TL;DR

  • Halo Campaign Evolved has 13 missions total — 10 main campaign missions and 3 bonus prequel missions.
  • The 10 main missions are the same story as the original Halo: Combat Evolved, fully rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5.
  • The 3 bonus missions are brand new — called Operation: METEORITE — and are set one year before the main campaign.
  • Each mission contains 3 Skulls and 1 Terminal to find.
  • The bonus missions are best played after the main campaign, but can be accessed any time.

How Many Missions Are in Halo Campaign Evolved?

Halo Campaign Evolved has 13 missions in total. Ten of them make up the classic campaign — the same story from the original 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved, now fully remade with Unreal Engine 5 visuals, updated cinematics, and re-recorded voice acting.

The other three are brand-new prequel missions called Operation: METEORITE. These are played separately from the main campaign and follow Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson one year before the events of the main story.

The main missions alone will take around 10 hours to complete. The new bonus missions push that number a bit higher, and collectible hunters can expect significantly more playtime chasing every Skull and Terminal.

All Main Campaign Missions in Order

The core of Halo Campaign Evolved is the complete, rebuilt version of the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign. After crash-landing on the ringworld Halo, Master Chief and Cortana battle Covenant forces to uncover a dark secret threatening all life in the galaxy. All original missions are present, with enhanced cinematics featuring new motion-capture animations and freshly recorded dialogue from returning cast members.

Each mission has 3 Skulls and 1 Terminal to collect.

Mission 1 — The Pillar of Autumn

The opening mission. The UNSC warship Pillar of Autumn comes under Covenant attack and Master Chief is woken from cryo-sleep. Your job is to get off the ship alive. It sets the tone for everything that follows.

  • Skulls: Speed Limit, Magnified, Perspective
  • Terminal: Approach

Mission 2 — Halo

Master Chief crash-lands on the ring-shaped structure called Halo. This is your first real look at the ringworld and where you start piecing together where you are and what Halo actually is.

  • Skulls: Grunt Funeral, Give & Take, Floor is Lava
  • Terminal: Forgotten

Mission 3 — The Truth and Reconciliation

A Covenant cruiser is holding Captain Keyes prisoner. Master Chief leads a night assault to board the ship and break him out. One of the most intense missions in the original game — and the remake makes it hit even harder.

  • Skulls: Iron, Endurance Spec, Foreign
  • Terminal: Inquisitor

Mission 4 — The Silent Cartographer

A beach assault on an island that holds a map room — the Silent Cartographer — which points to Halo’s control room. This mission is famous for its open feel and is a fan favourite from the original.

  • Skulls: Bandana, Acrophobia, Hip Fire
  • Terminal: Status Update

Mission 5 — Assault on the Control Room

Master Chief pushes deep into Halo to reach the installation’s control room. A large, sprawling mission with big vehicle sections across snowy terrain and some of the best combat encounters in the game.

  • Skulls: IWHBYD, Angry, Cowbell
  • Terminal: Tangent I

Mission 6 — 343 Guilty Spark

Things take a dark turn. Master Chief is sent to retrieve the Index — a key to activating Halo — and discovers something far worse than the Covenant waiting in the swamps. The Flood makes its entrance here.

  • Skulls: Fog, That’s Just… Wrong, They Come Back
  • Terminal: Tangent II

Mission 7 — The Library

Widely considered the most difficult mission in the original game. Master Chief must fight through wave after wave of Flood enemies across a massive Forerunner structure to retrieve the Index. Relentless from start to finish.

  • Skulls: Tilt, Pop, Famine
  • Terminal: Tangent III

Mission 8 — Two Betrayals

Master Chief learns the full truth about what Halo is and what activating it would actually do. He must now destroy the ring’s power sources to stop 343 Guilty Spark from firing the weapon. A mission full of reversals and big moments.

  • Skulls: Tough Luck, Black Eye, Mythic
  • Terminal: Alone

Mission 9 — Keyes

Master Chief goes back to the Truth and Reconciliation to rescue Captain Keyes — only to find the Flood have taken over the ship. A tense and disturbing mission with a grim outcome.

  • Skulls: Catch, Blind, Pinata
  • Terminal: Consumed

Mission 10 — The Maw

The final mission. Master Chief returns to the Pillar of Autumn with one goal — destroy the ship to stop Halo from firing. It ends with the iconic Warthog escape run, one of the most memorable finales in gaming history.

  • Skulls: Stowed Reload, Boom, Thunderstorm
  • Terminal: Arrival

All Operation: METEORITE Bonus Missions

The three bonus missions are set before the events of the main game and are completely original. They feature Master Chief teaming up with Sergeant Major Johnson as they deal with the Covenant.

The bonus missions follow Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson in their assault on a Covenant vessel. There are only three of them, and they are played separately from the main campaign.

The recommended order is to play these after finishing the main campaign, though you can access them at any time from the mission select screen.

Bonus Mission 1 — Boarding Action

The first Operation: METEORITE mission. Master Chief and Johnson board a Covenant vessel in the opening act of the prequel story. A new environment with new enemy encounters not found in the main campaign.

  • Skulls: Malfunction, Johnny Ammo Seed, Leadhead
  • Terminal: The Path

Bonus Mission 2 — The Most Dangerous Game

The second prequel mission pushes deeper into the Covenant ship. The stakes rise as Master Chief and Johnson fight further into hostile territory in search of crucial intelligence.

  • Skulls: Temperamental, Recession, Ghost
  • Terminal: Penitent Report

Bonus Mission 3 — Heavy Burden

The final Operation: METEORITE mission and the conclusion of the prequel story. Operation: METEORITE is set one year before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved and follows the Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson as they infiltrate a Covenant agricultural ship holding orbit over the glassed human colony of Promise, in search of data that could lead to the Covenant’s fabled homeworld of High Charity.

  • Skulls: Eye Patch, Grunt Birthday Party, Efficient
  • Terminal: Harmonious Clarity

Skulls and Terminals — What Are They?

Every mission in Halo Campaign Evolved contains 3 Skulls and 1 Terminal to find. That is 39 hidden Skulls and 13 Terminals across all 13 missions.

Skulls are collectibles that modify gameplay conditions. Effects range from debilitating player abilities to adding absurd modifiers, such as a weapon randomizer or the Grunt Birthday Party Skull, which triggers an explosion of confetti on headshots.

Terminals resemble small computer stations with a red light and produce an audible sound when Master Chief gets close. There is one Terminal in each mission, and collecting all 13 unlocks the Lore Have Mercy Trophy.

Three additional Skulls — Adaptation, Reload, and Armistice — unlock automatically once you have picked up any two Skulls. That is also the same moment Campaign Remix unlocks, which lets you randomize weapon behaviour, enemy placements, player stats, and environmental effects for a fresh run.

You can return to any mission via Mission Select to grab collectibles you missed. You do not need to replay the whole game.

What Order Should You Play the Missions In?

The 10 main campaign missions should be played in order from Mission 1 to Mission 10. The story is sequential and the missions unlock one by one as you progress.

For the Operation: METEORITE bonus missions, most players recommend finishing the main campaign first. The prequel story makes more sense once you know how the original Halo: Combat Evolved plays out. That said, the game lets you access them at any point from the mission select screen.
