phantom Edge upgrade materials. These are separate from Destructive or Martial Edge materials, so upgrading it doesn’t compete with weapons like the Dread Axe or Hunter’s Chain Sickle. Early materials can be bought from the Peddler for around 1,040 Remnant Dust each.

Is the Feather Bow Good for Boss Fights?

It’s good as an opener and for applying pressure during specific windows. It won’t carry a boss fight on its own — you’ll spend most of your time in melee. But a well-timed Precision Shot on a boss that hasn’t entered their second phase yet, or an opening arrow before the fight starts, adds up over the course of a long encounter. Use it strategically rather than as your main damage source.

The Feather Bow is easy to overlook, but it’s the only thing in Phantom Blade Zero you can actually lose forever. Get it early, upgrade it steadily, and Soul Temper it once you find the Reinforced Bowstring. As a passive exploration tool alone it’s worth having — any loot hanging in a tree becomes yours the moment you own it, no extra slot needed.
