How Cosmetics Work in Gears of War E-Day

Gears of War E-Day took a clear stance on cosmetics: no battle pass, no tour of duty, and no gimmick progression track. The Coalition described it as an old-school approach to unlocks. You earn Coins by playing matches, leveling up, and completing medals, then spend those Coins on exactly what you want from the Barracks.

Nearly every cosmetic in the game can be earned without spending real money. The only exceptions are the Premium Edition exclusives and a small number of charity or partner items. Everything else — character skins, weapon skin sets, poses, banners, emblems, icons, and titles — is available through gameplay or Coin purchases.

Coins are the free-to-earn currency. You get them from match performance at the end of every Versus and Horde Siege session, from every ten Player Levels, and from completing medals. Spend them in the Barracks on any item you want.

Iron is the premium currency purchased with real money. It buys the same Barracks items, just instantly without the grind. Featured weekly store items carry an Iron discount. Items that expire from limited-time challenges re-enter the Barracks after a cooldown, so nothing is permanently locked out.

All skins are equipped through the Barracks menu. You access it from the multiplayer lobby screen. A skin is fully unlocked when it appears in the character’s list with no lock icon or progress bar showing.

All Cosmetic Types in Gears of War E-Day

There are seven types of cosmetics in E-Day:

    • Character Skins — Alternate outfits and looks for playable characters in Versus and Horde Siege.
    • Weapon Skins — Visual reskins for weapons. Unlock as a full set, so one unlock applies across all weapons in the armory at once.
    • Poses — Stances your character performs during lobby intros and outros. These are not in-match emotes. You cannot trigger them during gameplay.
    • Banners — Profile display cards shown during intros and outros. In Horde Siege, Banners also appear on the map when your squad completes an objective.
    • Emblems — Small icons displayed on your profile and scoreboard. Up to three medals can be displayed alongside your emblem.
    • Icons — Profile picture icons shown in the lobby and scoreboard.
    • Titles — Text labels displayed next to your name in multiplayer lobbies.

All Character Skins in Gears of War E-Day

    How to Earn Coins Fast

Coins are the main currency for free cosmetics. Here are the fastest ways to build your balance:

    • Play Horde Siege — Coins are awarded based on match performance and score at the end of every session. Longer missions with more objectives give you more.
    • Complete weekly challenges — There are 12 weekly challenges (6 in Horde Siege, 6 in Versus). They reset each week and reward Player XP that feeds into level milestone Coins.
    • Level milestones — Every 10 Player Levels, you receive a batch of Coins automatically.
    • Complete medals — The medal system has 80+ series at launch. Finishing medal tiers rewards Coins, banners, and emblems.
    • Seasonal challenges — There are 20 per season across both modes. Poses, weapon skin sets, banners, and emblems are among the rewards.

To see how the Horde Siege class system works and how to level each class to 30, check our Gears of War E-Day all tactical gear list — class progression is tied to gear unlocks as well as Coin-earning opportunities.

How to Equip Skins in Gears of War E-Day

All skins are equipped from the Barracks. Open the Barracks from the main multiplayer screen to access character skins, weapon skins, poses, banners, emblems, icons, and titles. Each section shows what you currently own and what is still locked.

For character skins, select the character you want to customize and choose from the skins you have unlocked. The skin carries across both Horde Siege and Versus.

For weapon skins, go to the Armory. Equip a skin there and it applies to all weapons in the set at once — there is no per-weapon selection.

A challenge-based skin shows a running counter under its lock icon — for example, “0/15 extractions” for the Colonel Trench skin. You can track progress from the Barracks without needing to check another menu.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gears of War E-Day have a battle pass?

No. E-Day has no battle pass, no tour of duty system, and no premium progression track. The Coalition specifically designed the cosmetic system around the phrase “no battle pass, no bullshit.” Almost everything in the game can be earned by playing. The only paid-only items are a small number of Premium Edition exclusives and a few charity and partner cosmetics.

How do you unlock skins in Gears of War E-Day for free?

Free skins come from completing campaign acts, finishing the Horde Siege onboarding mission, reaching Horde Siege class milestones, completing specific Versus and Horde challenges, and Re-upping your Player Level. The Barracks also lets you buy any cosmetic using Coins you earn by playing matches.

What are Coins in Gears of War E-Day?

Coins are the free-to-earn currency. You get them from match performance scores at the end of Versus and Horde Siege sessions, from every 10 Player Levels, and from completing medals and challenges. Spend them directly in the Barracks on the exact cosmetic you want, with no random chance or loot boxes.

What is Iron in Gears of War E-Day?

Iron is the optional premium currency bought with real money. It buys the same Barracks items as Coins — just instantly without the grind. Weekly featured items at the store carry an Iron discount. You never have to spend Iron to get any earnable skin.

Do weapon skins apply to all weapons or just one?

Weapon skins unlock as a full set. When you earn or buy any weapon skin, it automatically applies to all weapons in the armory. You do not need to unlock the same skin separately for each weapon.

How many character skins are in Gears of War E-Day at launch?

There are over 60 character skins at launch, covering both COG and Locust characters. The Coalition confirmed that every main campaign character is unlockable from day one, and post-launch seasons will continue adding new characters and skins.

How do you get the Commander Zee skin?

The Commander Zee skin unlocks by completing all Acts of the Gears of War E-Day campaign on any difficulty. It is the reward for finishing the full story and is tied to a character reveal at the end of the game.

What is the hardest skin to unlock in Gears of War E-Day?

The Siege Ops Dom skin requires you to reach max level (Level 30) with all four Horde Siege classes — Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic. Since each class levels up independently and goes to 30 separately, this is the biggest time commitment of any earnable skin. The Wings of Valor Marcus skin, earned by completing all four Re-ups to reach the maximum level, is the other major long-term unlock.
