GTA 6 delay speculation is back — and this time it’s coming from someone who’s actually been inside Rockstar. Former GTA 5 animator Mike York has gone on record saying he “would not be shocked at all” if Rockstar Games pushes GTA 6 back yet again, potentially as much as six more months. Before anyone spirals, York was upfront that he has zero insider access to the current project — but his read on how Rockstar operates as a studio is worth paying attention to, and it’s sparked a serious conversation across the community about how locked in that November 19 date really is.
What Mike York Actually Said
Speaking to Indy100 through Covers, York — who worked as an animator at Rockstar between 2012 and 2017 and was part of the team that shipped Grand Theft Auto V — made it clear upfront that he can’t speak with any real certainty about GTA 6’s current development state. He’s been out of the building for years and has no active contacts feeding him information. That disclaimer is important context for everything that follows.
With that out of the way, he didn’t hold back. “Personally, after being there and working on GTA 5, I don’t currently work there so I can’t give a confidence based on that, but based on my previous experience, they could delay it again,” he said. He went further, suggesting a specific window: “They’ll push it six more months if they have to. I would not be shocked at all.”
His reasoning wasn’t about pessimism — it was about understanding how Rockstar’s internal culture works. According to York, quality is the only metric that ultimately matters at that studio. If the final mission still has bugs, or if key sections don’t hit the standard Rockstar holds itself to when November approaches, delaying is simply what the studio does. “It doesn’t matter. If they need to do what they need to do, they’ll do it,” he said. “I don’t think it would hurt them or anything.”
And honestly? He’s not wrong that Rockstar has the leverage to get away with it. GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated game of all time. The audience isn’t going anywhere regardless of when it launches.
GTA 6’s Full Delay History — This Would Be the Third
If another delay happens, it wouldn’t be without precedent — it would actually be the third time Rockstar has pushed the date back. Here’s the full timeline so far:
- Original target: Fall 2025 — confirmed in the first GTA 6 trailer in December 2023
- First delay: Pushed to May 26, 2026, announced in May 2024, with Rockstar citing the need for additional development time
- Second delay: Pushed to November 19, 2026, announced in November 2025, again citing quality as the reason
- Current date: November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The pattern is notable. Both previous delays were almost exactly six months — a cadence that lines up precisely with what York is describing as a possible third slip, which would land GTA 6 somewhere around May or June 2027. That’s not a prediction, but the symmetry is hard to ignore.
York also pointed out that this is consistent with how Rockstar has historically handled its biggest releases. Grand Theft Auto V was originally targeting Spring 2013 and shipped in September 2013. Red Dead Redemption 2 was initially aimed at late 2017 before landing in October 2018. Rockstar has never appeared particularly bothered about holding firm to announced dates when more polish is needed — and the community generally forgives it because the finished products tend to be worth the wait.
What Take-Two and Rockstar Are Actually Saying
Here’s the counterpoint that matters: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has reaffirmed November 19 multiple times, and his most recent comments have been among his most emphatic. Speaking at an industry event in April 2026, Zelnick told attendees he expected “a lot of people will be calling in sick” on November 19 — hardly the tone of an executive preparing to issue another delay notice. More recently he stated flatly, “November 19, 2026. I do know. It’s been announced.”
The financial stakes here are enormous. Take-Two reported $6.72 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2026 and is projecting $8 to $8.2 billion for fiscal year 2027 — a roughly 20% jump that is almost entirely contingent on GTA 6 shipping on schedule. Missing November would almost certainly force a revision of those projections and create serious investor turbulence for the company. That’s a real financial disincentive against delay that didn’t exist to the same degree with the first two pushbacks.
There’s also the fact that marketing has now fully kicked off. GTA 6 pre-orders are live at $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition. The Netflix exclusive Extended Look drops August 27 at 3 PM ET — six hours before it goes free on Rockstar’s YouTube channel — and is expected to be the most substantial look at the game yet. You don’t greenlight a Netflix partnership and open pre-orders if the development situation is anywhere close to critical.
Reports have also indicated that GTA 6 became content complete relatively recently, meaning the game is now in the final testing, QA, and polish phase rather than active content production. That’s consistent with a November launch window, not a project that’s in trouble.
Is Another GTA 6 Delay Actually Likely?
If you’re going purely by the available evidence, the answer is probably no — but “probably no” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The honest read of the situation is that GTA 6 appears to be on track based on everything publicly visible, and Take-Two has strong financial and reputational reasons to keep it there. The GTA VI Extended Look on Netflix on August 27 is the next real signal — if that footage looks polished and shows a game that’s ready, it’ll do a lot to quiet the delay speculation.
York’s comments aren’t a leak or an inside tip. They’re an educated guess from someone who understands Rockstar’s culture — and that culture does prioritize quality to a degree that most studios don’t. But culture alone doesn’t delay a game when $8 billion in projected revenue, an active marketing campaign, open pre-orders, and a Netflix deal are all already in motion.
The more interesting version of York’s point is the threshold question: how bad would the QA situation have to get for Rockstar to pull the trigger despite all of that? In 2024 and 2025, the answer was apparently “bad enough to delay twice.” Right now, there’s no signal that things are anywhere near that point.
November 19 remains the date. Nothing that York said changes that. But if you’re someone who’s been holding off on buying into the hype until the disc is actually in your hands, his comments are a reasonable reminder that Rockstar has surprised people before.
